Rangnick - "Apart from goalkeeping we need to improve all areas of our squad" | Muppets amass

People complaining about the keeper position not being okay... I think it is. De Gea is good.

more so than that, I think it's a bit effed up to say we need a new keeper when there's 1 starting keeper (aka singling him out) vs saying we need new recruitment in all positions

Yeah, we conceded 43 goals that season so thank feck we had Van Persie the other end and his inability to leave his line to deal with crosses into the six yard box also cost us the decider at City the year before, so tell me more.
He had a United and City player stood right in front of him, Smalling jumping under the corner and Rio not even leaving the floor. I have issues with DDG and crosses but with three CHs, you’d expect one of them to help, it was a collective feck up.

I also remember screaming at Fergie to change something. We were pedestrian and a draw would’ve been ok. Welbeck then two late subs didn’t do much.

Mourinho built the squad and then shat all over the players in it. Ralf took over a shitty squad and hasn't said a word about individuals, only what we have to improve upon. Your comparison makes no sense.
Less than half the players that played Mourinho’s last game were signed by Mourinho. Rangnick has basically said every player needs improved on. Does he need to name them individually for it to be toxic? Sounds like another manager making excuses. Did we need significantly better players to beat Burnley, Newcastle, Everton etc?

It's amazing he has to say it. But fair play to him for doing so. Problem is, with our turnover of managers, we end up with a mess regardless.

I'm sure LVG, Mourinho and Ole bought players to fit their specific requirements for positions in the team. Problem is, they all play a different type of football.

We're then left with a mess where we have players from 5 managers trying to play a new managers style of football.

That's why we need a proper "vision" for our play from a DOF. The fact our options for the managers role where Poch and EtH makes we think we still don't.

I don't think much of him as a coach but Rangnick clearly knows his stuff when it comes to organising the football department and assembling a team.

He's spot on here. I'm glad he's saying it now as well, it's imperative we get recruitment right this summer.

The difference being Rangnick is talking about players from a previous regime while Mourinho complained about the squad after he’d already spent 400 odd million “upgrading” it. He’s gone, he’s not had a top job since and he won’t have one again, get over him.
I’m over it thanks. What I’m not over is the blind love Rangnick gets for doing a shit job and mouthing off constantly about how shit we are.

This. There's a reason why Spain dropped him as fast as they did. We can never be a modern team with De Gea in goal.

One major difference between now and when other managers were hired is that the current manager is moving up to a role where they’ll have a big say in who comes and who goes.

In the past, the players were able to down tools for a manager, they’d leave and there wouldn’t be much repercussions.

I feel we’ll see some wholesale changes to the squad ending the season and the one that starts it. I predict we’ll see one of the highest amount of outgoings for a summer transfer window in all time for us. We’ll bring in some players, but it will take longer to recruit than to move on. We’ll promote from within the fill the gaps in the meantime, and I would be happy to see youth players who want to be out there rather than overpaid players who feel they’ve made it and have given up improving.

A lot of people are going to be very upset when they learn that Ralf doesn't actually have the power that they thinks he does/will have when moving to a consultancy role.

Well Ralf just threw absolutely everyone under the bus.

I dont really agree about the transfer part. Players were certainly bought to fill a role, outside of Ronaldo who was bought because he wanted to move. Players like Maguire and AWB were bought to fill spesific roles, and both players have failed to live up to expectations.

Lets see how this, if in any way, impacts the squad morale ahead of a "must-win" game aginst Liverpool.
To be fair Maguire and AWB were great fit to how we played under Ole. They did improve our defence significantly but it's painfully obvious they can't play in a high pressing defensive system and they're also useless in attack.

A glimmer of hope in an absolute shit show of a season, the powers that be facing the harsh reality.

That's a good point.

But also it's simply to do with the manager's style of play, as he alludes to in his subsequent quotes. Rangnick places less emphasis on ability on the ball from his goalkeeper than managers like Guardiola or ETH do. With a different manager, it becomes more of a problem.

Though as the greater context of the quote also alludes to, it would still be more of a problem in a sea of problems.

I have so much time for the man. His abilities as a manager nowadays may be wanting but his knowledge and willingness to speak up is needed at the club.

I really, really like Ralf. Extremely likable man who says it like it is, a breath of fresh air.

I think he'll do well in the backroom role, it's a shame he's not a very good manager.
I know he’s not managed for 10 years before his stint here, but I feel this is harsh given the situation he walked into. It’s clear the squad is a poorly composed shambles and you only have to read these quotes to understand how out of touch and ineffective our behind scenes set up and hierarchy are. I don’t think any manager could have got anymore than he has from this season. We are just not very good, and certainly not set up to succeed.

He got himself into the position with Tevez & one of our lads in front of him though, if you watch it he looks at getting around them the wrong way before realising he was miles out of position. In fact at one point this goal was actually highlighted on a course I was on looking at goalkeepers on corners. I'm not saying it wasn't a shitshow from others btw because it was but I'm pretty certain the team the previous year with VDS in goal concedes that. It was a dark one that day, really cowardly set up from Fergie and it had defeat all over it - to this day still don't understand why he set the team up like he did.

All these statements coming out from him are a bit concerning. Surely, if he has been given a prominent role, he wouldn‘t be airing this in public. Almost feels like he is pissed that they are not going to take his advice and role seriously when he moves up.

Eh so what? He still gave loads of shit to those players and the ones he signed himself. He also had that squad for nearly three years and criticised them even when they played well for him. He was blaming everyone but himself in typical Mourinho fashion. I honestly don't understand the comparison. Ralf has bluntly explained that our squad, which has been fecking awful all season, is not good enough and needs to be improved upon. A squad he had absolutely nothing to do with.

On the eve of a huge match against the league's highest goalscorers, Ralf gives an indirect confidence boost to our goalkeeper.

Why are people surprised by this?

That's some stretch.

On the flip side, if he'd have said nothing, he'd have been accused of towing the glazer line later on down the line when we see not a lot of what he's doing. Threads would sprout "what does ralf actually do' etc etc.

Want communication. We get communication. We then get concerned said communication is worrisome and want less communication.

Not sure he needed to shit on the rest of the squad to do that. We’re all thinking it of course but I’m not sure this is going to be of any benefit to the next three tough fixtures.

Who knows, maybe they will go out and prove him wrong, but there’s no suggestion that’s the case so far.

Some are going to have a shock when De Gea eventually leaves and we struggle for years to get a competent replacement. They'll be wishing we had someone as 'bad' as De Gea

De Gea has obvious limitations in his game but you are absolutely right. You could (and probably will) spend big when he leaves and get a Kepa. Better the devil you know I’d say.

I guess we actually have two GKs who are PL level in the squad, who both offer a different tactical skillset. I personally don’t think DDG would get into another top PL team because football has moved on and he can’t play in a modern manner but he’s not a ‘bad’ keeper and we also aren’t going to be able to shift him anyway.

You think Mendy, Ramsdale, Loris & Areola are better than De Gea?

I’m taking it as he toed the party line while role was manager but now that’s coming to a close and TH close (I hope so), he’s telling it as it is. Good man, everyone knows this club isn’t just a managerial change away from challenging… needs a few major things to change and work together.

Almost feels like although it doesnt feel like that at all.

He's good at stating the obvious (although I don't agree with him on the goal keeping situation).

If it's so obvious why did nobody inside the club say it the whole time Woodward was in charge? Why did Ole never say it?

Some people are just :wenger: DDG is clearly good enough to be part of a trophy winning team. I would not be surprised if some here think Ramsdale is better than him because some actually thought Henderson is better than De Gea which was very quickly proven to be a complete delusion.

I understand what you mean. Maybe he feels he has tried everything else with the outfield players and they have not responded.

Love the brutal honesty but will the club take his criticism seriously? One of those comments is aimed at those running the club. Also I'm not sure we should he announcing our desire to sign loads of players. Won't that drive prices up?

It's worrying that pointing out something obvious is so refreshing to us as fans. Ed Woodward and co really did run this club quite badly, becoming clearer by the day. Hopefully the club has finally changed direction.

Everyone obssessed with DDG, I mean, without him and Ronaldo this year we'd be 14th.

This season, yes, he's probably been our player of the year imo.

Next season and the subsequent seasons are very different though. In the simplest terms, a side like City rightly wouldn't touch De Gea with a 10ft barge-pole given the way they play and our new manager's defensive set-up is probably more similar to City's than any other team currently in the PL. It's an obvious collision course at some point, it's just a matter of when that trigger is pulled.

Honest question has De Gea won us many points this season? De Gea at his best a few years ago yeah but this season it feels like despite his heroics we've still lost the game, he's just kept the score down

RR's wrong the GK situation does need addressing, it just might not be the priority that RB, CB, DM, CM and CF is. It's probably on a par with LB, RW & LW

Solskjaer was a happy clapper who didn't have the balls to be honest for fear of upsetting people. Rangnick is simply giving an honest evaluation of the situation.
