New deal for Mata

Not really bothered but given he barely played last season despite it being Covid season and most competitions allowing 5 subs, makes me wonder whether Ole intends on using him or knows how to use him.
He didn't play much last season because his mother was very sick and sadly passed away.

No young player should look up to a man that has won countless trophies at club and international level, is respected by pretty much everyone in football, and has helped found a huge charity?

I'm not sure why any ambitious youngsters should look at how Mata running his career, and make it as inspiration.

I know I wouldn't, but yeh, can't blame if others want to.

Disappointed he signed a new deal, still think he has a good bit of football left in him but not at United, obviously he wouldn't make the money he is here anywhere else and that' the reason.

What's wrong with how he's run his career?

Theres nothing to agree with. I'm stating a fact. 99% of coaches in top clubs are not players who just retired and put in. They have had to do badges over several years and gone through some sort of ladder. Not put into the first team coaching staff straight away.

People are going speculate that mata is here to be a coach it again shows united doing friend deals withour getting the best people for the job which 9/10 times won't be a player who has just retired

Well you're making a big jump from potentially being a coach to 'ohh look another friend just gifted the job, let's moan about how we're ran'. There is a lot of talk of him joining the board instead. Maybe his coaching role will be with our youth teams(a good and reasonable role with progression).

And well done on stating a fact, you just ignored the fact that these players that become coaches even for us still do their badges.

Brilliant move by club and player.

Deserved contract and got it. He is going to be great mentor for our young players.

He's a lovely bloke and all that, but his contribution on the pitch hasn't been that high for years now.
We don't even have the Europa next season to give him run outs in, so it seems a very expensive "mentor" program to me.

If he's here to mentor and such, why would we have him as a player and not just a coach..?

Mentor, coach, experience, dressing room.

With Amad, Sancho, Greenwood, Rashford and James, its hard to see where he will pick up game time.

Is it possible the club want him to transition to a coach?

Edit: apologies typed before reading very similar comments. That would make sense as he has different experiences to the others who would have all been largely influenced by SAF

There is a pretty big difference between the relationship with a player you train with and sit with every day, and your relationship with a coach who has to focus on a lot more. Plus as has been mentioned, in all likelihood he hadn't yet done his coaching badges etc, it would be unlikely he'd step straight into a first team coaching role. If he will even be a coach.

Like Bruno said, they practice free kicks after every session, he wouldn't be doing that with a coach.

Can't help but feel the same. We love to give players who don't contribute new contracts.

It's baffling. We have been doing it for year nows.

 we've literally just signed one of the best young forwards on the planet but you're upset that Mata gets to stay 1 more year?

United have made it clear they want him around.
Spending big sums don't mean you operate like an elite club. Chelsea were buying big as were city when they got money. Anyway I didn't say we are completely run funny I simply pointed out this is one of many cases of us not operating like an elite club.

It's all a cunning plan to sign Kane.

"Lolwut? You on 200K? You'll be getting that with us when you are 40.

Remember Phil Jones? He is still on our books. To find his form over 5 EPL games you have to trawl back two seasons and it reads W0-D2-L3"
It’s more cunning than the professor of cunning at Oxford University.

You have to have experienced players in the squad. The keepers are our 3rd and 4th choice, no half decent young keeper should ever accept that role. Very bizarre thing to be concerned about. Mata is younger than Ronaldo, no one would complain about his age if he was in the squad. He has a role in the squad and it's a big squad. We probably have the youngest squad in the Prem.

We know value of good professionals who can guide players. That is why I hope Matic is still at the club. Contribution on the pitch can be discussed. He hasn't legs anymore but in some games we don't need legs. Just brain. Considering wages we give to some players he is not expensive in my opinion.

I should mention that I got soft spot for him. In the top 3 of favorites in our squad.

If he's on 100k a week or so, and he's contributing next to nothing on the pitch, that strikes me as a criminal waste of money to be honest.
Being lovely isn't quite enough for that.

Scott Parker Started at Fulham, Frank lámpard started at Derby, Ryan Giggs had half a season and was booted out. As I said lower levels. Not the top clubs in the world.

Yeah but they're managers... A manager at a Championship club is clearly a bigger/better job then a coach at Man Utd.

Eh?

Giggs was interim manager for like four games.

Toxic fanbase strikes again.

Fans of all clubs have agreed and disagreed on contract renewals since the dawn of football. How is it toxic that some folk think giving a new contract to a player that's practically finished on the pitch is a poor decision.

Really don't agree with this.

City got rid of silva, kompany when they'd slowed down with age yet here we are extending a player that simply can't do it anymore.

Mata is obviously a good guy and he's been good for us but he really should've been moved on back to Spain or something. Now he's going to be paid a big wage to make 7 or 8 cup appearances.

Obviously I have no problem with those disagreeing with the renewal but its annoying seeing posters trying to say Mata is only in it for the money or not a role model for young players. Just utter nonsense.

People seem to forget he missed a large chunk of last season through the ill health of his mother.

I'd have given him at least another ten games if his head was on football, Ole will have known the man and known if he was up to playing matches.

Happy for him, think he links really well with Fernandes and as long as he's happy in his squad role that's fine by me.
This pretty much. I'm sure he would have played more games last season if his head was right. He wasn't and so was only available at the start of the season and at the end. If he showed in training when he came back that he still has it then makes sense we'd keep him, hopefully on reduced wages. Would then be maybe loans out for any youth players who won't be able to beat him out.

If it incorporates a long-term plan for him to get his badges and become a part of the coaching staff then I'm down.

Everytime he comes on in the 75th or the 80th minute in a game where were already winning comfortably, thats minutes we're misallocating. It should be given to the likes of Amad and Hannibal. This has been going on for 3~ years now.. Shocking how it's been defended by some. If it's his presence that is desired, then maybe in some other coaching capacity then ?

Some of these new contracts for players who "offer something in the changing room" are getting tedious.

Mata has been a great player for 2-3 years now. Lee Grant is held up more substitution boards than had appearances. Phil Jones is stealing a living.

How about we clean up house Ole?
