I just can't get enough of him.

Especially this performance.

If there was such a thing as a underrated legend, it would be him.

Not appreciated on the level of some of the greats it seems in the mass media... which is a shame because Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles, Michael Jackson, etc to ME, don't have anything on Marvin Gaye

Agreed

Michael Jackson appealed to the masses a lot more due to him being a superior entertainer and showman, but as a musician Marvin was on a higher level IMO and just like you said the others you mentioned don't have anything on him. He and MJ were definitely the best things that came out of Motown.

I fail to see how Marvin Gaye is underrated, Hes one off the greatest artists of all time.
Whats going on is also one of the greatest albums of all time.
Mowtown has produced endless amounts of talent, but for me Stevie Wonder takes the crown.

The shame is a lot of the younger generation only seem to know Wonder as the butt of the blind mans jokes. Failing to understand he made 5 brilliant albums between 72-79 and won 26 Grammy awards. And IMO made wrote and produced the greatest album of all time in that period.

Inner City Blues (Make Me Wanna Holler), one of my favourite songs of all time.

The amount of replies to this thread so far just proves Anderson Searls point. He's very famous but I don't think he's as appreciated as he should be.

Another great performance.

You're blinder than Stevie.....

Can you please back up what you are saying? instead of just making sweeping statements based on YOUR opinion please.
Please explain how Marvin Gaye is underrated.
Anybody over 30 will have heard of Marvin and the vast majority will respect what a great singer/writer he was.

Rolling stone magazine has Whats going on as the sixth greatest album of all time. Time magazine has it as the most important album of the 70's and Gaye as the 8th most influential artist of all time.

VH-1 did a year long survey and place him 14th in the "greatest artist ever" poll, above Lennon.
I could honestly go on for ever with the level of acclaim Marvin has and will continue to receive.

So i fail to see how Mr Gaye is underrated.

This, to me, shows that he can be considered underrated. If I were to ask the vast majority of my friends (who I'd say range from 19-25 mostly) to name a Marvin Gaye song I think maybe half of them could get either "...Grapevine" or "What's Going On", with maybe four or five getting anything else. Unlike the likes of Lennon, Jackson, Presley, Cash, Charles, James Brown or even Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye doesn't seem to get half as much recognition from the younger generation as they're simply not aware of him. A lot of this is down to him dying before people my age were born (I think, early 80's was it not?), and not having the massive cultural significance of Lennon or Presley to still be relevant today.

Over 30's may be fully aware, but under 30's certainly are not. Most would know the name, very few would know the music.

Anyway, I don't really know how highly I rate him, "What's Going On" being his only album I've really listened to, but what I've heard is very, very good. Whether he's as consistant or has the longevity of other big hitters I don't know. I think this thread has inspired me to look into his back catalogue further.

Anybody got any particular recommendations?

Marvin Gaye was great and his music is timeless, he is not underrated at all though.

Infact he is always present in top 100/10 lists. And featured in magazines regulary and his music is in a ton of films / tv. He is also the subject of quite a few documentaries.

Let's Get It On is a classic album, check it out.

Also keep an eye out for the Duets he did with female singers.

Tammi Terrell died when she was only 24 years old. Collapsed into Marvins arms during a performance and was later diagnosed with a brain tumor. Her death deeply affected Marvin.

I want you - is a very good album. very sensual.
This is where i think Marvin really shines, its like foreplay. Which very few artists can really execute as well as Gaye. Maybe Pendergrass and B.White are two of a very few select that can ooze that much sexuality through music.

Another legend that I've been listening to alot for the last couple of months.

I've always fantasized about being able to sing the way he did.

I wish I had a voice like his, brilliant - really fecking brilliant.

Well said, 100% agree and re-enforces my case.

Nah, everyone knows Sexual Healing.

Get up get up get up get up
Let's make love tonight
Wake up wake up wake up wake up
'cause you do it right

There was a great documentary on BBC4 a year or two back on him, he really had a tragic life but made some great music.

I'm a bit mixed on a lot of his stuff, I'd rate Mayfield far higher as he made (in my opinion) far more great tunes and albums.

I don't really think he's underrated at all, more lesser known as the only songs a lot of people would know are I Heard It.. and Sexual Healing.

He was a great musician. I really like 'Inner City Blues (Makes Me Wanna Holler)' and 'Soon I'll Be Loving You Again' which was cleverly sampled for Jay Z's 'American Dreaming'.

Possibly one of my favourite nicknames of all time "the walrus of love".

"Take off your braissere my dear"

The walrus of love was Barry White, no?

Keep up sunshine :D
