Was having a bit of a discussion over the weekend with a few friends about our top 5 current actors, by current I mean it's based on fairly recent performances (last 10 years).

In no particular order I named the following

Edward Norton
Benicio Del Torro
Russell Crowe
Leonardo Di Caprio
Christian Bale

James Gandolfini was close to making the list, but I just feel like there are a couple of glaring omissions from the list.

Which 5 actors would you say you looked out for in films?

Martin Sheen
James Gandolfini (can't believe you'd leave him out and put Di Caprio in JG!)
Edward Norton
Morgan Freeman
Ben Kingsley

Russell Crowe
Leonardo Di Caprio
Christian Bale

Cannot argue with any of them. Leo probably the best right now IMO.

Also I never thought I would say it but Casey Affleck was seriously good in Gone Baby Gone and Assassination of Jesse James.

Clearly he did not follow after his brother as far as acting skills are concerned.

I know what you mean, I never thought i'd rate him but i've seen a few more films of his of late that have swayed my descision. I think over the next few years he'll really push on, especially if the Roosevelt film directed by Scorsese does well. Shutter Island looks promising too.

I know what you mean, but for the Tony Soprano role alone Gandolfini is a shoe in for a list like this, he was absolutely fantastic and consistently so.

Funnily enough i've never watched sopranos - I just like him in the movies i've seen him in. Did you see In The Loop? I thought he was great in that. maybe if he had more big films under his belt he's be in the top 5, but i'd struggle to take anybody out!

Shit a brick JGray, did you really just tell me you've never watched Sopranos?!

Stop watching films and get it watched you mad man!

I'd have Sean Penn and Brad Pitt on those lists.

Is this based on ability?

I look out for Gerard Butler.

But for quality, I'd go for:

Johnny Depp
Ray Winstone
Tommy Lee Jones
Gabriel Byrne

And I know I've forgotten someone important.

Agree with you on Washington, can't stand that guy.

Disagree entirely on Freeman, he's had a few guff roles but I think he's great. Its all subjective though eh.

Well, I can put up with Freeman, but just because he's been in a lot of films doesn't make him a great actor. His character is the wise old man or boss, which he's done to death all by himself.

I can see where you're coming from with that view, and I accept your opinion, but I still like him :)

Javier Bardem is better than most of the people mentioned in this thread

as for my favorite?

Bardem
Depp
Malkovich
Del Torro
Mark Strong

Honorable mentions to Clooney & Will Smith who I like and think are underrated as serious actors

...and Bruce Willis

Will smith sucks hth

Here's my sixth penneth...

Daniel Day Lewis
Kevin Spacey (when he's in the mood)
Russell Crowe (^^)
Sean Penn
Edward Norton

...many others.

Meryl Streep is considered an actress I believe ;)

Some others:

Rutger Hauer
Christopher Walken
Christopher Lee
Robert De Niro
Dustin Hoffman
Jeremy Irons

Certain actors for their performances in certain films:
Guy Pearce (in Memento )
Javier Bardem (in No Country for Old Men)
Harrison Ford (in Witness, Blade Runner)

Depp
Di Caprio
Norton

Morgan fecking Freeman
Ray Winstone
Gerard Butler
Denzel 'I play the same person in every film' Washington

Di Caprio I don't think gets some of the credit he deserves, he was in some rubbish films early on in his career but of late he's really come of age so to speak, like I said above the two scorsese films he's in will really bring him on.

Norton, well he's maybe scraping in on some of his older work with American History X & Fight club being the two that spring to mind - but he was decent too in the illusionist.

Javier Bardem was fantastic in No Country for old men but i've not seen him in much else to be fair.

One great shout was Tony Leung, Takeshi Kaneshiro too would be up there - he's been pretty good in everything i've seen him in.

Is this thread not about who is the best right now as in the last couple of years?

If this is the case the likes of De Niro, Hoffman and Walken cannot be included surely?

Yeah thats the idea, more of a current top 5 rather than all time. If it was all time then Pacino & De Niro would be on my list - but seeing as a lot of what they do now can be classed at garbage they'd be nowhere near a current list for me.

I dont see why you cant include DDL jgrahm

He was also in the gangs of nyc which i thought was very good as well was he

To be fair the only film i can remember him being in during the last 10 years or so is There Will be Blood, most of his other stuff from memory is a bit older?

He's a good actor, but not somebody I've seen a lot of in recent years.

That’s what makes him so great, very selective about what roles he chooses. Unlike Robert "Rocky and Bull Winkle" De Niro, who has really tarnished his career IMO with the movies he appears in these days.

If this was about of all time I would include DDL no doubt. His performance in "There Will be Blood" was astonishing as always but his previous film before that was Gang of New York about 8/9 years ago.
