Sky: Richard Arnold to become new CEO of Manchester United

Does the role of a CEO has any interaction with the technical director ? (Fletcher)

You'd imagine that they would work together.

Too much to ask that he's learned 1 or 2 things of what not to do from Woodward, ie leave the footballing side up to footballing people?
Did he not say he wouldn't be involved in the football side of things as he knows nothing about it? Sure I read that on here somewhere.

I mean, that’s not really a surprise or a secret is it?

Yeah at this point the power over footballing decisions will be between Murtough and Rangnick (if he does well enough as a manager).

I don't mind an accountant as a CEO. We are an extremely well run business, revenues, valuation all up significantly since the Glazers took over (much better performance than our PL counterparts).

Any change is a welcome change from Woodward. 8 years of bad decisions and focus on finance over football and common sense needs to stop.

Woodward has resigned. Into Chief Executive? Well then, he hasnt resigned has he? So fecking blatant. Change a couple of peoples job titles and nobody will be the wiser. The lack of respect from the Glazer's to the fan base is just staggering.

As long as he wont mess around football decisions like Ed did it will be good I guess.

So what was Woodward's title? or are my reading and comprehension skills letting me down?
Chief Executive

Woodward has resigned, he was Chief Executive, so stop losing your shit. It was however reported that Woodward would go into a consultancy role for the Glazers, this doesn't necessarily mean into matters regarding United, it could very well mean he'll consult them on their new purchase of the cricket team.

«Executive Vice Chairman», it’s the same job just different title.

Woodward made a lot of awkward mistakes especially as it regards to transfer dealings,
Allowed himself to be bullied by clubs into paying huge amount for average players,
80m pounds for maguire is a mistake that can never be accepted in a serious big team like Bayern, Barcelona and Madrid.
He made us look like desperate clowns in the market.
Gave underperforming players ridiculous contract
Messed things up!
I hope this new CEO will checkmate all his mistakes

In theory that would mean he makes the money decisions running the club without having to ask the Glazers on whether they can buy this player or spend money on a new training facility etc. Maybe the thinking has changed, Glazers say the club can spend x amount a season as long as there's still y profit, you run it. As I said that's in theory. We will see.

Not really in business. VC means you can suggest things but the Chairman makes the final decision. CEO means the buck stops with you. Whether that will be the same under the Glazers is anyone's guess, but the fact they have changed the title could just mean that.

I know what it means, but I‘m fairly certain Arnold’s role is going to be *very* similar to Woodward’s.

This was reported every month since Woodward resigned.

Will be interesting to see if he takes up the position of Vice Chairman and Executive Director on the management board as held by Woodward, immediately below the Gazier brothers.

Not necessarily true IMO. Bezos is not Amazon’s CEO but he is the main guy there. When Eric Schmidt was Google’s CEO, it still was Larry Page the one who made all the big decisions, including confirming new hirings or vetoing them.

Arnold will answer to the Glazers, no doubt there. It is the same thing as before, just a slightly different title.

Even Gill answered to the Glazers, the biggest difference is that, as Arnold has also promised, he won't be interfering with the football side to the extent of dominating the club's transfer policy like Woodward was doing. If he gives people who know what they are doing the space to do their thing and obviously within certain budgetary parameters then he will be more successful than Woodward.

Yes the owners are the final buck stop, but maybe they are taking a less hands on approach and changing the title of the main underling means more responsibility than what Woodward had. Were all guessing and will have to see if there is any visible change over the next 12 months

I don't really understand who is who, doing what is what - but this sounds good/ to be on a sporting side.
Sounds like nothing much has changed, the roles Murtough/Fletch do will focus even more on the football side than they already do and Arnold would just be commercial/money side of things

Yeah I read this in the Athletic this morning.

The piece did seem suspiciously positive about Arnold but it definitely seems the club is aware that their footballing operations have been disastrous. I'm still kind of worried how vague the long term role of Ralf as he's definitely the most qualified at the club to be the one overseeing things.

I could be wrong but I think Richard Arnold was a dreaded appointment for years because he knows feck all about the footballing side. He called Ole an phenomenal appointment (or similar) and he couldn't point to the right stands at OT when interviewed.

However, it turns out he may well be perfect for us because unlike Woody, he is smart enough to know where he's stupid and will delegate footballing matters to footballing people.

Now it's a case of Murtough making the right moves. He also strikes me as clever, going round Europe to build relations and lean on experience that he doesn't have yet. He is a big admirer of Rangnick and seems to have brought him in because he knows he'll need to lean on Ralph for big decisions.

Fletcher may well also be good. He seems to be more on the ground looking at the granular side of things to help Murtough/Rangnick make the higher level decisions accordingly. Fletcher was a model professional, humble and understood the stature of the club. I know a lot of people want to mark Fletch as guilty by association to Ole but I think he might be a valuable staff member.

^ This is how I think we are looking to shape up. I think it's positive but who knows what it'll actually turn out as.

Where does Rangnick fit into this? If the club intend to take the consultant role seriously, might as well back him now and make a statement. So the players know he won't be leaving the club this summer.

Yeah going from Woodward making decisions to someone who is/more with sporting people sounds positive.

I get the feeling this is a hedging of bets by the club, in case he continues as manager/head coach next season. If they set his future in stone now, it would just look incompetent again should they rip up those plans. I think unless Poch becomes available here is a very good chance that Ralf is manager moving beyond his 6 month interim.

You make it sound very positive so I'll hope your right
