The Killzone 2 Thread

How about play the game and see for yourself? You're all very good at telling us how good the Mario games are, even how good Galaxy is, how about trying to play one of the best games of this cycle? PS3 might not be able to push the graphical limits of a top end PC, but it is capable of doing certain things better than a top of the range PC. Play it on hard, then play it on crushing.

Maybe thats because unlike a lot of people on the net, I only give opinion about gameplay in games I've actually played?

It's a novel concept, I know, hence why I was asking you the question.

You seem to think I'm trying to disprove anything you are saying, that's not the case, I'm asking questions to someone who's opinions I've come to trust more than most.

It's the way they attack you and use cover, and react to destructable cover. They are constantly seeking the best route to flank you in numbers, using cover to do it. Unless you play it then it's difficult to explain exactly, but it's quite clever, especially when combined with their wonderful animation system. And the AI system changes with the difficulty level, it's not just shot numbers. It seems that Killzone has just pulled most of the code from Uncharted, but then Guerilla were also mentioned in the credits for Uncharted AFAIR.

Do we know anything about what A.I theory they used? I vaguely remember you posting a document actually, but I can't remember if there was anything about the A.I.

This is definitely one of the cool things about the PS3, the way you can separate processes and take stuff like A.I and Physics to a new level. It's still nothing a high end PC (or even a mid-range by todays standards) couldn't keep up with, but it's certainly something a 360 would struggle to achieve.

Note, however, this is different to saying that a 360 couldn't still pull off the same games with roughly the same effect, as it could. However the PS3 could do things much more advanced and true, less faking. I think you'll find this is one major thing that developers are having to adjust too, the PS3 is much less about faking things for games than any machine before it.

I don't know, I'd have to search for the document, there was one that was presented about their AI at a GDC or similar.

You can briefly see the basic AI in KZ2 towards the end of this if it's still working.

I don't know if they have lifted code from Uncharted, I'm just speculating, but there is a lot of sharing going on between the Sony studios, so it would make sense for them to do so rather than trying to reinvent the wheel.

Just to keep this on the radar.

Looks immense, actually glad it was put back to 2009 so I have time for the likes of Fallout and Fable II.

Do you know when exactly the ETA of release is? I just hope it doesnt coincide with the likes of Mass Effect 2, BioShock 2, Resident Evil 5 or Stargate worlds etc....2009 looks mad as it already is.

gigolos generally work evenings, Weaste. he's probably still sleeping off last nights shift. :smirk:

Haven't had the time yet Weaste, too busy with college, work and my studies.

If you want the beta code I'll PM it you, as I doubt I will have time to play it any time soon. Though I don't know whether that code is linked to my account or not.

I got the beta for this last week myself. I've been very impressed with it so far. I think this game will be absolutely huge online. Probably the heir to COD4's crown.

I think that this game is going to blow people's socks and heads off. ;)

Whatever it ends up as, it will show the PS3 in its true light (ie. doing somethings the XB360 cannot do), and will be the first game to really do so. Not long to wait either. :)

:D

Lots of great games coming out, and have come out recently, shame I can't afford them all:(

Killzone 2 and Resident Evil 5 are my definite purchases for the first few months on 2009.

On the subject of Resident Evil 5 we need an official thread.

As some of you may know, apart from Elvis, some people have been playing the multiplayer beta of this over the past 4 weeks. The thing looks fabulous for a console game (look closely). Has anyone else been playing it?

IGN preview of the multiplayer beta: http://ps3.ign.com/articles/931/931780p1.html

Ah Killzone 2... what won't you do to try and fool us, you little minx. First you feed us that CG trailer and try to subtly pass it off as real footage. Pfft. What did you take us for?

Then, once the little CG rouse was up, you tried to claim that, despite the fact your trailer wasn't actually in-game footage, that the final game would actually run and play like said trailer. Ooh, we'll believe it when we see it Mister Sony man.

And now you've thrown this beta our way – surely yet another wily piece of propaganda, you trickster dickster! Sure, we're pushing buttons, wiggling analogue sticks - and stuff is happening on screen as a result – but this isn't the actual game, surely! There's no way a console game can look this good, right - what sort of foul wizardry is this?

This can't be real. It simply can't be. Sony and Guerrilla Games couldn't have created an end result that (almost) matches the infamous target footage revealed at E3 all those years ago. Could they?

Well, unless our dainty little peepers are deceiving us, the answer to that question is 'yes'. Guerrilla Games have made an absolute red hot go of trying to match up to the incredible CG footage shown in 2005. Because undoubtedly, when you first hop into the small scale beta currently doing the rounds, the first thing you notice (and by notice we mean the synapse connected to your retina splinters into a thousand microscopic pieces) is Killzone 2's mighty visual prowess.

......

That being said, it's hard to see how anyone could deny the sheer technical achievement of the game. No online shooter in the console market could possible claim to look better than Killzone 2, or feature more atmosphere and eye for detail. We get the distinct impression that Sony, after the guffawing of the gaming community post-E3 2005, demanded that Killzone 2 match up to that infamous CG trailer - regardless of the development time or expense. What we're seeing and playing today is the end result of that self-righteous rage, and we absolutely love it. We reckon you'll be pleasantly surprised by just how well Killzone 2 looks and plays. Haters be damned – you'd all best be prepared to chow down on a hefty serving of humble pie on this one...

Quick questions for those in the multiplayer beta:

1) Are the weapons well-balanced? Or is there a majority of characters using the same overpowered weapon like in the first Gears of War?

2) Any sense of teamwork? Or just a bunch of individual commandos?

3) How does the frame rate handle in large battles?

4) Controls? opinions on them?

Cheers.

I don't know, as I didn't get a key! Elvis did, but hasnt used it.

All I can say is what impressions that I've read.

1) Yes. Different weapons (depending on your class) seem to give you different advantages and disadvantages.

2) As long as you are in a clan rather than playing with random people. It seems a lot of arseholes use the rocket launcher willy nilly and don't give a shit if they kill their team mates or even themselves.

3) It seems to hold up very well, apart from when you get 32 player rocket launcher clusterfecks.

4) It seems that they are and will be fully configurable. However, it plays different to other shooters as it gives realistic weight to everything rather than being a gun attached to a camera that can turn on a sixpence. Some reviewers such as those on Gamespot and 1UP have moaned that it doesn't control like COD4 does, but then again they have been found out to have only have played the thing for 3 hours or less. From what I've seen, if you stick at it, it becomes very natural.

It's apparently an old build the beta is running on, and the main idea of the beta is to get the network code right and find bugs. The beta forums (which I think Elvis should be able to access) are apparently very busy and the developers are taking a lot of suggestions on board. They still have another 3 months to release, so it should end up very polished.

Oh and just watched the GameSpot UK preview - they too were full of praise but claimed the movement felt awkward?
