Anyone offended by this is either scrapping for excuses to be offended or is simply too dumb to understand context.

English is not even my first language and I understand that the context is man/boy and not man/woman.
 
I stopped watching game of thrones after Robert Baratheon scolded his squire for not being able to put a “mans armour” on.

Yeah I see what you mean but then again literally anybody can use it when it’s applicable.

If somebody is being a proper wet lettuce about something, or childish about something, there isn’t a more fitting saying at times.

In some ways I’d rather be told to man up than ‘grow up’... the latter I find more insulting tbh.

I've often heard an alternative suggested to the quite frankly disgusting and dated terms, "Man Up" and "Grow Up". That alternative being, "Stand up and be counted". While their intentions seem sincere, I don't think they realise just how hurtful "Stand up and be counted" can be to a lot of people. There are many people who cannot stand up, 1.9% of the UK population use wheelchairs, and many people are innumerate.

There is a discussion here to be had on how our language is affecting people, and what we can do to be more compassionate to our fellow people whom we share this planet with. Of course, those who would rather hold back progress will always shout the loudest, as demonstrated so far in this thread.

Let's all human up, shall we?!? I think it is time to accept differences, be mindful about insensitive language and don't be so sore about everything.

Sorry to all those struggling with healing sore tissue, be it material or non-material...

It's 2020 where people get offended by anything and everything. Thus is the world we live in now.

How have the terms "Man up" and "Grow up" become disgusting regardless of the context they're used in? I am not a regular user of the English language, apart from hanging around this place, so I am sincerely curious.

I guess I may be linguistically outdated. The Norwegian counterparts "Mann deg opp!" and "Voks opp'a!" were used mockingly but sometimes also affectionately when addressing someone's childish behaviour. Is it considered sexist, ageist, both or what?

So my suggestion is that we hereby call everyone "Homo Sapien" or "Homo" for short. "Homo up" "Homo ball", etc etc. (derived from the family of large primates called Hominidae - Homo is the human branch of the family tree).

I also propose we change clubname to Sapienchester United.

People can say 'man up' all they want.

When i hear someone say it I feel embarrassed for them, because they're oblivious to what everyone is thinking.
 
This thread is a bit of a joke. I am not easily offended but there are genuine reasons why certain phrases need to be carefully used and why emotional consideration is higher up people's agenda nowadays.

Some of the people in here might not understand that but it doesn't mean they know better, it just means they're ignorant. Also, their attempt at humour would leave most grandparents embarrassed.

I think you´re totally misinterpreting that comment. It´s not men contra women, but men contra boys. He could just as well had said women´s game, as in women contra girls.
 
I remember people thought Martial was a robot when he first arrived. I think he has proved he isn't but if he did come out as one, I actually think we should let him keep playing in the league.

I did weigh up "chest", but have deemed it ok, as all 73 genders have a chest.
