Ruben Amorim - Manchester United Head Coach

Thats all good but football has changed, its not the same anymore.

Where United under Fergie would come against teams in the PL that sat back most of the time, you can play attacking but not when 70% of the PL now presses high and on the front foot.
They press us because they know a mistake is very likely. You don't see the small teams pressing the top teams.

The phrase “for some moments” is key here. Although it hasn’t stopped the media having a field day with UNITED PLAYERS DON’T TRUST THE MANAGER headlines. He’s just saying you have to be patient and stick with the plan, even in difficult periods of a game where teams get on top of you or you’re struggling to break them down. It’s really standard stuff in any sport. Keeping your head and concentrating on the process when things aren’t going well. Nothing controversial there at all. At least there shouldn’t be.
If he literally said what I quoted, it's really not standard at all . Even with the extra qualifier you mentioned. It means basically "Sometimes I have no idea why he wants to play like that, but we still need to do it". It's not a disrespectful quote, but still shows what we kind of got hints about, that the players really have some skepticism about Amorim's setups. And that was alluded to by the coach himself several times.

It’s a nothing quote. They’re being asked to play a new system and they need to stick with it even when things are going against them in matches. That’s all he said. It’s entirely normal. They’ve been used to playing in a certain way for years they’re obviously going to have wobbles about a new, different approach for “moments” in a game when things aren’t going well. Especially when confidence is low because of a run of crap results. It would be weird if they felt any different. He then goes on to stress at length why they trust in this new approach, even in adversity.

This isn’t a thing btw. The United philosophy usually means a winning philosophy.

Fergie was always happy to completely change the team and tactics if it meant winning the big games.

You haven’t changed my view. I didn’t say the philosophy has to be consistent game by game. But there should be a distinct way in which we play, which is fast and attacking. Changing tactics to win big games or certain competitions is completely fine. Which is what we did.

So it is a thing.

If there's one thing I've learned over the last few months it's this fanbase does not have the stomach for a rebuild.

We can surely rebuild without almost entering a relegation battle and putting in dire performances for months on end. United's fan base is incredibly patient if anything because little to no managers get a free pass like ours do before they're judged.

For the last few years, when fans have been talking about 'clearing out the deadwood', 'open heart surgery' or rebuilding, they actually expect that to happen within one summer I think. I think this stuff sounds great in their heads, parroting what others say like sheep, but when it comes to it, they can't hack us not being that good whilst we go through the process.

It's weird for anyone trying to use yesterday to push a narrative in either direction. We played half the game with 10 and went into a very low block which we obviously won't do next game. Equally the first goal was completely a screw up. 2nd goal easy to say "doesn't count" but Delap was close to touching and scoring it anyway.

Calling people Amorim haters when our league form has been worse it's ever been post SAF is an odd take. Blaming players for everything bad (goals) and giving credit to Amorim for everything good yesterday (including scoring scrappy set pieces and own goals) is also biased.

I'm glad we won, we looked pretty solid even with 10, and showed fight. But we played one of the 3 worst teams in the league and again struggled to score from open play. Not much new to see.
Couldn’t agree more.

Yesterday strangely suited us off the ball, let us play deep and defend that way. We know that the players can do that. Nothing really learned, but a big three points as far as safety is concerned. I was worried at half time.

There's a reason the fans sing playing football the Busby way. It was Busby that cemented the idea that United play entertaining attacking football, and apart from a few managers between him and Sir Alex we have adopted that. The Doc and Atkinson both played attacking football for example. It's absolutely the tradition of the club stretching back decades to play fast attacking football.
Again. It's a load of over romanticised nonsense. Just like the "United DNA".

The United way post 1990 has been the winning way. Fergie wasn't scared about drifting away from the club’s "ideals" if it meant winning football matches.

Even in our last season of playing anything close to what people see as the "Busby Way" back in 2007/2008, Fergie went uber defensive in the two games against Barca (Mourinho esque if you will) to get us over the line.

There isn't a blueprint of how the players should play in the academy (like there is at say Barca or Ajax). We might try and implement wider skills but I don't think we've ever had a set style, a way to win etc that was tangible like the clubs mentioned above.

You're reading it as a native English speaker though, the context of the sentence is not what you're saying.

He's basically saying they want us to do something for some reasons i.e. they have a tactical plan and the players need to follow it. I feel like you're going to the extreme of bruno saying 'I have no idea why we do some things' etc. which is very at odds with the context of the whole segment.

It doesn't feel like we've won 6 and drawn 1 of our last 10. The performances feel like about 8 losses and 2 draws.

Maybe there's something positive there though as surely we can only get better

Here's a thing. Why should we have the stomach for it? We're gonna have another ticket price hike in the summer, fans are routinely treated like shite by the club etc.

The club routinely spends 150 million + every summer but we keep being told that we need to spend more because the players signed the previous year aren't up to it.

We keep being told we need a rebuild but there's only 2 regular starters from Ten Hag's first season that played last night.

We're currently in the bottom half of the table because the new manager insists on a formation that suits hardly any of our current players but we're told there's essentially a long term plan but nobody really knows who's in charge of actually implementing that long term strategy/vision.

We've been told that there's no money for a rebuild. So a manager who can work with most of these players is needed.

Nothing before this has ever really been a proper rebuild. To rebuild something you have to break it down. Most of what we've done is paper over the cracks.

The club is taking the piss out of the fans, we shouldn't be taking the toll for the Glazers mismanagement.

I think you just stated the point, we have spent over 600m since Ten Hag came in and have wasted it and created a worse squad than he inherited.

We were also bottom half of the table when Ten Hag was sacked and he created this squad, I have faith in Amorim, their is definite room for criticism in the way we play and some tactical decisions. That being said doesn't mean he should chuck out his principles for these players, they have shown for an extended period they are clearly not good enough, there needs to be a compromise to get results.

The result last night has put the relegation story to bed, performance was bright in patches with the usual defensive mistakes, the 3 points was more important than anything, this is where we are atm.

The only proper transfer window the current Sporting board have had was the January one, no ETH influence, they loaned out multiple players deemed surplus to requirements, signed a potential in Leon and a starting LWB who looks like he can handle the physicality and perform in the PL in his short spell so far, had a wobble last night but all young players will.

Am I confident we are going to suddenly turn this around no, but I have more faith in these than I have at any other point since Sir Alex left.

7 wins, 3 draws and 2 lost in last 12 games is not a bad thing, Its just the kind of performances, We could have won few games in December too if it was not Onana's series of blunders.

I am happy that Rubin clearly knows our defenders are good with Low-Block stuff but not the same when it comes to high press which is the reason even TenHag had to go back to old ways. On top of this another issue we need to address is our midfield is not too good to quickly take the ball forward so we need to address it along with getting a proper goal scorer in summer.

When they scout our next set of players, I hope they look at the players who are good at high press. Until then no point in trying that style with our current defenders and midfield who cant cope that style.

The way Rubin sets up against Arsenal/Pool gives me a hope that he may win one of Europa or FA cups as he comes across like a Little Jose in that kind of matches.

Agreed. Previously the 'rebuilds' were basically just managers spending big money on new players. Nothing really changed behind the scenes structurally, they made up some new titles but literally nothing changed in terms of the issues from Moyes through to ETH. Now there is a bit of hope, it is also vastly more sensible to buy younger players and develop them but it also means form is hugely erratic.

He's being slick whether people recognize it or not. Sure most of it is regular sports mumbo jumbo but the two key phrases are

You could feel in moments that it's not working but for some reason the manager wants us to do that

we have a big staff and they watch so many games and prepare themselves and if they do that in the right way

Now after both those parts he says we have to listen and follow instructions etc. but you can feel the doubt coming from the captain. Doesn't sound like a guy who is fully bought in to the new system and I wouldn't be if I was him either because there is no natural role for him in the team. He's too sloppy and weak as a CM and his physical limitations and inability to beat a man make him unsuitable as the 10.

Any excuse to take a pop at the best player in our team, eh?

Best player in a team that is currently 14th in the league. What an achievement. And try to respond to the post not the poster, I put the Bruno thread on ignore so I wouldn't have to listen to the morons in that thread. So keep your circlejerk about this average player in there if you don't mind.

 Please untwist your panties. I was responding to the bit in your post about Bruno, obviously. It wasn't a personal attack. Equally obviously, Bruno has previously been the best player in a team that has finished a lot higher than 14th. Including being the best player on the pitch the last time we actually won something.

Indeed. The amount of moaning in here is quite frankly breathtaking at times. People would rather Amorim abandoned his entire ethos just to gain a couple of league positions.
It's madness. We finally have a coach who is not interested in papering over cracks which is exactly what this club needs and it's what most on here have been crying out for yet they want the man sacked before he's even had a summer.

He was not the best player on the pitch in the FA cup final, that was a teenager playing in midfield.

Playing defensive in one off games doesn't mean United don't have the tradition of attacking football, come on mate.

Keep the faith. It might not be a quick or pleasant road back, but hopefully these guys know what they are doing and we can start to turn this ship around.

I really hope we can give our older generation of fans, and Fergie, more success to celebrate.
Always have, always will....we had a few years wandering in the football wilderness* when Busby departed (including after 1974/75) until Fergie came... don't know how many years of wandering and waiting I have left!!

My old man (also a United fan) passed just as Fergie was beginning to get somewhere, he missed out on the "You never win anything with kids" era and Eric the Red, all that, in particular the 'treble'.

* Liverpool were in the ascendancy then, looks like they are making a return.... again:(

I really hope you're correct but I just don't have this optimism at the moment. The only times I've had genuine faith that we were on the right track was first under Mourinho when we seemed to have a run of beating everyone 4-0 then the period under Ten Hag when we beat City, Barca and won the League Cup.

With Amorim, I'd like to see where we're at come October. A lot of these wider issues aren't his fault but he'll ultimately lose his job if he can't imorove performances consistently.

My main concern after that is if he is sacked, will Ratcliffe go for a similar manager or are we gonna someone completely different and have another 12-18 months of everyone blaming the last guy for poor performances.

Nothing before this has ever really been a proper rebuild. To rebuild something you have to break it down. Most of what we've done is paper over the cracks.
I'm not sure.

Post Moyes, we lost the last of Fergie's core (De Gea aside really) and spent with big Van Gaal. Everyone was buzzing when we finally started spending big on the likes of Di Maria. That felt like a proper rebuild at the time.

Then there was Mourinho when the focus seemed to be on power and experience. Signing Pogba, Lukaku, Matic etc in addition to Zlatan.

Then we moved to Ole. Then we moved to Ten Hag. Again, the team is massively different from when Erik in 2022.

Ultimately the real rebuild needs to happen off the pitch. Otherwise anything on the pitch is always going papering over the cracks until the wider structure gets sorted.

But (and this is the main problem) we still need to perform well on the pitch. We need a level of short term success for many reasons and go give people time to implement that long term plan.

I keep making this point but we're seemingly getting rid of staff and increasing ticket prices to raise a few million but the team being shite and finishing in the bottom half without winning a trophy could cost us 80-100 million?
