Think this deserves its own thread.

Any fans here? Ironic name given that you can't really dance to it but, since a mate got me into this just under 2 years back, I've been astonished by the quality of the music throughout the genre.

Some of it is simply overwhelming in terms of its brilliance. Aphex Twin was the first IDM artist said mate got me into, and fecking hell I'm not half grateful. The man's a fecking genius. If I was given, say, 5 years to do nothing but work on coming up with something to rival the following song, I still wouldn't come close to making anything half as good:

Cock (lololol!2) Ver/10.

I mean, how the feck is that possible?! Imagine if someone attempted to compose a full orchestration of that using every single sound? They'd have to have a special stand that would accomodate the feck knows how many musicians needed to play all the sounds that appear just once in the whole track. There has been an attempt at this by a group called Alarm Will Sound, and it's a fecking good effort to be fair.

That beat...I'm not entirely sure it remains unchanged for anything more than 2 seconds throughout the whole song. How anyone can be arsed (or is capable of) making something like that, I'll never know. It goes wonderfully with that evil sounding synth that comes in at 1:36. I listed this tune because I felt it provided the most accurate reflection of him as a musician, but he's written many staggering compositions.

Another IDM artist I've taken a liking to goes by the name of Mike Paradinas (µ-Ziq). Must say, I was taken by surprise when I first heard a few of the songs of Royal Astronomy but, after, er, purchasing the Tango n' Vectif album, it made me realise that he's not just impressive, but an extraordinarily gifted musician. He's a man of many fine melodies but, as shown by the next two songs, he's capable of producing some technically outstanding beats:

Siege of Antioch

This is brilliant. I've no idea how he makes the melody that comes in at 1:45 sound coherent or even slightly appropriate next to that beat. It's an utterly ruthless beat with some fairly evil sounding bass, yet he manages to combine that with some beautiful melodic work. How?

Hwicci Song

What an unusually interesting song, this is!
I can't actually decide whether it's the sort of song you hear when you're 5 years old at the circus, or the type of song you'd put on in the background whilst doing dreadful things to several mangled 5 year old corpses. Despite this, again, there are some incredibly impressive melodies, some of which, to my liking, made with orchestral instruments, and there's obviously another ridiculous beat. He is a genius, to be quite frank.

I'd love to chat on and list a few songs from Luke Vibert (Wagon Christ) and Nobukazu Takemura but, typically, I can't be arsed to say too much more. In my defence, I've had yet another sleep-less night.

In short, Wagon Christ is a bit like a mix of Aphex Twin and Faze action (another genius, basically), where as Nobukazu Takemura is talented to the extent that it's not even realistic. I'd never heard of him until said mate copied his "Child's View" album for me, but fecking hell...every single track on that album is of the very highest order. There are some incredible songs, but it's not necessarily the complexity and production of each song that makes this album so impressive - it's the diversity of Takemura in regards to the atmosphere he generates with different songs. To be honest, it took me a while to start appreciating his music, but I'm now firmly of the opinion that he's one of the most diverse and creative musicians alive.

Nobukazu Takemura - Rill

Wagon Christ - Saddic Gladdic

I've still only really scratched the surface (there are so many more songs and artists I wanted to list) but I'll leave it to you lot to hopefully expand my knowledge of IDM. I can appreciate that it's not the sort of music that appeals to everyone - it was a bit of an acquired taste for me - but I should imagine there's a few on here that are into it as well.

Ah yes, forgot to put this one in:

Squarepusher - Hello Meow (live version)

That may well be my favourite song of all time.

Honestly I have no idea what separates Intelligent Dance Music from other dance music. Looking at wikipedia it seems to me it's more of a scene in the 90's then a genre per se.

Wikipedia even has a list of IDM artists and there are some artists there I know and like but I could never say that I would put them in the same category (apart from the music being electronic).

However, I rate both Aphex Twin and Squarepusher highly so this does interest me.

Two points though I'd like to make
1. I know wikipedia isn't always entirely correct.
2. I'm usually not to bothered with categorising music into sub-genres, so my lack of knowledge about IDM stops me from posting songs in this thread until further notice ;)
