Why have I only discovered him now?

I...acquired...his greatest hits catalogue a few days ago and it is fecking amazing. I'm Going to have to...acquire...his Glasto performance this year.

Anyway the question I want to post to the Caftards is where does he rate in terms of the great songwriters and artists of the last half century? Because I have family and friends with hugely eclectic musical tastes, and I've rarely heard his name banded about by them. Are the people I associate with blinkered fools, or is he underrated at all would you say in the music world?

He's one of the greats. Living in Norway I have the impression everyone acknowledges that, but he might be bigger here than elsewhere.

Neil is definitely one of the greats. Harvest is one of the greatest albums I have ever heard.

For me he's in the top 3, but that's just my opinion.

The man is a legend.

If you haven't already heard it, try and get the "Live at Massey Hall album".

Also, his stuff with Buffalo Springfield was good, as was his time with Crosby, Stills and Nash.

As a Pearl Jam fan, I was always tempted to get mirrorball. Is it any good?

Mirrorball's definitely worth a listen yeah

Neil Young has produced some brilliant songs and great albums - but he also believes people should be exposed to 'just what he fancied doing' at the time no matter what the quality. So his body of work is uneven musically - but it's interesting for the Neil-watchers. At his best he produces great rock.

I'd never been that interested in Neil Young's biography until I found a cheap copy of 'Shakey' which was an intersting read. I'll continue dipping in and out of his music though, rather than trying to follow his career.

I'd agree with that, great live album. Also get yourself After The Goldrush, American Stars & Bars, Harvest, Harvest Moon.... actually feck it, get em all.... Neil Young is brilliant, up there with Dylan for me.

Cant be doing with his protest stuff myself or some of his experimental stuff from the 80's.... but the majority of his albums are great.

I've never given Neil a try but I'll check out mirrorball and go from there if I like it.

personally speaking Id have Neil up there at No1, but thats me.

his body of work from 65 -81 is just outstanding and I would say that every piece of work produced during this period is essential. After that, despite what he says, quality goes out the window, but then again thats partly due to my own theory that any rocknroll artist does their best stuff in their 20s and that after about age 35 they start to lose it. So that although he produced some great albums after this like freedom, ragged glory etc etc nothing hes made can touch the glory of On the beach, tonights the night, everybody knows this is nowhere etc etc

Id start with everybody knows this is nowhere and tonights the night or rust never sleeps if I were you. Mirrorball has its moments but it certainly isnt one of his truly essential works.

I was just looking at it from my own point of view being a fan of Pearl Jam.
If I like mirrorball then I will probably look into some of the stuff recommended in this thread.
