Must-watch Indian films

I think some of the cringe-worthy crap that comes out of bollywood and the over the top action movies have given a bad name to the Indian film industry, but there have been some excellent films that get much less attention in the international scene. A few relatively recent films I recommend,

Anbe Sivam
Kannathil Muthamittal
Pithamagan

The films I mentioned were released around the same time too and they must be available in Hindi too

Does anyone sing in them?...I hate films where people burst into song almost universally....The Nightmare Before Christmas is the only one that springs to mind I like

I can't help but feel the title of this thread is a complete oxymoron

The lyrics add another layer of cringeworthyness.

Ladyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy

Allreadyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy

The second they shuffle apart in mid-air, you know it's epic. I particularly like the fact that Spider-girl seems to be in a fancy dress costume but Superman seems to have made his outfit the night before with a table cloth and Crayons

Spidergirl always was the brains in their crime fighting duo though tbf

In Tamil or Hindi?

All in Tamil, Seen the movie with English subtitles...Anbe Sivam - an inspiration of Planes, Trains and Automobiles a road film between the conflict of interest between a capitalist and a communist. The second and third I havent seen but should be worth a watch compared to all other bollywood song and dance spastic dance sequences.

*sigh*

Lagaan.

Its a crap movie to be honest..For the first time in the history of bollywod white skinned actors and actresss were picked and all looked plastic in their emotions. The last ball six added a big element of feckwittery, if not for the cricketing and bollywood gimps all wanking over that crap a deserved movie like the second one(Amrutha) would've fared better in the oscars.

If you wanna watch better bollywood movies try watching Earth, Dil Chahta Hai and Taare Zameen Par.

I think I've seen Earth, is Buhvan (whatever his name is) in that one, too?

You're right about the whiteys in that one, they were stiffer than an English upper lip.

Kannathil Muthamittal is about the tigers in Lanka. Pithamagan is the story of an undertaker who tries to fit into the society.

Sounds pretty good, I liked Planes, Trains and Automobiles but I think thats down to John Hughes. I'm going to watch Anbe Sivam in about 20 minutes.

I watched Anbe Sivam because I am a great fan of Kamal Hassan. He's probably the greatest actor ever from the Indian Cinema and almost all his movies are with the best in world panorama. Few months back when I mingled with some blokes from France one a screen play writer they were well appreciative of him, but to majority in the west, Indian movies are all about Bollywood and Amitabh Bachchan, it projects our nation as poorest makers of cinema.

Some clips from his gripping movie Heyram

Dont think any of the contemporary actors from Hollywood can match him.

Yep..Dunno the name of the Hindi version that would've been released in Canada but I had watched the movie as Earth in UK directed by Deepa Mehta.

There was another south Indian movie called Kaala Paani (name of a notorious political prison in Andaman Islands) released some around 98 I think two years prior to Laagan, it was also a period movie set in pre independent India. Even those folks hired British theatre artists to act in the movie, along with massive pre historic sets constructed and some great sequences shot in the back waters of Andaman Islands that took the audience to that period. Even though the movie was a blockbuster, shamefully not being a full blooded Hindi movie, it didnt get the political backing to be projected outside our country as much as a condescending crap like Lagaan can do.

i haven't even heard of the movies dipper is naming here except for the above one.

Some recommendations if someone is genuinely interested:

Jaane bhi do Yaaron: Best Hindi comedy of all time

Hazaaro Khwaishein aisi: Story of three youngsters set against the backdrop of emergency period in India and the rise of Naxal movement.

Jaagte raho: Very old Raj kapoor movie about a thirsty homeless man who is mistaken to be a thief in an apartment complex and the chaos it causes.

Just from the top of my head..

A Wednesday
Kal Ho Naa Ho
Andaz Apna Apna (funniest movie ever, very very slapstick though!)
Hera Pheri
Hungama (hilarious)
Darr
Dil Chahta Hai
Family: Ties of Blood
Love Aaj Kal (thought it was brilliantly made and directed, though I'm sure it's the sort of movie that you'll either hate or love!)
Bheja Fry

Am sure I've got more names but just can't recall them.

Garbage

So you and I have different tastes in movies..

Apparently means I can't post my opinions on what I find 'must see'?

Nothing wrong with different tastes, but you did by and large pick absolute crap, many of which appear (to my uneducated eyes) merely reinforce the crappy Bollywood stereotype of Indian film-making

But any westerner bothers checking out your list would only laugh out of his backside. I can still find time and relax to watch some comedy movies you've suggested including Lagaan but none of them can be clubbed as must watch movies or remotely any where near the level of good cinemas.

dev d
matchis
Swades (for indians abroad)

I'll add more as I remember them.
