Manchester United 1:0 West Ham United

Post-match discussion

Sat, 22 January 2022

I think this is a good example of how stupid people have become when desperation to argue their biased views online overrides all rational thinking. Even providing visual evidence that disproves the very thing they're saying isn't enough to stop them saying it.

Exactly this. No VAR lines needed. He's clearly on.

The race of top4 this year is pretty brutal and fun. From2-7 places must fight for top4. Arsenal, Conte’s Spurs, United, Chelsea, West ham and include my lovely club Liverpool too. It’s very hard to guess top4 in this season due to a lot of changes circumstances every time , you must look match by match.

Played better.. didnt look shaky.. didnt create enough..
But then again, West Ham have been very solid this season.

Good win. No real complaints.

Dalot needs to stop with the speculative shots from distance. Does my head in.

Victory in Fergie time! Really good win against a strong team. Both teams defended well, the game was going to 0-0 and that probs would have been fair, but you need to keep playing until the final whistle and that’s what we did and we got rewarded.

It was a decent performance overall, starting to see some of the work we do in training happening on the pitch, we do lack some creativity at the moment which needs to change but it felt like a positive step today.

Hats off to Marcus, he’s had a crap season so far but it’s great to see him grab the winner, it was a simple winner but normally he wouldn’t have worked hard to get into that position so it’s good to see him rewarded for it and maybe there’s a lesson to learn there too.

Suck it all the negative nellies. Even as I thought game was ending 0-0, I was reasonably happy to have had a full game where we controlled the opposition and signs of building something over these last 3 games. Even the subs were welcome. Yes, we didn't create much which resulted in some silly choices by Telles and Dalot to shoot in desperation.

Maguire put in a solid performance from the off. No frills, just solid heading the ball away and worked well with Varane.

The goal, it was just bloody brilliant. It was just about deserved I'd say. But, was just holding my breath for confirmation.

Oh and Moyes going ape shit on the sideline at the end was something else to really enjoy
So much agree!!!
We kept a clean sheet!
We won!
Everyone contributed.

The effort was there today but the quality was not, too many times we saw Dalot and Telles either taking speculative shots or poor crosses... we need to do better when we have some of the deadliest attacking talent in Europe. Very happy with the effort shown, if we can be consistent with that and sprinkle in some quality we'll be good.

I hope this wasn't a false dawn but it was the first 90 minutes in ages where it was consistently good effort shown.

Was magic ! So happy that we got the goal. We deserved it, even in the first half !
What impressed me most was how long we actually kept the ball. The passing was the best I've seen from us in years apart from the last 15 minutes of the first half.

I think this is Bruno in a nutshell when he's alittle deeper.
One or two games you can get away with it but instinctively you can sense he doesn't exactly enjoy it.

He still looks happier than when we’ve been losing. So he either sacrifices a bit or we can keep losing games? He’s spoken himself about plying deeper as he gets older.

We did have control in a game after so long it feels like ages. But control does not mean we win games - it only guarantees that we don't lose.

Clearly the first issue RR identified for this team - ie. Controlling the game for 90 mins is being worked on. It's the first time we never looked like conceding big chances in open play.

If we can do this for 3-4 more games in a row, I will start believing that this team may still have a future!

Our attacking play was quite poor today though. Not sure if Ronaldo's approach to the #9 position is working for this group of players. We are not making the most of him, and he is not making the most of the chances he gets. For e.g., he should be busting his gut to get back onside when the ball is falling to Bruno, but he is strolling back. When the ball finds him, he just knows he is offside.

We still need to work the wide positions more effectively. As you said Dalot and Telles crossing too soon or from too deep. I’m not sure our forwards fully believe the crosses are coming either so they aren’t quite gambling to get in the box yet.

Ronaldo MoTM for me. His link up play was top class.
I take it this is a joke, Ronaldo was rubbish, he is finished at this level, and the after Wednesday the manager didn't have the guts to take him off. People say he will be gone if we don't make top 4, he will be the reason we don't make top 4.

You can see we're passing better, it's just that the passing thru the midfield is slow (get the ball, stop, think, check where the receiving player is, pass) and the defenders can all get back on defense. As they get used to the passing routes, the passes will hopefully speed up and the attackers will get the ball with more space.
And they'll hopefully stop take so many speculative long shots.
There are two issues with the midfield passing. Both Fred and McT need several touches to make a pass. This is because for CMs, they aren’t technically as good as they should be and secondly, our movement is static at times. You notice when Bruno drops in to help out, the ball moves much more quickly.

Was thinking while watching Ronaldo… The drop off from Modric, Kroos and Casemiro to this midfield is Grand Canyon size. Even his Juve midfield was so much better. We need a competent ball-mover / defensive shield so badly.

Great result which I couldn't see coming during the game. We controlled it in the main but it wasn't clicking at all up front. Something to build on.

Defence and midfield were decent although I thought Rice was outstanding again.

As he gets older, which is natural, but he's in his peak now and he wants goals and assists.

Considering how bad we’ve been at times. We’ve drawn with Chelsea, beaten Arsenal, beaten West Ham since Ole was sacked. We haven’t won all the games we should have but we are still good enough to compete with the top 4 contenders even when we’ve been poor. If we actually click I think we’d separate ourselves from the pack.

This was the first game under RR that we played with the control he has mentioned often but at the same time no real goal threat.
once Fred came off, and they went more attacking, there was a lot more threat of scoring. I would like to see a more attacking side from the start. Sometimes, a good defence can playing on the front foot and not letting the opposition have the ball. Plus, more enjoyable to watch.

He’s 27/28 surely now is when his game should be maturing. He still assisted last game and scored two against Villa from this deeper position.

I think this focus on the midfield excuses the attack of providing no creativity. Ronaldo, Elanga, and Greenwood didn't really do much. They need to do a lot more in attack than what they did. They didn't really provide many options to pass to until Martial and Rashford came on.
Yeah, I thought Greenwood have an awful game too, but I think Ronaldo movement and touches are still top class. He just needs to receive the ball closer to the penalty area. That couldn't happen because the midfield was poor

Bruno is best when he's closer to goal. I don't think we're gonna see the best of him as one of the 2 midfielders in a 4-3-3. That's another homework for the next manager. Maybe a Firmino kind of role would suit him best

Exactly my views on the match. Very impressive with how we controlled the match and defended, De Gea was a bystander for once. Only thing missing was creativity from deeper positions. That might come from a signing or just time as players master the system.

Yeah, that can't be ignored.

Rice, who happened to be their best player today (IMO), would give us that and then some. He stood out for them today.

The hug he got from Dave was better.
Unsure ... The position of Dr Rashford's searching right knee, Bruno's intense thrust, and the look sheer of ecstasy on the face of the bearded Portuguese comes across as extremely rapturous.
DDG may be a jungle cat between the sticks but I loathe to believe he could match that kind of passion.

How are people questioning the VAR decision after seeing the line?
No part of his body was offside.. not even the hand which looks over the line.. even that was behind the defender.

Its bizarre how VAR and these lines have been around for so long and people still dont understand how the camera angle changes perspective

Official image. He was onside, camera perspective just fecks with our judgement a lot.

There was one case where McT did a horrible pass (badly weighted and right into the middle of the pitch to a West Ham forward). Gave them a good chance to score. (iirc, he retrieved the ball to make up for the mistake) But generally, I don't know that they're that bad. Just that no one would show for them to pass to (your static comment).
The forwards need to pass amongst themselves.

Nice win absolutely. Played until the end to win. I think the win is deserved. The substitutes were aggressive and attacking minded. Great win.

I guess there are two options; play Bruno LW when Pogba is back and Pogba LCM. Or Bruno as false 9. But good luck keeping Ronaldo and Cavani happy with Bruno playing in their position.

I think offside rule should change a bit with VAR. I think foot positioning is far more important than body positioning. Attacking player will always lean forward and defender to set up a trap will lean in opposite direction. In my humble opinion foot positioning should be what is being looked at!

Dave gave him a big squeeze and picked him up. He was overjoyed and Marcus giggled like a schoolgirl.
