Rangnick presser v Norwich (A) 12:30 GMT | goes in-depth on Phelan's role

I've said this in other threads. Pretty sure that when Ole arrived, he gave an interview saying he got Phelen in to see to the day to day running of the club so that Ole can focus on the football side of the house. This makes perfect sense. Phelen knows the club inside out. There are many things to running the club's operations beyond just training and tactics. Mundane stuff like coordinating training timing, media, logistics etc etc etc. Makes sense for Rangnick to keep Phelen for the same job.

So basically he was a glorified PA. Its no surprising since we had a manager who didn't do training and who fecked off for a holiday in the middle of a crisis. Meanwhile our players could recover in Dubai if they want to

Let’s be honest, he’s a pretty boring sounding guy, but I kinda love that. I don’t like to compare him negatively with Ole, cos it’s petty at this point, but one of the most frustrating things about these things previously was all the obvious Mike Bassett-esque cliches and the vague avoidance of discussing anything tactical, which was often played off on here as some sort of coy mind games, but can at least finally now be accepted as the basic platitudes they were…. So it is nice to have a guy who’ll ramble - however monotonously - about what he actually wants to implement for a change, and call out when the players aren’t doing it…

but that said, I can also readily see myself finding them hypnotically sleep inducing once the novelty of this level of intense competence wears off….

If anything he should probably smile a bit more.
Each to their own. I don’t know about his football credentials and he could just flop hard, but his interviews are smooth as butter to me. I could listen to him forever talk about vertical passing and control. But ultimately he will be judged only on the type of football we play and consequently the trophies we win (or not win).

Is that true? Pretty gross to be honest.

25 going on 60.

Martial is still a top talent, regardless of how terrible his attitude has been for ages now. We should be demanding 50m minimum for him.
He is on 250k per week wage, and last season he has 7 goals in 36 games. I doubt any clubs willing to pay 50m for him.

From gegenpress last week to phelanpress this week. I wonder what is going to be the next one.

RR praising match going fans. He didn’t get the memo that match going top reds are useless and internet fans are the real deal.
He didn't get that memo cause it never existed. There was only this argument that match-going fans were signing Ole songs when it was clear he was ruining us - that's it.

His new partner doesn’t look 25 either.

I never understood why this was allowed to begin with but if it is was, if I was pogba, and had any intention of staying here, the second ole is fired and Ralf is announced, I'm flying home to be here and to be around the building, around the manager and let him know I'm here to play and do well.

I think it's really wierd and childish for fans to demand phelan to leave. Was fergies assistant, is a very experienced assistant. Won three titles then. According to Ralf has had and will have little to do with the coaching. We speak about other clubs keeping ex players around enviously. Phelan is our most successful of these.

Ole: "Oh, you're injured - ohh so unlucky. Why don't you go have a massage in a nice resort in Dubai. We'll pay for it and when you're feeling fine, you can come back. See how nice we are? You're an invaluable player to us. Think of signing that contract extension while you're there, won't you?"

Rangnick: "We don't need you if you don't need us. Get your a** back here asap"
Worked with de gea. Ole was good at getting the extensions done tbf

Martial - 35m
Lingard - 10m

Come on Newcastle, you can do it.

The Arse needs a striker too -- Lacca's leaving. So hopefully there's a bidding war. But only the Barcodes can afford his salary though I am not sure what happens to them if they still get relegated ala Fulham or was it QPR?

Phelan is living proof that Ole should have refreshed his coaching team.

Maybe it completely made sense to bring him in at the beginning to add some experience but the other teams in the league improved and we didn't

Maybe Phelan was the BOM or Fergie's eyes & ears on Ole? To make sure he was on the right path?

Never understood why players go off and do their own thing when they get injured.
warm weather training.

I don’t really blame them wanting to get out of the rain, cold and snow of manchester do you?

if it’s a long term injury I don’t really see it as a big issue - but at the same time I think Rangnick is a bit suspicious that they’re taking longer than they need to.

I personally think Pogba needs to play at a very high level over the remainder of the season to convince his future employers of his worth. He will want to be back and try to get back into the team playing if he has any sense.

De Gea was in bad form and was prone to costly mistakes when he was given a costly contract. He was still capable of great saves. However, United needed to get rid especially when we had a young keeper in Henderson waiting to take over. I hardly think any other club would have offered anywhere near the salary would have been virtually impossible due to the impact of the pandemic. Had Henderson not worked out they could have easily gone on to sign another keeper.

Going forward I'm not sure De Gea due to his insistence of remaining on his line or Maguire due to his lack of pace are the right players if RR decides to play a high line in the long term. Even Ronaldo could end up moving at the end of the season.

I dont want the club to be associated with any Raiola clients anymore. This sh**bag is a poison.

He probably also wants all hands on deck, as it were - given the situation: new regime, big job ahead, even if players can't play or even train, they can still benefit from being around. Rangnick has apparently spent a fair amount of time using video examples in order to educate the team - which is something you can participate in regardless of your injury status.

You don't earn your worth based on the talent you have, you get it based on what you do with it.

Perhaps he will leave, perhaps he should leave.

But the people who want him out because he's "stealing a living" have very little knowledge about what his job actually entails - and in general no clue about how to run a huge football club.

We're at a stage where idiotic fans interpret every word out of Ralf's mouth as evidence that he "agrees" with them regarding individual players or staff members.

Obviously aimed at the Martial situation, but DAMN!! I love this

Love this, it's not aggressive or confrontational, he's basically saying if you don't see playing for United as an honour then he's not going to convince you of something you should know, and you can leave, no more soft soaping this lot, there's a difference between this and the toxic laden sarcasm and disrespect Mourinho uses, the ones with the right mentality will respond to this imo.

He wasn’t ruining us and yes it did exist. People moaning and telling match going fans from their sofa what to do instead of taking action themselves.

Of course you cannot automatically assume that he does nothing. However, the most natural response to the specific question posed to Ralf would have been "Mike actually does A, B, C and the new guy will do X, Y, Z so their roles are complementary (or Mike does D, E, F but we need 2 people to do that) etc etc " - and that would have shut the issue down. Instead we got a series of statements "he doesn't do A, but he is a part of training team, but he does not do B either". For me it is one of 3 possibilities:

A. Phelan does nothing.
B. Phelan does something, but Ralf is not sure what it is.
C. Phelan does something, Ralf knows what it is, but he would not name his duties in public - most likely for the reason that they do not correspond to his job title.

I personally think that C is probably the likeliest, but in this case the question is whether Phelan is receiving the compensation which is commensurate with his duties. Hence "stealing the living" comments, although I would not word it like that without evidence. I would still say that Ralf's comments definitely raise questions about Phelan (and I think Ralf knows it) - as said before, he could have easily shut them down. Combining it with his comments about Pogba - I am inclined to suggest that he is trying to influence the players/staff/board this way and trigger responses/changes. Like Jose did, but not Jose in a toxic way. And I think it is perfectly fine.
