Some techno babble:

There's much more to the Killzone 2 engine than deferred rendering and screen passes; in fact, Arjan mentioned that every composite that is rendered within the game is placed solely upon the SPUs to lock in the framerate at a solid 30 FPS. During small battles, one or two SPUs will pick up a majority of the action, but during heavy firefights with large explosions and numerous characters onscreen, all six SPUs will pick up the load and balance everything accurately. Surprisingly, even within the heaviest firefight onscreen, Arjan pointed out that the largest load on each one of the SPUs didn't exceed 60%, which ensured that the framerate remained consistent throughout the game.

Six SPUs? Strange that, surely one should be there to do the audio???

Ok, that's enough.

Looks alright doesn't it... Never played the first one or know much about it but I've put this down as a definite buy now.

17th February 2009, says the internet.

First one was potentially a very good game let down by its technical flaws, hopefully Guerilla wont repeat the same mistake.

How do the graphics compare to that first E3 footage back in 2006 I think it was?

This might help RedKaos, it's some comparisons from the original CG trailer to the E3 2007 build, to the preview build (which is said to be about 3 months old) that the journalists have been playing. Sorry that the pictures are small, but they do show at least the changes made in terms of art and also compromises that had to be made from the CG Render to get it running realtime.

Everythings become more black, even the characters lol.

But in all seriously, is it me or does it look better now?

Gears of War 2 > Killzone.

Get over it Sony fanboys. :)

Such a ridiculous statement, GoW 1 + 2 are in reality, fairly average FPS games that have added NOTHING new to the genre, and it's purely the fact that they're on a console that they get such praise. The fact is they've got nothing on Half Life 2 and its episodes(the greatest FPS ever made, by a mile), Bioshock, CoD4 etc:
It's a pity, but purely because FPS's are developed on consoles, they seem to get far more praise than if they were on a PC, presumably because there's far less to compare them to.

Anyway, Killzone 2 looks incredible, I've never been a fan of Console FPS games but this really does look the shit, and I'll probably be buying it when it comes out. I hope it pays off for Sony, they've put shocking amounts of money in to the game and they really need it to pay off if they want the PS3 to start beating the X360.

Just leave it, dont develop this into a console war thread, plenty of those lying around.

what will killzone 2 add to the genre though? the ability to break off plaster pieces from walls?

Well we won't know til it actually comes out, but hopefully it will. Already we can see the graphics are way beyond any other FPS bar Crysis, so that's a good start, lets just hope the gameplay matches it. It just needs something unique to separate, HL2 had its great vehicles and the grav gun and such, CoD4 was really cinematic and has those brilliant sniper missions etc, Killzone 2 needs something like that to really get people talking.

Looks fecking immense this game.

On the technical level it is immense. This is the first game that we will see that uses PS3 hardware fully in the way it was designed to work. I don't know how factual it is, and we will not know until they do a presentation of how they have done this, but the developer has said that by using the Cell, they have taken as much as 50% of the workload off the GPU (in this case RSX). I will leave it up to you people to idealise what that means.

I think that you will find that it brings a lot of new things to the table. Many people first complained about the weight and realism of the game and how it took quite some time to get used to. Then there is the cover mechanic. I think a lot of people used to COD will be very confused when they first play this game. COD4 got lots of praise, what the feck did it add apart from getting certain old things right? Its single player isn't that good.

For a console game, there is nothing to touch it. Crysis? PS3 doesn't have 2+ GB of RAM or the bandwidth to render 1080p full on AA and AF and 60fps. On the art and feel level I think that it is superior to Crysis but that is something else. As for Killzone 2 gameplay, we can only go off impressions from the preview and those playing the beta, and both in general are very positive.
