Sam Raimi "thrilled" to be directing "action-packed" Warcraft movie

The Warcraft film has found its director, and that man is Sam Raimi who most recently directed Drag Me to Hell. Raimi will start Warcraft once Spider-Man 4 is done.

The film is referred to as just 'Warcraft' and not 'World of Warcraft', according to official press releases. So I guess that means no big screen ninja-looting, gold selling, or instance wipes?

"Warcraft" is "emblematic of the kind of branded, event films for which our studio is best known," said Warner Bros' Jeff Robinov. For now Raimi will be supervising development of the Warcraft film until his Spider-Man 4 flick is done and out the door.

"At its core, Warcraft is a fantastic, action-packed story," said Raimi. "I am thrilled to work with such a dynamite production team to bring this project to the big screen."

As good as you could have hoped for, or is Azeroth fast approaching an uncool disaster?

This could be interesting, depends on the budget

I reckon it'll be really shite. I can't think of a single movie based on a game that's been any good, apart from Board Revenge: Return of the Chequers, of course.

Also, I believe it's being told purely from an Alliance perspective, which means it'll be full of humans, dwarves and elves. Not really anything spectacularly different about that. I also don't think it's actual going to revolve around any of the decent Warcraft characters, like Illidan or Arthas, as they're too integral to the story in the games to waste on a film.

So it'll probably be like the Dungeons & Dragons movie. Taking a great game, but stripping out everything that makes it great so that all that is left is elves hitting each other with swords.

You a WoW player, Geebs?

Thought "Max Payne" was pretty good.

*runs for cover*

Frickin geekfest bull**** I can imagine the queues of muppets moaning about random crap that's been left out!

why the feck are they making it from World of warcraft. I've played it only once but theres no real storyline to WoW.

Why don't they make it from Warcraft III frozen throne or the life story of Arthas or Arthas VS Illidan. Or it could be about the elves hunting Illidan down, especially going into that strange island. Hell even Thrall could be a good story.

Resident Evil movies have been pretty entertaining.

In a funny way yes. They just have literally nothing to do with the games of the same name. So might as well have been called something else. As a stand alone, those movies have been pretty good.

why the feck are they making it from World of warcraft. They are not. It's a Warcraft film not a WoW film. I've played it only once but theres no real storyline to WoW. You've played it once and decided there is no storyline? Hmmm. There's tons of story, too much in my opinion. Just when you start it's really boring "go and kill 10 pigs, when you're finished go and kill 15 slightly bigger pigs"

Why don't they make it from Warcraft III frozen throne or the life story of Arthas I bet this is what they do. or Arthas VS Illidan. Or it could be about the elves hunting Illidan down, especially going into that strange island. Hell even Thrall could be a good story. That would be fun, kind of like Shrek but with more killing

I reckon this could be pretty godd, so long as it does not take itself too seriously (which I don't think they'll do with Raimi in charge).

Honourable mention to the Super Mario Bros. film

 Man i loved that film as a kid. The Tomb Raider films aren't that bad, and i liked the Silent Hill remake, even though it was a mash up of one and two with the man becoming a woman.

Also it is a bad thing that i'm really looking forward to seeing the Tekken movie?

Fair enough Duffy. In my opinion however i believe Quests doesn't really relate in storyline.

It's a bit like Oblivion, you have the main storyline but some of it is just completely irrelevant to the other quests.

Silent Hill? .... I thought that was horrible...

I quite enjoyed Doom though, just for that 1 scene where it goes into first person mode..

I thought they did quite a good job with Silent Hill, stuck pretty true to the original story and it had the Bean.

Doom was... interesting. I watched it in the cinema and did chuckle when it went first person.

One of the worst though is the House of the Dead film. It keeps flashing up clips from the game and it just doesn't work.

I only played Silent Hill 1, which I don't remember too well, but watching the movie made me and my friends all think... what the feck is this...

Doom, I watched this at the cinema as well (as well as Silent Hill). I don't remember it too much, but I felt the First Person view is what made it good for me.

Starcraft would have been a hell of a lot better theme IMHO. You've got some interesting heroes like Raynor and Kerrigan (Dina Meyer please )

they're making a 'prince of persia' movie also and they've already made a movie on hitman.

im waiting for a movie on gta

Tbf I kept thinking of GTA when I watched those Statham movies, Crank was it?
I cant wait for the Warcraft movie. I expect the story to show neither the Horde nor the Alliance in a bad light, but instead fight some greater evil. Maybe together to some degree.
Blizzard have an abundance of great writers, so I don't think the film will be about some story already told.
I think that I heard somewhere that it will take place a year before WoW.

It would be hilarious if it was only about Nesingwary or Stranglethorn Fishing Extravaganza or something totally random :-)

Shadow of the Colossus is apparantly in the works too. It's going to be written by the same guy who wrote the Legend of Chun Li movie.

Trouble brewing.

There has never been a great game to movie conversion. As some have already mentioned there has been a couple of passable ones like Resident Evil. But there has been countless terrible ones usually directed by the legend that is Uwe Boll.

But I assume with this budget and the director selection WoW could have a chance of really being great.

There'll be a Leeroy Jenkins joke. I guarantee it.

Thing is, I play World of Warcraft because it's the best MMO out there. I'm sure a lot of other people are the same. In terms of its lore and story, however, it's only passable. It's alright, I suppose, but there are better stories out there.

So it works as a game (because the game is good), but to translate that to the big screen you need something with a lot of depth and character, and I'm not sure the Warcraft universe really has that.

Contrast it to other fantasy universes like Tolkien's, or even modern ones (of which the best by far, in my opinion, is Warhammer Fantasy), and it so obviously falls flat.
