Should we consider selling Harry Maguire?

By bringing in dead wood which we'd have to get rid off after he got sacked?
He spent 400mil in 2 years and brought in some absolute dross. Sure he won the league but look at the meltdown that followed.
Morata 66mil, Bakayoko 40mil, Batshuayi 39mil, Drinkwater 38mil, brought back fecking David Luiz for 35mil , Zappacosta 25mil, Emerson 20mil.
Chelsea's 2017-18 transfers have to be one of the worst ever - 270mil spent and the only player that was at least semi decent was Giroud for 17mil.
Sure he might win the league this season with Inter but it wont be cause Inter are good but more to do with Juve getting worse.
That makes for grim reading to be fair, but of course the money wasted is only public knowledge if united are involved.

Merson knows ball:

Was making some valid points until he brought up Lukaku and saying Rashford and Martial don't score goals...

The thing with Maguire and the defence is how high the line they are playing, everyone can see its ridiculous, it's almost arrogance, like Liverpool and look what happened to them, but they get away with it most of the time.

Maguire and the defence had a string of 7 or 8 excellent games last season, his games against City and Liverpool he looked imperious, the defence, that he played every game had the 2nd most clean sheets in all competitions in Europes top 5 leagues last season, stuff like this is forgotten about quickly in today's game when there are opportunities to jump on mistakes to criticise

A big reason why Liverpool's line doesn't get exposed, along with their pacier centre backs, is that their midfield is hard pressing and workman like, they win the ball back quickly after turnovers and squeeze space for 90 minutes.

Regarding the same player who tore Maguire's backline partner a new one on the pitch a few months ago? Yes very much so
No way would would Bruno say that. He may get angry about a mistake but him supposedly saying that Maguire is not fit to wear the shirt is obvious bollox.

Plus I’m certain our Portuguese Magnifico is also a Bastardo with anger issues  Search ‘Fernandes rage vs Boavista’. When he sees two of the worst defenders in the league behind a top player like himself, one captain, he probably would lose his shit quite frequently.

Let’s get him up out of here. Wonder if Ole is ever going to bench him

Yes we should consider selling Maguire, although it will never ever happen. Ed and the Glaziers would never admit that he was a bad signing, that's why they would never sell. The same can be said about the rest of our center backs.
But in all honesty, Maguire, Bailey, Lindelof, Rojo, Jones all need to be sold. Our Central Defense needs a hard reset and a complete clear-out and a do-over. But whats the point? They'd probably f*** it up even more.

I absolutely can't believe we went from a pair like Ferdinand & Vidic, to a bunch of buffoons like the current lot that we have. Unbelievable.

Genuinely believe he is one of the worst defenders i have ever seen at this club , Prunier was better than him. It is truly shocking how poor he is and the worst thing is there is absolutely no improvement in him . From here on in he will just get worse and that is a horrifying prospect for the club .

The fact anyone tries to defend him amazes me and i have wonder just how deluded a person can be to think he has been in any shape or form a good player for us

To be fair your defence can be shit and still get clean sheets.

He'll look decent once we get a coach who can organise a defence, but the money we paid for him will never stop being scandalous. His level is basically pre-crocked Phil Jones at best.

I also remain convinced that despite his poor form at present, Lindelof is a slightly better player.

Whatever about the truth of the allegation that Bruno Critisised Maguire in the dressing room at Ht it seems Rashford disagreed with him on the pitch. Rashford was demanding action be taken against Lamela and Maguire said 'they' ve checked it, its not violent conduct'.
Captain my arse!

On current form he's almost worthless so selling him would not be easy.

Like many of the players he needs a kick up the arse. He's far to casual in his defending.

It’s not about the coach organising the defence better, it’s because he has to play a different game here because we are meant to be on a front foot team and he’s required to hold a higher line and his pace and the fact he turns like a Boat is seriously hurting him. He’s been absolutely skinned so many times in the last year or so. No coaching can help that, he just needs to stay in his own box and header it clear all day to feel comfy and get the best from him, looks like he’s struggling with that at the moment too though.

His heads gone, take him out of the team for a few weeks and bring him back gradually. whether its personal issues or something else the matter needs to be dealt with now.

The knee jerk reactions on this website are hilarious. Has Maguire been horrible this year? Yes. Has our entire back line been just as bad or worse? Yes. That doesn't change the fact that Maguire is indeed our best defender. He just take the majority of the blame because of his price tag and because he wears the arm band. But you don't improve a team by getting rid of your best players and Harry Maguire is indeed better than every other defender on our team. He is an elite defender. Imagine Liverpool supporters saying "we need to sell VVD because of the 11 goals they've conceded so far this season? That's what you lot all sound like. Sorry, but I prefer to keep my best players and get rid of the lesser players, not the other way around...

Maguire's CB partners seem to have an obligation to make him look good. It should be the other way round. He's the 80m signing after all

Bingo!

Lots of posters are deluded. Knew this guy was a clown since day one. Our standards at this club have fallen off the face of the earth.

Nah, no use telling them.

3 games in and bad form is wack as an excuse.

I'm actually surprised United sold Smalling because he would definitely improve that defence.

Pretty much every pro/pundit out there have been questioning the sale considering who we have. Issue is that Ole decided last year Smalling wasn't good enough and he had better but, he doesn't have it in him to admit he was wrong, it's same as his buddy Southgate who said he'd consider him after Smalling had a better season than pretty much anyone at his disposal now, that he was even showing ability to play in a 3 with no issues on the ball but, when it came down to selection, could not bring himself to admit was/is wrong.

On the topic of selling Maguire, just reading an article now that during Martial's sending off, Rashford is questioning why Lamela wasn't also going to be sent off and Maguire is trying to tell him to just let it go and calm down, Rashford persisted and captain fantastic moron just keeps telling to let it go and VAR says it wasn't a red. No bloody pride, no fight in him, just asking us to take it up the rear. Makes sense though, Ole likes his captain to be passive, just like him on the sidelines.

If Bruno did supposedly say Maguire wasn't fit to wear the shirt, then he was bang on. Sell him next season - get Upemcano and another CB with some fight/pride.

Sadly, I can see this happening with how passive Maguire standing up for Martial. There's a video circling round in twitter that captured what the players saying during Martial red card. Maguire actually defending the ref decision to not sent off Lamela

So Maguire is believing the authorities now. That's nice to know.

I don't think we should sell him, stats wise I believe he was very good at one point, he has major errors in him.

I wouldn't mind Maguire being sold if we could spend that money on getting a better CB. Problem is, nobody is going to pay more than half of what we did for him. As a result, our board won't let him go even if he were to just sit on the bench for the rest of his career. I'm not sure how folks in accounting at United don't get the concept of sunk cost. If only our board were to accept that screw ups happen while recruiting and moved on to other targets. Imagine City being obsessed with trying to get Mangala and the dozens of flop defenders there to work out just because of the money paid for them.

He'll never be worth the money but some better coaching would probably help salvage this.
Not unless you cut him in half to loose some weight and added some boosters to make him fast. Then, you've got to find a donor for brain transplant. Because that first goal in the Tottenham game was simply bonkers.

I like Bruno more and more. He really stand by his teammates during unfair situation.

That's ridiculous. Stand up for your teammates even if they are wrong ( which in this case Martial wasn't).

What would kicking and screaming do? The way we had fallen off the rails, trying to get the team to calm down and focus on the game itself is hardly the worst advice a captain can give.

Wow, that's pretty damning, actually.

Random fan account quoting another random fan account for a supposed info on what happened in the dressing room? Seems legit.

There's a difference between telling your teammates to move on with the game after a bad call by a referee and actively defending an incorrect decision by a referee in front of your teammates.

Sounds like a right knob here. Teachers pet.

It's not "actively defending an incorrect decision", it's telling your teammate that what he's asking for has been checked by VAR - he's not actually expressed an opinion either way.

This is the time United need very strong leadership in both the captain and the coach because right now things are on the brink of totally falling apart. The dressing room situation is not looking good.
