I am looking for artists to add to my iPod, and wanted good suggestions. I prefer rock music, from alternative to heavy. I don't mind soul and R&B but it has to be fairly fellow and mainstream for my tastes.

I have about 185 artist on the ipod now, and the following are probably my favorites:

The Who
David Bowie
Sting
Stereophonics
Genesis (early stuff)
Pink Floyd
Peter Gabriel
Dire Straits
Radiohead
Crash Test Dummies

So Caftards any suggestions for me to download.

Try:

The Arcade Fire
The Strokes
Interpol

Led Zeppelin
Deep Purple
Rolling Stones
Black Sabbath
Tom Petty
AC/DC

Obvious bands there maybe, but all good.

Have all of them already. Actually I have seen them all live

I'd imagine from your list you'd have them already but smashing pumpkins and sonic youth sound like they'd be your cup of tea.

I had a couple of smashing pumpkins CDs but they are not on my iPod. Downloading some now.

Need more suggestions. Already downloaded a couple of hundred tracks.

Gaslight Anthem

good stuff, I've only got zeitgeist at the moment because I have a terrible fear after loving one album that if I get others they will taint the first one, although siamese dream is calling me and I'll have to dive in at some point.

The cribs are another fantastic band and if you like dire straits you may like some of the Eagles stuff. There's also the manics, velvet underground, pearl jam, joy division, neil young, tom waits, i should stop now....

Creedence Clearwater Revival!

Some soft classic rock might be up your alley but I get the feeling you must have heard most of the good stuff already. Tried your hand at -

1. The Grateful Dead - Workingman's Dead / American beauty
2. CSN/CSNY - Everything
3. Neil Young - Everything
4. The Band - Music from the big pink / The Band
5. America - Get a greatest hits album if you can.
6. Nick Drake - Everything
7. Velvet Underground - Velvet Underground and Nico

Got some good shouts so far. Some I already had, some I have had but lost and some new.

Keep them coming.

Like a lot of people on here have mentioned before .. the music from Scrubs is a good place to discover new-and-slightly-below-the-radar artists and music.

Pearl Jam - 10

One of the best rock albums (if not the best) in the last two decades IMO.

Please don't let it be more than two decades old, please, oh please, oh please....

Some obvious stuff here, but I'll mention it anyway.

Pixies, Weezer, Blind Melon, Screaming Trees, Soundgarden, The Cult, Down, Eagles Of Death Metal.

i just realized you have the stereophonics as one of your favourites. How they can be on a list alongside the likes of Bowie, Radiohead, Pink Floyd....

Also anything relating to Phil Collins is a joke.

The list is what i am listening to a lot right now. I actually like Stereophonics.

There is nothing on my list relating to Phil Collins, although I do have some of his stuff on my iPod. Never listen to it but its there nevertheless.

If you havent seen it their DVD is an absolute gem.

I agree, I was lucky enough to be at one of the concerts there.

Also I'd check out some blues rock: Led Zep, Cream, Jimi Hendrix etc. than if you like it go deeper into the blues.

I said "Genesis (early stuff)", which means the pre-Collins era. 1970-75 is generally referred to as the Peter Gabriel era. Collins joined the band when Gabriel left in 1975, but they still maintained their identity until the late 70s.

Collins was more influential in the post 1980 era when they became really popular. And then by the mid-80s he went solely and very mainstream.

I did not know this, I knew peter gabriel had left first but always assumed they had been in the band at the same time. Is the early stuff very different then?

OK, I worded it incorrectly. Collins was a drummer and backing vocalist in the early seventies. It wasn't till after Gabriel left that he got involved in the writing.

There is a HUGE difference between the early stuff and the post 1980 stuff. Just compare Gabriel solo music to that of Collins and you'll see they write very different stuff.

Collins didn't really influence them too much until the late 80s, and the first couple of albums after Gabriel left were pretty good.

Ah right so I wasn't completely wide of the mark. They're not a band I've ever got into as I've always just associated them with Phil Collins and although he is a little bit of a guilty pleasure of mine I would't go out of my way to listen to his stuff so they've passed me by. Going to have to give their early stuff a go now, any album in particular to start with for a newbie?

You horrible bastard Id sell my right ball to have been at one of them gigs. Absolutely awe inspiring. I'll see them live one day thats for sure......
