This is a series of books I've just started to read by Steven Erikson. I'm part-way through "Gardens of the Moon" and am enjoying it so much I've bought "Deadhouse Gates" and "Memories of Ice", too.

Anyone else read it and enjoyed it? Also, once I've finished this series, I'll be looking for similar books because I've only just started really reading into the genre. I've got the first two Wheel of Time books by Robert Jordan somewhere, so I'll dig them up.

But there must be other series out there with a great epic, fantasy scope like these. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. :)

if you are looking for epic fantasy then A Song of Ice and Fire by George R. R. Martin is a sure bet

do you have to read these in order. I've bought 2 of the books but neither are the first, and a few books separate them.

It does help if you do. It's a recurring cast of characters, so you won't know who some of them are.

Buy "Gardens of the Moon". It's a good read, and the first in the series.

Cheers, i'll do that

'Wheel of time' does that to a lot of people. With each book adding 300+ new characters and not resolving plot-lines with the previous characters, you end up beig very very confused after books 3. :rolleyes:Stick with it somehow, its a rewarding experience once you are done.
I'm currently on Book 11.

regarding Wheel of Time then the you could read the first 5 and then skip right on to 10 and 11.. books 6-9 should have been edited down into a single volume!

Book 11 in Wheel of Time was a vast improvement on the dreck in 6-10. 10 was especially dire.

Malazan Book of the Fallen is not bad - the author plays coy with a lot of things though, not explaining a great deal, so it gets quite confusing sometimes. I liked Deadhouse Gates - apparently they're making the Chain of Dogs sequence into a movie, and not bothering with the rest of it. As well they should. Deadhouse Gates would have been a fantastic book if the author cut out everything but the Chain of Dogs.

A Song of Ice and Fire is the best fantasy series in the last 15 years, easily. The only problem is that the author might die before he actually finishes the series. He'll be in his 80s by the time he's done (and I'll be in my 40s).

I'd recommend anything by David Gemmel, Raymond E. Feist and David Eddings

Finished with Robert Jordan's 'Knife of Dreams' - Book 11 of Wheel of Time. Damn, its taken me so long to finish all eleven. He introduced so many new characters in the last two books and has left so many plots unresolved. Extremely frustrating. I don't see how he's going to wind it all up in 'A memory of light'. He's going to have to kill of a whole load of characters to make it work. Sigh.

To read next :

1. Ray Bradbury's- One more for the Road
2. William Gibson - Neuromancer
3. And finally GRRM - A game of thrones.

He's also over weight and not looking to go on a diet, I went to a book signing, he said he loves his food and if he dies before he finishes the series we're fecked.

Jordan died yesterday

He needs to finish A Dance of Dragons pronto. It's been going for fecking yonks and he already passed the halfway mark 2 years ago. Then he can post who Jon Snow's parents are on his blog and I'll be satisfied. He can then go and eat himself to death if he wants.

Bollocks.

RIP Jordan, shame we'll never know the last scene which he had kept inside his head for 25 years... :(

He's been preparing for death for the past few weeks, he's been dictating copious notes to his wife and cousin, you'll get something approaching his vision in the final book.

Just finished Deadhouse Gates (yes, I'm a very slow reader). I really enjoyed it, particularly the Icarium and Mappo storyline. The Chain of Dogs part was good.

But Coltaine :( :( :(

Oh well, at least I still have Anomander.

If you want to read an epic series I suggest the Dark Tower books by Stephen King. (7 books in total)

Thats where the name Randall Flagg come from in fact. Although he does appear in one or 2 other Kings books as well.

Good recommendation on Dark Tower .. definitely one of my favourites. I'm thinking of picking up on Malazan once I'm done with AsoIaF - which is without a shadow of a doubt the greatest fantasy series of our times. Its just that good !!
