Manager's Press Conference: Burnley v Manchester United | Ralf Rangnick | Premier League

Creating chances
"Apart from playing together as a team in defence and improving and developing our defence work together we invested some time in our offensive principles and it showed in the game against West Ham and moreso Middlesbrough where we created numerous chances.

"I can't remember a game in the last couple of years where our team created so many chances, 30 shots on goal, 22 inside the box, in the end, it didn't lead to the result we wanted to get but we dominated the game in most parts and we did well in creating those chances."

Lingard and Cavani will be involved against Burnley
"They're both available and will both be part of the squad for tomorrow's game at Burnley. Both are top professionals, both have been training well.

"With regards to Jesse, I have a very good relationship with him, he knows I would have been willing to let him go at least until the issue with Mason came up, he mentioned some personal issues.

"We have to look forward now, there are no problems whatsoever between myself and Jesse and vice versa. I'm very happy to have him in the squad and he'll be in the squad for tomorrow's game."

Is an overhaul needed at United?
"I don't know. I don't think so. Overall, the development of the team and our performances over the last couple of weeks have improved - including the cup game. There are two points of criticism that we all have to face. Number one: we wasted too many clear-cut chances, 22 shots inside the box, 10 were massive opportunities and we should easily have been 3-0 up at HT. At the end it should have been 6-1 or 6-2.

"And the other one was 10 secs before we conceded the goal, it was a perfect counter-pressing situation inside their half, we took away time but not the ball away from them and eight seconds later we were outnumbered in our box, it was a handball goal and I'm still convinced this goal should have been disallowed, we shouldn't have allowed this situation.

"Those are the two things I fault with the team. We invested a week into the game plan into improving our game in possession of the ball, and many of those things have been confirmed by the team and were shown on the pitch against Middlesbrough."

On Varane

"I think he has arrived in the meantime, he seems to be physically fit, has no issues anymore with injuries, up until he had to be substituted he did extremely well together with Harry, he played probably his best game, knowing it was a Championship team but an ambitious Championship team.

"I'm very happy to have him for tomorrow's game, hopefully, we can have him in the same form for the upcoming games."

so are brazilians fecking stupid or just anti covid? Isnt this like the third time Telles has had it?

I think Fred and Telles were both in Belo Horizonte together over the break. They posted similar skylines so perhaps caught it together.

Nothing juicy today.
How dare he get JLingz involved. He should be punished with being forced to be on the bench in the U23 game for all the nonsense that went on in the Jan window.

Edit: And the DDG and Lindelof haters want Hendo and Maguire to start and Ralf to say it publically.

Fred only had it about 2 months ago too. How has he managed to catch it again.

FA Cup the best chance for a trophy

"Yes, of course. This is hypothetical. There are still quite a few other top clubs involved in the competition. Still 16 teams involved. But quite apart from that, of course, everybody could see how seriously we prepared the team for this game. Obviously we desperately wanted to win this game. As I said, we were not clinical enough. We didn't score enough goals. This is a game that under normal circumstances you are 3-0 up at half time and then you play down the clock. At some stage you make 3 or 4 or even 5 subs after 60 or 70 minutes, and save energy for the game against Burnley. But it didn't happen. We were not the only ones, by the way. There were quite a few other teams like Chelsea, West Ham and 2 or 3 other teams who had problems even against 3rd Division teams. So this can happen. But in the end, we didn't win. We didn't procede. This was the worst part. But it's not so much about maybe it being a chance to get silverware. We just wanted to procede to the next round. That's why everybody, including the players and the whole staff, were terribly disappointed. But now it's high time to look ahead and make the best out of the situation. We won the last 2 games in the Premier League and we will try to get 3 points at Turf Moor tomorrow against Burnley."

FA Cup the best chance for a trophy

The one thing I take issue with is this narrative that we needed to stay in the FA Cup cos it was our most realistic chance of a trophy.

The last time I checked City, Liverpool and Chelsea are all still in the FA Cup. Just like they're all still in the Champions League. With the way they keep getting lucky in the draws they're probably all going to be in the last eight of the FA Cup too.

Were any of them just going to roll over for us if we happened to meet them in the FA Cup?

If we're being honest our chances of silverware this season were already slim before last Friday night. I'm still annoyed we lost. However, our chances of winning the Champions League are only slightly worse than our chances of winning the FA Cup. I don't understand why the media, broadcast, print and social, wants us to behave like the sky has fallen in.

Those are the two things I fault with the team. We invested a week into the game plan into improving our game in possession of the ball, and many of those things have been confirmed by the team and were shown on the pitch against Middlesbrough.

Well, we completely dominated possession (as you would expect against that opponent, but yeah).

He's also right that we obviously wasted a lot of chances.

I dunno, if the point being made is that we actually played quite well on the whole - but lacked the rub of the green in this one...I'm inclined to agree with him.

He still managed to have a sly dig at Jesse there, which I like, because it means he was telling the truth about him and held him accountable.

Is an overhaul needed at United?

I mean.. he's not wrong about the Boro match. He trains these boys every day - he might have an idea of how good they really are.

Kind of encouraging to hear him say this, he has been brutally honest and straightforward so far in his tenure.

Gotta try to be positive before Burnley. We've had a lot of bad news lately, time things went our way.

Anyone heard the first question of part 2 of the presser? What an absolute joke of a journalist what kind of a question is that

Who was the moron who asked him the "question" where they just told him his team were shite at everything and that it's "quite a big problem isn't it"

He shut them down quite well but the journo just sounded completely unprofessional. Sounded more like some drunk arsenal fan on a radio phone in.
