United’s involvement in a dramatic finish to the Barclays Premier League title race — they face Chelsea at Old Trafford on Sunday in a match that could decide the championship — meant they cancelled the traditional visit to Chester races.

But manager Sir Alex Ferguson softened the blow by arranging a lunch at an Italian restaurant, the Puccini in Swinton.
The United squad, who on Wednesday beat the German side 6-1 on aggregate to earn a place in the Champions League final against Barcelona on May 28, went by coach to the trendy eaterie after
training.

Earlier, Wayne Rooney wrote on Twitter about how much he was looking forward to the get-together.
If the likes of Van der Sar and Ferdinand didn’t look full of enthusiasm, at least they weren’t as
disappointed as Michael Owen at missing out on the races at Chester.
