Aston Villa 2:2 Manchester United

Post-match discussion

Were well on top but didn’t make it count. That said 2-0 up with 20 to go should be enough for any team, at any level.

Our 2nd was very much against the run of play. That being said you have to then see it out.

I’m still very concerned by general decision making by the attacking players. It was better today but until they can learn to make better choices we’ll keep failing to make the most of our attacking chances.

Otherwise, while I’m supportive of Ralf he obviously has a short leash as we just aren’t seeing enough improvement. Some of the decision making today was bizarre. I get that you may like some players more than others but you can’t just not use your squad. With Pogba and McTominay out you have to bring VDB on for extra legs for 25-30mins. There is simply no point in subs at 87-88 mins.

Is it just stubbornness because he’s made it clear he doesn’t want players who don’t want to be here? Hence we haven’t seen Martial, VDB is being used sparingly, Lingard isn’t playing etc.

Pay no heed to morons who believe that Matic and Fred are vastly superior to Van De Beek, who was outstanding for a very good Ajax side.

Yeah, this is what I don’t get. We’ve seen this player reach the European cup semi final!

I think there is at argument he should be play in a more advanced role ahead of Bruno actually as Bruno is a better passer and VDB has good off the ball movement and is good at getting into the box.

We need to make the best midfield out of our odd collection of players. Keeping trying the same things isn’t working.

Midfield completely useless. They are the reason we drew. They are the reason teams walk through us and they are the reason we can't pass the ball out.
Also didn't help that the defence was AWOL for their goals, either.

Thought Maguire was supposedly the problem?

I don't see how they went AWOL, of Fred's tackle didn't unfortunately go to the opposition we would have won.

We played very for 30 minutes but then dropped off.. could be our players are not fit enough to play Rangnick’s style for the full 90 minutes or it just took Villa 30 minutes to get going.

We were the better team for 30 minutes but Villa were the better team for 60 minutes.

Rangnick should have made changes early on in the second half when it became obvious Fred / Matic had lost their legs. Don’t get why VDB isn’t played as a CDM for a few matches, got nothing to lose really.

Nah not giving Utd that get out of jail free card we should have controlled it better. I am not going to make excuses for this gutless shower

I am not wanting to make excuses, I thought we played much better today than we have in a long time. I just think Villa played well, and we do not have the midfield to compete.

Well time to invest in that midfield PROPERLY then isn't it rather than star attackers

When will the fans demand more? We need to DRIVE our scum owners out of this club. NOTHING will EVER improve until these inept, corrupt carnies bugger off.
WTF did this have to do with our owners?

Some people

They've invested in one of the most expensive sides in world football but can't make the correct decisions to benefit the football side of the business which is improving the product on the pitch and winning trophies. You think they'd want to get that part right since it would be more money in their pockets.

Maybe this summer we will see a real change with the correct manager appointed but I'm not going to hold my breath.

We are an average, 7th-10th placed team now. Our better players will leave for better clubs and we'll be stuck in this mediocrity. Gone are the days of winning leagues. We won't see that again for a very, very long time.
Funny, we've finished third and second the last two seasons with basically the same players.

So, what's changed this season?

Will give you that third place, however second place was down to scouse injury crisis and Chelsea pre Tuchel.

Quite simply everyone relaxed at 2.0 and took their foot off the pedal.

Can't do it at this level and we paid for it. The players dropped off a few % and took the win for granted and Ramsays goal fecked us.

Ragnick missed a trick in hindsight of not going 451 or 541 as soon as it went 2.0

VdB and Lingard on for Elanga and Cavani could have done the trick with Greenwood left up front for some threat.

Pissed that we fell asleep when the majority of the job was done. Not enough switched on leaders in the team. League winning teams just don't make these mistakes. We need new midfielders that can do it ALL, tackle, pass, run and shoot. Not just one or two of those.

Matic can tackle and pass - Can't run or shoot

Fred can run and tackle - Can't pass or shoot

McTominay can run, tackle and shoot - Can't pass

Pogba can run, pass and shoot - Doesn't want to tackle much

When will United invest in CDMs and CMs that can do all 4 things?

When hell freezes off by the looks of it, so fecking obvious we need a complete midfield rebuild

Pretty much.

We thought the game was over a 2-0 and then the midfield went into full blown panic mode when they scored a goal. Mentally fragile, past it, and not good enough in the middle of the park.

Simple, not good enough, peformance and result wise, we had some good periods in first half but thats about it. Our subs were late and i mean Ole late, holy shit.
Its not really surprising, Bruno back pass at the end of 1st half, kinda showed where are senior players mentally and team in general, they fighting for air, hoping to get points while doing bare minimum.

Oh and another thing, just like for JM bunch, that waited for shit show to happen under Ole, so they can come out of woodwork and have a go, you Ole sychophants can feck yourself for coming out of woodwork in these special moments just so you can big up or wash up Ole.

You can easily have a go at RR without mentioning Ole or any other past manager for that matter but now suddenly we mention words like standards, throphy topic is back on menu, really? Remember not minding losing semis vs City etc? No fecking shame.

Dominated for most of the match again by Villa again.

Midfield 2 or 3 doesn't matter, they all need to be replaced, they are a disgrace and I wouldn't be sorry to see the back of any of them.

Managed to go 2-0 up and all of a sudden everyone is bunched defending the 18 yard line against Villa. No chance of them being able to take the sting out of the game and play a bit of possession because they can't string 3 passes together without fcuking it up.

I wish we had a journalist at the press conferences who was also a fan. The club need thier feet being held to the fire.

Good for 30 minutes. Reverted to type in the second half. Very unlikeable team at the moment. Can't be arsed giving out about them anymore.

This club's done for. If we can't make top 4 in a season where neither Arsenal nor Tottenham are making a serious go of it, it's the end.

Waltzed through for both and were nowhere to be seen on the Coutinho second. As bad, if not worse, than the non existent midfield.

We are not getting top 4. I expect mixed results and close games until the end of the season.

Utter bag of shit and can’t see it improving until the midfield is finally addressed.

Shame Ole didn't get his midfielder instead of Ronaldo, might be different now.
Does anyone seriously think we can make top 4? I don't think we''ll even get close tbh! Our midfield is mid-table level at best and until that's addressed top 4 is always going to be a struggle.

It’s worse than mid table. Newcastle and Watford both bossed our midfield. Villa are below mid table and bossed us in the mid in 3 games this season. We don’t deserve 4th for neglecting such a crucial area.

Also didn't help that the defence was AWOL for their goals, either.

Thought Maguire was supposedly the problem?

Even with that though. If you look at the second goal Matic is behind the play and Fred is completely out of position so the defence is again completely open. Then the first goal Fred is behind the play again then when trying to tackle from trh wrong side passed it right into the path of ramsey

Not at all. Everton used to play better football with better results than what they had on paper. We are underperforming badly.
In terms of league position and performance in respective cups, definitely. How the F are we still in the CL btw?

It makes me feel sick and tired and emotionally not feeling good to see this every week. I can’t still escape a United game but this made me feel not happy and affect my general mood.

We can’t argue with the result. Villa absolutely did not deserve to lose. We played some really great stuff for 30 mins(Similar to the Palace game), but then we dropped the intensity and Villa upped there own.

Top 4 is a pipe dream now. We can’t keep dropping points like this and expect to get anywhere.

So sick of it all. The fecking stewards enquiry from others and myself after every game, after every season. I truly wish I could give up and walk away but anyone here knows that's not possible. Would be different loving a club with far less expectations but we are united and the expectations have to be top of the league, challenging in Europe, big transfers on most desirable players along with our enviable youth production train....not mid table, Europa league, musical chairs managers, Lindelof, Harry, fecking useless twat Fred, fecked matic, beaten docket rashford (who I'm genuinely concerned for) etc. I never seen it realistically happening but when did we become this fecking club??

That was disheartening. I thought we were past these defensive collapses since Ralf had come in. Strangely enough, with the game in hand, we are still in the race for the fourth place for Champions League.

Ralf needs to assert control over the players. He also needs to develop tactics to gain control of midfield during a match. It is frustrating to watch United losing midfield battles to the midtable teams and the teams of the lower half of the table.
