The Killzone 2 Thread

I'm a very mediocre gamer, so usually need all the help I can get.

I think that the way this does control - ie. not being a camera on a stick, having the weight, inertia, and no aiming assistance is going to level things up a bit. It seems that a lot of people that say that they are good at the likes of COD4 are moaning a little about the way this game works. I used to be a very good gamer, but then 3D came along and confused me slightly, and still does in a way, to the point that I'm not very good at games like COD4. Maybe it's something to do with my reactions getting slower as I get older, but with games like this though where it's not just run around all guns blazing and is a bit more methodical and tactical it becomes a different matter.

I'm the same. It's probably mainly down to my sluggish, middle-aged reactions but also because I can never be arsed with online FPS so don't get enough practice to get any better. I get no great pleasure out of being repeatedly pwned by Chinese 13 year-olds you see.

With every game, I much prefer the actual mission part to the multi-player stuff. Call me old-school but for me, gaming is about immersing myself in a strange and interesting environment, following some sort of storyline and narrative arc. If I want to compete against other people I'm only interested in Pro Evo or other sports sims. Apart from that I'd rather just play real sports if I want to get my competitive juices going.

So yeah, methodical and tactical is where it's at for me. Which is why I think I'm gonna fecking love this game. Have you noticed the way your comrades jump out of the way of your sights, every time you pan your gun across them? Unbeleivable graphics aside, it's the little touches like this which make me think this game is gonna knock my socks off...

Will play it tonight...download finished this morning for me.

Clunky controls or not, my problem will be adjusting to a controller again(Which i will be horrible at first) and eventually i should get better at it.

So has it met expectations?

Interestingly enough, I've always been a PC FPS man myself, probably due to the fact that I started back in the original Team Fortress and Counter Strike days, and just find the mouse and keyboard much better. CoD4 was brilliant for me, because it was a hugely reaction based game, and I've always got the feeling that console FPS games just don't really have that element like PC FPS games do, possibly because you just can't aim as fast.

Anyway, Killzone 2 is the only console FPS I've ever been arsed to by, largely due to the fact that most of them have been on PC too, but also because it looks graphically (almost) as good as Crysis and could actually be good gameplay and multiplayer wise as well.

My point is, I really want this game, but i'll probably be god-awful at it, cause I've never really played a console FPS before, and without blowing my trumpets, that'll be difficult to get used to, cause I've always been fairly fecking brilliant at PC FPS games.

Crumbs.

I will never be confident aiming with a controller and will never be as good. Its not too bad though don't forget everyone else is the same - I feel the quality of players drops on consoles anyway so you have a chance.

I don't find it heavy either, its okay. I'm shite anyway try a headshot and I'm like a sitting duck trying to eye the head up for a few seconds [I kinda' forget/don't use the sight as well] you can take a good beating before dying though which helps.

Its a good game. Certainly feels up there amongst the best. Only played it quickly so will have another go later. As much as I love single player, multiplayer provides longevity and a different dimension. I hope they have made a good effort of it, that'll be critical sales wise as well.

Their fecking helmets don't make life any easier, that's for sure!

IMO, what seperates this from other FPS - apart from the amazing graphics - is the way it feels so real.

Your gun judders in your hands on automatic fire, your own muzzle flash can dazzle you, grenades aren't perfectly accurate over long distances etc. etc. etc. It makes it a wee bit more difficult to play and you can't take down hordes of enemies with perfectly aimed head-shots but it also makes the whole experience much more gritty and immersive. Which is a very good thing.

Downloading the demo now, very slow. 21% so far.

Not going to bother with the demo - They take to long for me tbf.

Is it worth buying this game?

This game is fecking brilliant, obviously the demo is a little bit short but it has the same kinda langth as Uncharted did and even with that it made me go buy it straight away. The AI in the game is fantastic, still getting used to the controls as they are way more accurate than COD or anything else I have ever played.

Deffo gonna pre-order this puppy.

First batch of reviews seem to be very good, more notably the 9.4 from IGN. Looks like Guerilla really pulled this off.

Played this this morning, very impressed and will most definately be getting it.

Edge magazine seems to have fecked that up....

Great Graphics - Tick
Great Sound - Tick
Great Gunplay - Tick
Great AI - Tick
Great Multiplayer - Tick
Oscar Winning Story - Cross
No Foul Mouthed Language - Cross
Co-op - Cross

7/10 :D

I love Edge magazine, I even have the first issue somewhere.

Played the demo for the first time earlier, I was impressed by everything about it, graphics, AI, atmosphere, gun recoil etc. But the one thing that always gets me with console shooters is the controls, being a mainly pc gamer going from mouse and keyboard to pad just makes the aiming so tough for me but thats not the games fault. I am sure if I fiddled with the sensitivity I would get a decent feel with practice.

Not gonna buy it straight away but not doubt will eventually.

set the controls to alternate 2 then max out the sensitivity on x and y axis. also tick the box for zoom hold, means yo can pop in and out of aiming ala COD. Found it much more satisfying after thse changes

Gonne pre-order her tomorrow

Some mixed reviews for killzone.

The general consensus is that it looks brilliant, but its hardly groundbreaking in terms of the genre. The story is also apparently very poor.

mine arrived today but no one was in so ill have to go get it 2moro from the sorting office

They've been pretty poor in recent times. GTA IV 10/10 Halo 3 10/10 Fable 2 9/10.

On the other hand Mass Effect gets a 7(appeared as a 6 first) and Fallout 3 got a 7 (despite picking up some of their annual awards  )

Their elitist stance on practically everything just deters me really.

Whats the story like in Halo 3?

Fallout 3 deserves far more than a 7.

And looking back, im not sure GTA was worth a 10.

It's a blow the feck out of everything type of game, not an RPG!

And what the hell can it do to redefine the genre exactly? In its multiplayer, it does. Why can't a game just be good at what it is doing? Why does it have to do something new in any case?

I said some pages back that I thought that it would get mixed reviews, because of its baggage. It did a lot better than I thought it would.

Wot?

The funny thing with them is that you never know the person actually doing the review. I always preferred the ZZAP64 and CRASH way of doing it where there were three of them, and each one gave their own opinion, then you got a mix of that for the main score.

Wot?

A solid original story is important. For me, that’s why Bioshock will live long on my memory.

I seem to remember you saying that FPS's have reached their saturation point.

Killzone will be every Sony fan boys wet dream - you best get a new box of tissues Weaste.

I think that it has a very strong back story, just not necessarily a good in game one - if it really needs to have one. Not had time to buy it this morning, had to go and see my dad in hospital, so I don't know how much of the back story is on the disk.
