Thoughts? I haven't watched anywhere near enough good movies. Scorsese seems to be highly thought of. So what should i try and get my hands on?

As datura said, with the addition of Goodfellas.

1. Raging Bull
2. Taxi Driver
3. Goodfellas
4. Casino
5. Mean Streets

Thats pretty much the best of his work. Speaking of Scorcese, has any one seen the newly released trailer for 'Shutter Island' ... Looks fecking brilliant. Although a very un-Scorcese type of film. Good to know that he's branching out from the gansgter type of movies that he's most famous for with Kundun and now this.

Goodfellas is one of the best movies I have ever seen

Yeah, mine too .. One of my all time favourites. Tommy fecking Devito ... best gangster in any movie.

Henry Hill: You're a pistol, you're really funny. You're really funny.
Tommy DeVito: What do you mean I'm funny?
Henry Hill: It's funny, you know. It's a good story, it's funny, you're a funny guy.
[laughs]
Tommy DeVito: what do you mean, you mean the way I talk? What?
Henry Hill: It's just, you know. You're just funny, it's... funny, the way you tell the story and everything.
Tommy DeVito: [it becomes quiet] Funny how? What's funny about it?
Anthony Stabile: Tommy no, You got it all wrong.
Tommy DeVito: Oh, oh, Anthony. He's a big boy, he knows what he said. What did ya say? Funny how?
Henry Hill: Jus...
Tommy DeVito: What?
Henry Hill: Just... ya know... you're funny.
Tommy DeVito: You mean, let me understand this cause, ya know maybe it's me, I'm a little fecked up maybe, but I'm funny how, I mean funny like I'm a clown, I amuse you? I make you laugh, I'm here to feckin' amuse you? What do you mean funny, funny how? How am I funny?
Henry Hill: Just... you know, how you tell the story, what?
Tommy DeVito: No, no, I don't know, you said it. How do I know? You said I'm funny. How the feck am I funny, what the feck is so funny about me? Tell me, tell me what's funny!
Henry Hill: [long pause] Get the feck out of here, Tommy!
Tommy DeVito: [everyone laughs] Ya motherfecker! I almost had him, I almost had him. Ya stuttering prick ya. Frankie, was he shaking? I wonder about you sometimes, Henry. You may fold under questioning.

I loved how in the Sopranos, Chris who was spider in goodfellas and got shot in the foot, shots some dude in the foot in the third episode and say "It happens"

Yeah , was this the episode when he goes to a store to get something to eat and doesn't like the attitude he was getting from the kid behind the desk.

Yeah gets some donuts and the guy makes him wait and Chris gets pissed off it was class, but everything about the Sopranos is so no surprises

Yeah totally agree. I'd never given Sopranos a start-to-finish watch. Used to catch random episodes on the Telly. Got myself the complete seasons on DVD and worked my way up to the end of Season 1 ... Good times.

On a side note ... I saw the actor who plays Christopher in the trailer for 'The Lovely Bones' .. Peter Jackson's new movie.

Nice, I think Michael Imperoli was one of the best actors on teh Sopranos, be interesting to see if he can branch out.

I proclaim The Departed to be a twat of a movie; overacted, underwhelming in story, unbelievable characters etc.
I think what held a lot of sway with Scorsese was the authenticity of his 1970's shot New York streets and settings in Taxi and in Mean Streets, he also used this formulae for Goodfellas with his long continuous shots.

1. Raging Bull
2. Taxi Driver
3. Goodfellas
4. Casino
5. Mean Streets

Id put those in a different order, with Goodfellas at the top.

These are the ones to watch first, his real classics. The Colour of Money is also good in a much more mainstream kind of a way. Gangs of New York tends to divide opinion but I think by-and-large if you dont mind long films it is very good, and Cape Fear is also a classic.

If you like period dramas, The Age of Innocence is not to be sniffed at.

From a technical standpoint, it is one of the most brilliant films ever made imo. If anyone watches it, don't pay any attention to the story just watch the cinematography.

1. Goodfellas
2. Mean Streets
3. The Last Temptation of Christ
4. Taxi Driver
5. Raging Bull

  9. The Age of Innocence

I think I would put them in that order. Though for me these things are always heavily influenced by the mood I am in at any given time. The gangster movies are probably inflated by my own personal fondness for them, as opposed to the real quality of the films per se, although I do objectively think Goodfellas is his real masterpiece.

Oh yes I would have Departed at the end of that list too, which I thoroughly enjoyed, perhaps because I didnt see Infernal Affairs until after Id seen it.

Yeah, i saw the trailer. I think it was before Inglourious Basterds.

Looks great. Not out until Feb 2010. Im sure it was due earlier when i last checked.

Not his best work, but still better than 90% of the crap out there.

Yep. Looks mint. And Leo looks like he has it made starring in what look like the two best movies next year - Chris Nolan's - Inception and Scorcese's - Shutter Island. Both look like serious mind fecks too.

Shutter Island looks dope as shit, don't really know what to expect from it as it seems they could go so many different ways with it, but regardless reckon it will be class.

No love for 'The King of Comedy' ?

The Color of Money is excellent. I was also quite partial to 'After Hours' too.

Anyway, Raging Bull, Taxi Driver and Goodfellas would be the 3 essentials if you had to start anywhere.

Yeah me too. A lot of people hated the Departed for this reason, I thought it was excellent, till I saw Internal Affairs. Still love Scorsese though
