New deal for Mata

Can only assume he's going to become a coach at some point in the future. Seems like he's got a good head for it, who knows one day he might even become manager.

Whilst it is the Glazers money, it takes away from spending those wages on another player (e.g. part fund someone we need, like Varane).

I get he is a great role model and professional etc. Plus he seems a really nice guy, but we should have let him go and strenghtened elsewhere.

Oh well, now we have him, I hope he starts every League cup and the easier FA cup games and we dont still run our first XI into the ground.

you know that as a fact do you?

a director role is what's been rumoured

This is beyond stupid and next in line is probably Matic ? We need to stop being a retirement home for "past it" players and start being more ruthless. If he is good in the dressing room then just offer him a spot in the staff.

Little odd given the Sancho signing. A rare problem for sure, but having Rashford, James, Greenwood, Amad, Mata and now Sancho all competing for essentially two spots, tis a weird one.

I'm not too bothered. One year deal for a squad player and he's a great person to have around the club.
Not my money. Don't give a feck.

What is good about this is that's he's a fecking great character, a good person and a great spokeperson for Manchester United!

It would be wonderful if he could end his career with us and become a great coach for us.

Role model on and off the pitch.

Ayye agreed. Im assuming the wages will be low. Even for our negotiations team it'd be bafflingly Incompetent otherwise.

Great character and not completely useless as a squad player. I'd love to see him move straight into the backroom staff at the end of this year.

I don’t think Mata will be completing for them but rather a rotation option. One we sorry lacked last season when he was away from the team.

Supposed to be a very intelligent guy, so could be a real asset once his career ends.

In the meantime, a decent option to have on the bench and positive role model for the younger players.

Poor decision.
Player on big wages who doesn't play... no sell on value...basically crazy decision

I like mata as a person but surely he has took easy option too, thought he might want regular game time at this time.of his career

I've read the wages being reported as £175,000 per week.
So it does reduce. Last time I checked he was on £180k a week.

The fact Harry Kane is on £200k a week does my head.

I don't understand the logic here giving Mata a new one year contract, is this new contract on reduced wages or is he on the same as before? If he couldn't get any game time last season (I think it was 6 games) how are Hannibal, Amad etc going to get game time then.

I was about to say Mata ain't competing for a start really is he, it would be a surprise if he even made the match day squad most weeks in the league

Happy enough with that. He's on reduced terms, is a good pro to have around the squad and it doesn't sound like it'll affect any other business we do.

Anybody seriously whinging about this is just looking for any excuse to moan.

He won’t, but he’s a grand option when we want to rest many of the others. Can still chip in on the pitch, great in the dressing room, and we have an eye on a staff role for him. Don’t get the complaints.

neither do, seems the majority just like to be negative hardly a shocker given the rubbish posted in most threads these days

Nope. Doubled to match De Gea, I believe.

yep. he only signed it on the condition that not a single youngster would be brought through from the academy in a position that he feels he can occupy. he also demanded that no player is allowed to run faster than him on the pitch, to stop fans complaining he is too slow.

I'm not upset about the contract but I'm always disappointed we never saw the same Mata that played for Chelsea, at United. He's been here for more than double the time he was at Chelsea but I can hardly think of any outstanding games or moments (other than Juanfield).

Love Mata the guy but don't really get this one at this point. That being said it doesn't really sadden me either so hopefully he has a great impact in training and mentoring.

Reckon we've properly primed him up for a role once he hangs up his boots. And not just one of those ambassadorial roles, I think he'll be involved in running the football side of the club.

Nothing but respect for him, and as we aren't privy to what he's like behind the scenes/during training, I can only assume it's that which has earned him this extension.

Love you Juan- hugs :)

I'd like to understand the logic behind it, because I don't see it. I mean, it's not like he's being paid peanuts?

He has zero impact on our football, so I'd imagine there is some other stuff he does, I don't think know, Club ambasador?

The rumours of him being moved upstairs to a more corporate role must have been true then, as there is no way he'd receive a new contract based on his worth as a player.

Good stuff.

Good to have around? I never quite understand this argument. We have a coaching team, backroom staff, a large squad, I cannot see for the life of me why it would be good to have him around if he's not going to offer anything on the playing side. He's there as a player not some kind of morale booster.

If there is not a staff role for him to take up that he wishes to go into we should not be wasting money on people that never play or when they do play offer so little you wonder why we don't just play a youngster.

Plenty of ex-players have spoken about the importance of having those sorts of players in the squad. Even some one as hard headed and disciplined as Roy Keane has talked about the importance of older players in the squad.

I'd have a lot more respect for the guy if he did a David Silva and went to play in La Liga for a club where he'd be genuinely useful. He's stayed for the money, he can't honestly think he'll get back into the starting eleven regularly at this stage.

To me when you take the fee and wages he's been on into account he's been a flop.

If the extension is about more than football then why not give him an official role for that (ambassador or some title like that) ?

because he doesn't want to retire from the playing staff yet?

im sure he's going to be devastated he doesn't have your respect

no hugs for you

Well I'm a little surprised but i did see Utd have a role for him upstairs so it would make no sense for him to go else where for 1 year to finish playing and come back.
He seems like a nice guy and he should be good for the youngsters to have a good role model around.
Granted he'll only play in cup games but when we field mostly young players we need an experienced player to be there he'll do a job.
Hopefully he gets the send of this season he deserves as I think he would of played more last season if he didn't have family issues. Which is completely understandable.

Mata said something about being interested in the managerial side of the game a year or so back, and the club stated something about his long-term future being tied to the club. I forget the details but I'm sure there is something on the internet about it. Do a search.
