Masterstroke from Ole putting him at left back, free from the shackles of Mctominay
He had time to see it and make a few steps to get into position to control it. If he sent it any more forward the defender would have cleared it. Yes, on another day when Ronaldo plays as a statue it would go out of play.
0:16 in case anyone cares.
Fred comes on at left back, intercepts a poor pass in the left back position and then puts in a cross from the left wing.
Why are you going on about midfield?
That’s actually nonsense. He has his head up before he makes the cross and he plays it right on to Ronaldo’s head when Ronaldo is not in a typical spot to target the ball when you make a cross into a crowded box. What’s the problem with giving some credit where it’s due? I’m sure you‘re quick enough to comment when he misplaces a pass so why not be objective and give credit when he does something right?I mentioned this in my second post. But he absolutely did not pick Ronaldo out, he’s pinged it over and hoped for the best. It’s whatever really. Good job we scored from it, never worth a thread.
Because he intercepts the ball in the left midfield area, plays it forward with a searching ball and gets into a decent position to receive it again. Something Pogba and McT managed to avoid doing for 80 plus minutes.
He was coming forward from the LB position and was slightly in from the left when he made the interception. He then ran forward down the wing and put in the cross. He wouldn't have been there if he had played in the middle so it's a bit of an odd interpretation of events.
Hell of a shank straight on Ronaldos bonceit was actually a shit cross, considering the timing etc, should have been put straight into the mixer, not shanked out to the edge of the box.
YawnHe was probably trying to pass it back to Bruno..
I’m jokingYawn
so true! He’s also left footed. So the cross was on his good foot. To those saying it was a shite cross? Same lads are probably saying play *anyone else* there every day but almost total silence about how Pogba and McT were dreadful in there last night. “Play McT as the 6, he’s a miles better player” “Even though Pogba can’t really defend at all and takes ages on the ball and loses it at least half the time he’s still surely a better option than Fred”
Fred comes on and someone finally wins the ball in midfield on the counter (you know actual midfielder stuff?) and knocks it forward and then sends in the telling cross to Ronaldo
Redcafe : he’s still shite, he didn’t mean it, terrible cross etc
Never change lads. At least this way you can’t ever be wrong. Even when you are.
i made the quite obvious point that it was the last seconds of the game, obviously you play the percentage ball, which is what he was trying because that's what most players are conditioned to do. it was down to ronaldo and lingard that something came of it. if your gonna credit fred for doing something extra-ordinary for that, then it really is clutching at straws. might as well give fred the red a pat on the back too.

I agreed that under normal circumstances he might not have ran down the left wing for the cross (but he does get forward on the left side from central midfield for Brazil quite a lot) but his interception in the midfield is where he absolutely would have been if he was playing central midfield and that was as much a part of the winning play as the cross. It’s splitting hairs to suggest otherwise. I don’t remember Pogba and McT intercepting and setting us up on the counter at all? They were just played straight through over and over.

What you write about Fred doesn’t have any bearing on how good he is as a player, but absolutely has a bearing on how good you are as a poster.
Son, he mishit it...

It was a poor cross and was going out of play. No way was he picking Ronaldo out there (who had to backtrack to reach it). Any other day and it would have gone out for a throw in.
I hope these are troll posts because otherwise it's really sad too see people unable to give any appreciation to a player for a good move just because he was poor in some other games. He was probably trying to pass it back to Bruno..

That it was a decent first time cross that lead to our win; not the "mishit it" as you put it.What's to appreciate? It was a cross, we had a break. Nothing more, nothing less. It's just...normal.
Poor Fred. Picks out our key man with the final move of a must win, high pressure game…no credit.
Apparently he shanked it onto the head of our biggest aerial threat.
It was a great pass, Jessie had a great touch to play it away from defenders and Ronaldo finished it with authority.
All three played their roles beautifully and Ole deserves credit for his changes coming off at the right time.
Anything else is just bias and trying to fit your own narrative:
It’s ok to not think Ole/Fred/Lingard are up for it and still give them credit where it’s due. Everything doesn’t have to align with your own argument!
This. A entire thread was unnecessary but the wind-up replies are much worse. He won the ball , passed it and didn't stand still (I'm looking at you Diogo), moved immediately to receive it in an advanced position and cross it in to the correct area balls should go (ie not the defenders head). He does none of that we draw. He’s also left footed. So the cross was on his good foot. To those saying it was a shite cross? Absolutely true. Feck me to start a thread with Fred's cross is red rage to a bull. Its just getting really boring now....
Naw he knew what to do it’s quite a routine thing to do in football if you’re chasing a game late on, stand it to the back post, hope your centre forward gets a knock down and someone finishes it off.I thought he didn't know what to do at that moments and just decided to put it in the box the best he could with the angle. It worked out.
He gets the stick he earns by not always doing what’s best. He gets praise or at least should do for doing the simple positive things right like passing it accurately to someone in a red shirt… that’s if we’re playing in red that is!Fred gets a lot of unnecessary stick on here and his attributes are downplayed massively - it was a perfectly good cross and a crucial part of the buildup to the eventual goal.
It just wasn’t that great of a cross, barely worth a mention let alone a thread. It found one of our players, so that’s something at least. People don’t have a problem giving him credit if he does something really good, this cross wasn’t anything worth talking about though. Don’t really know why so many people are struggling with it.

I don’t think he’s completely useless, just not the type of player that’s ever going to lift us to where we should be
Let’s start a ‘How Good Was Lingard’s Touch And Lying Down?’ Threadffs a dedicated thread for that cross. In fact, Lingard's role in goal was the important bit. First the touch to give it back to Ronaldo and then lying as low as possible after quickly anticipating what is going to happen next.
That last sentence sums up why we screw upIt was still better than almost all of our attempts to cross in that game.
Greenwood to Cavani was masterpiece, other than that Fred made the right decision not to hold ball in last minute and just send it where goalscorers are. Sometimes simplicity and not overcomplicating things up is the best thing to do.
