My brother brought MY xbox up to his friends for a day. Brought it home yesterday and I reconnected it. It worked, slowly, for about an hour. Then froze completely and when I restarted it those dreaded rings appeared. It was playing with the rings but froze again, so I fecked off. Don't know if it'll even come on again, haven't checked.

Is this it for my Xbox?

Can I fix it myself?

Right I'm pissed but I'm gonna help you out here. First off I assume you mean this rrod

if so, its shagged. there's 3 options open to you from here

1) it's under 3 years old and covered by warranty. call xbox support and get it replaced/repaired (i wouldn't recommend this)

2) it's out of warranty and you need to buy a new one (i wouldn't recommend this either)

3) read your pm that i am about to send you

Yup it's that Red Ring of Death

I bought it the first day it was released here (probably 4 years ago) so I don't have a warranty.

If my brother doesn't pay for it I'll beat him red

the xbox is fecked and needs to back to MS, the warrenty has been extended to cover this problem only

how long is this extension?

im not sure to be honest mate but when it happened to me i rang customer care and they didnt ask when it had been bought or anything about the warrenty they just send out a courier to pick it up, its worth just ringing them to explain you have the rrod and see what they say, there is about a 99% chance of getting it replaced i would say

If they ask you how long you've had it, lie, say you bought it from a shop 2 years ago, and you don't have the receipt any more.

the only problem i had was trying to understand them, cnut didnt speak a lick of english

have the conversation go something like this

"hi i have a load of red lights flashing on my 360"

"red lights?"

"yes they are red, i think its dead i think its the rrod!!"

"okay you need to remove any cds in the console and the HDD before a courier is sent out"

"okay will do cheers"

"is it under warrenty btw?"

"well i got it a while ago..."

"oh im not sure if we can help you sir"

"AH BIG feck ON YOUR FACE JUST FIX MY feckING CONSOLE!!!!!"

If you bought it in GAME then you can take it to them and get a replacement. Assuming you still have the receipt or a statement from your bank showing the money going to them (if you paid by debit/credit card). But if you ring them up they should replace it aswell. Apparently for the rrod they'll fix it even if it is out of warranty, due to the number of faults. I know a couple of people who either rang them up or just took it back to the shop.
GAME are taking in the fecked ones, sending them to Microsoft and then getting the fixed ones back to give out as replacements.

tell them you want a replacement console, none of that refurbished crap or replacement parts they got going on back there

Mines got the quarter ring of doom. And they just replaced one of the parts. I would've preferred a replacement console, but feck it. Working sound for the last year, and i wasn't gonna complain cause the girl in the call centre was french and sounded while sexy.

This is going to sound crazy, but wrap it in a towel and turn it on for an hour, then turn it off, let it cool and fire it back up.

If you don't believe me, look up "towel trick" and "x box 360"

RROD is pretty much lifetime warranty here in Australia i think. Just kick up a stink say how their product was shipped faulty and your going to buy a PS3.

No it's 15 minutes. I did that yesterday and it's working ok

That won't hold long enough

When it gets fecked up again I'm gona get it sorted. I bought it 4 years ago so the receipt is gone

just phone them, you are putting off something that you are going to have to do one way or another

Got the RROD again. Second time now. Im gonna ask for a replacement and trade it in towards a PS3 if i can afford it, otherwise im just gonna sell it along with my games. Also got the blue screen of death on my laptop two days ago, i had it partitioned for a while with ubuntu on the other half but had to take that off and go completely vista due to work and not having any room on my hard drive. In the end had to do a restore to the factory settings and i lost 120GB of music and another 60 of TV/Movies then loads of work stuff (which is backed up in work anyways).
Basically feck microsoft, im going linux and sony for my technological needs. Always intended on getting rid completely but this has forced my hand. Bastards.
