Pele was from a different era just like Maradona is to Messi. Players didn't go abroad as much and top players stayed at one most of their career. There were foreign players in big name sides like Inter and Madrid had few Argentinians and European exports but not like today where most teams in the top divisions have several squad members from all over the world. The 50s and 60s definitely weren't bad eras for football at all and as that blog post said other great Brazilians were in some of the tournaments at the time and Pele matched up against them and not just weak regional sides. He also did the business in some competitive friendlies against Benfica and AC Milan were he wiped the floor with Benfica in similar fashion to George Best. Pele retired from competitive football apart from a spell in America in 1970. I think he might not have suited the seventies or eighties as football was negative and hard during those decades, Maradona did it against some of the best defences during that period. I think Pele would be class if he played now while there are less characters like Maradona in the game now. He'd fail all the drug tests.

Messi's been a bit ropey lately as well. I think that "If he scores so many more goals and you top fat Ronaldo's long standing record at Barca has gone to his head and he's stopped passing to other players". He's probably not as good as Rivaldo or Zidane let alone Maradona, better than CRonaldo though.

I think Messi is better than Rivaldo or Zidane, and yes I agree with you, he has become more selfish lately, going for the shot, he needs to just play his natural game because that's how he got these 40 goals in the first place.

When he has Zidane's record then get back to me....remember the team he's playing for, and has only ever played for. Zidane was the fulcrum in 2 club sides in 2 major leagues and his international side for 10 years. Messi has just been the fulcrum in a seriously great club side for 3.

I really wish people would stop being so knee jerk. He's incredibly good, and has the potential, but he isn't better than anyone in the top tiers yet. Give him time. Ronaldo was the potential greatest of all time when he was Messi's age. Things can happen. The World Cup is the true test.

Fair enough but I think it's inevitable I will get back to you.

If he retires tomorrow, or goes on the wane like Ronaldinho did, then he wouldn't be classed as better than either of those two. The potential's there obviously.

Thank you for putting things back into perspective.

He's actually human:eek:

He still has a bit to go before being the best ever, such as dominating games like this where teams specifically put out a game plan to stop him from playing, becaue Inter for the majority succeeded.

As the more sensible have been saying, the Messi hype had gotten ahead of the player.

He has the potential to be a magnifcent all-time great in the future, but he's a ways off that at the moment.

All the spastic comparisons to Maradona, Ronaldo and the like can calm down a bit... at least until the World Cup...

Doesn't have the personality or all round game. Simple.

:lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:

Says the one who constantly asserts that Messi is greater than Maradonna, Zidane was nothing compared to him and fat Ronaldo also.

Better than Zidane apparently. . .

:lol:I was joking about Maradona but I maintain at 22 he could be better when it's all said and done, and I was dead serious about comparing him to Zidane and Chubster Ronnie.

It's quite simple, and I've said it before.

Even Ronaldinho had a certain variety to his game which meant he was very difficult to stop compeletely.

Messi, like a commentator said, you know what he's going to do. The question is can you stop him? Over the two legs, Inter's players showed us they could.

As is the case with ronaldo, messi has a long long way to go to match zidane.

If Rooney had been given the same role Messi had been given in todays game.. Barca would've won.

I've said it time and time again.. Messi and Skinny Ronaldo have a long way to go yet.

Tight games where its defence vs attack, Ronaldo > Messi
Open games where theres a bit more space, Messi > Ronaldo.

Ay, because Zidane never had poor games

Even in a quieter Messi performance he laid a sitter on a plate to Bojan

Sometimes even the best need others to step up on a given day

I've seen Zidane step up on the biggest stage. Messi hasn't. Unless you count a quarters against a reserve Arsenal side that is.

Didn't look like he gave a shit tonight.

Looked more like someone still learning his trade and how to unlock stubborn, negative gameplans from good defenders and defenses.

There's certainly a pattern emerging. He'll face a lot more of this at the World Cup.

Tonight's game showed why he is not near Maradona. With his supply cut he starved to death.
Maradona in comparison was the supply and executor rolled into one. It's high time folks respected him more.

He had all the supply, Barca had all the possesion, he just kept choosing to lay it off most of the time.
