So a local radio station did a rock countdown here of the top 1019 songs voted for by the listeners. Each listener could vote for 20 songs. only one rule, that you couldn't repeat an artist. The end result, everyone thought, was a rather rubbish list. It's here if you want to see it. London Calling topped it.

Rock Count Down Ballot :: Offical List::

And here's what I voted for, in no particular order:
1)Alice in Chains - Down In a Hole (Unplugged)

5)Bob Seger, Against the Wind
6)Bruce Springsteen, Brilliant Disguise
7)The Clash, Brand New Cadillac
8)Creedance Clearwater Revival, Midnight Special

16)Soundgarden, Room a Thousand Years
17)Jimi Hendrix, All Along the Watchtower
18)Led Zeppelin, Kashmir
19)Metallica, One
20)The Rolling Stones, Beast of Burden

I started going down alphabetically my list of artists in my phone and by the time I reached E I already had 15 songs. If I sit and think about it it'll probably be completely different.

Thought i'd give it a go, no real order here.

1) Prince - The Pope
2) Marvin Gaye - Heard it through the Grapevine
3) Otis Redding - Dock of the Bay
4) Al Green - Tired of Being Alone
5) Bon Jovi - Always
6) Hendrix - Along the watchtower
7) Animals - House of the rising sun
8) Heart - Crazy on you
9) Rush - Nobody's Hero
10) Queen - Brighton Rock
11) David Bowie - Life on Mars
12) Living Colour - Cult of Personality
13) Incubus - Drive
14) Madness - Baggy Trousers
15) Aerosmith - Dream On
16) Krezip - I would stay
17) Sugarhill Gang - Rapper's Delight
18) Lynrd Skynyrd - Freebird
19) Jethro Tull - Aqualung
20) Yngwie Malmsteen - Black Star

rock you say? I think everyone's list would be quite rubbish in the end. Seriously, though, that station needs to clarify what rock is, some non rock songs in that list, imo. These would be my 20 submissions, in no particular order:

  1. Black Sabbath - Paranoid
  2. Led Zeppelin - Black Dog
  3. The Rolling Stones - Get Off My Cloud
  4. The Beatles - Revolution
  5. Cream - Sunshine of Your Love
  6. Journey - Anyway You Want It
  7. Def Leppard - Photograph
  8. The Verve - Bittersweet Symphony
  9. Pearl Jam - Corduroy
  10. Bon Jovi - In and Out of Love
  11. Boston - More than a Feeling
  12. Kiss - Rock n' Roll All Night
  13. The Byrds - Turn, Turn, Turn
  14. Guns n' Roses - Paradise City
  15. Golden Earring - Radar Love
  16. Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit
  17. Metallica - Enter Sandman
  18. AC/DC - Hell's Bells
  19. The Cult - Fire Woman
  20. Van Halen - Panama

Awesome list, I could have that a playlist and happily listen - I'll compile mine after some deep thinking.

I could add five more:

Alice in Chains - Man in the Box
Stone Temple Pilots - Big Bang Baby
Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers - Don't Do Me Like That
R.E.M.- Turn You Inside Out
Sublime - Santeria

For R.E.M I'd have said Losing My Religion but you can't be perfect all the time can you Doc?

Like the other four though!

Turn You Inside Out is one of their finest moments, imo. Losing My Religion is a bit soft, if only because of the nature of the rest of the record, as good as it is.
It being a rock list I tried to keep things on the heavier side of the spectrum.

No Hendrix? No Bowie?

I don't like my list because it doesn't have GnR, STP or Nirvana but I have no idea which song I'd drop. Probably none.

It is hard to narrow down. I tried to cover the best of the best, obviously I can't get 'em all. I'm sure the absence of the Doors from my list will ruffle some feathers.

Boston, Kiss, Tom Petty, Journey and their likes would never make it to my list.

I don't particularly like Boston myself but I also try to be a bit egalitarian in these things. Same with Kiss but that's a great song from them. Tom Petty is an acquired taste but he is rock, right to the core.

I won't hear a bad word about Journey, though.

All the songs you listed by those bands are great but not good enough for such a short list. imho, of course.

Lists are highly subjective, I'll agree with you there.

Mine would make a better mix tape than yours, though. :p

Every song on your list has been overplayed to death. Mine has songs that'll slowly grow on you because you havent heard them enough. Your tape will sit next to the Michael jackson greatest hits tape and collect dust. Mine will grow old with scratches after repeated playing. My list > Your list

Against the Wind?

Do you want to make out now or later?

Though in my defence I should have had Sweet Home Alabama or Freebird on that list. It's not easy making these damned things.

Good rant, btw. I'm nearly in stitches.

Lazy and too obvious. All four of the above bands had far better songs. Teen Spirit is one of the worst songs on Nevermind.

Oh The Guilt for me. Had it on a split with a Jesus Lizard track. Sold it for £65 a couple of years back on Ebay.

Bon Jovi don't belong on any list with the word "Rock" on it. fecking poncey twats.

Being that it was associated with a radio station I considered radio friendliness/playability/ mass popularity for most of the entires I proposed.

Personally I'd have put I Was Made For Loving You over Rock 'n Roll All Night but not everyone liked it when Kiss did disco.

Prior to Sandman, you never heard Metallica on the radio so even if I like Welcome Home Sanitarium more, Sandman fits better on the list.

I agree that Teen Spirit is not the best Nirvana song but among the masses blah etc. I'd take Heart Shaped Box over it anytime.

I'd disagree about Sabbath, Paranoid is a great song. Furious pace to it and pure rock. Nothing lazy about that, if I wanted to be like mehro I'd have chosen War Pigs or something from the Dio years.

Dressed to Kill is easily their best studio album. Strutter or Deuce for me.

So many great songs to choose from. Everyone hated him at the time but the Dio years were their best imo. Paranoid just sounds so dated compared to something like Heaven and Hell or Country Girl.

It's not easy to pick that's for sure. I completely forgot about Sweet Leaf.

What's that supposed to mean?

I picked my favorites. I love Fairies wear boots so it went on the list. It was either that or hand of Doom.

If the point is to create a list to rock out to my half arsed attempt would be something like this:

Neil Young - Keep on rockin' in the free world
Sonic Youth - Sugar Kane
Pearl Jam - Even Flow
Oasis - Live Forever
Alice In Chains - Junkhead

The Beatles - Helter Skelter
Elvis Costello - Less Than Zero
Screaming Trees - Nearly Lost You
Nirvana - Lithium
Jeff Hanson - You Are The Reason
The Libertines - Time for Heroes
Guns N' Roses - You Could Be Mine
Grandaddy - Summer Here Kids

Read thread title. Only one song per artist.

My point was that you don't have to like the persons in the band, as long as you dig their music.
