Lionel Messi

His control and change of direction at top speed is fantasy football and he finishes with the composure of a great center forward, even though technically I'm not sure his position has a name.

Without qustion, the Barca team provide Messi with the fundamentals to do what he does and he constantly acknowleges it, without them he wuldn't be the same lad. It's time Maradona decided how to give Messi a similar platform for Argentina because the national side is not short of cracking players themselves.
TBF The last time Argentina did that they were raped. Till Maradona lives, typical old school Serie A football will be their style.

On club level I think he is already one of the best player ever out there. He just need to dominate a WC like Maradona or Pele did to be remembered as the greatest player ever.

He won't. Argentina will crash out in the last 16 and Messi will go home with his tail between his legs. :smirk:

He's quite simply the best footballer out there by some distance at the moment. It was ridiculous how he went past Eboue for the 4th, and to finish like that...well, wow.

I'd probably sacrifice my own family to see him in this team if I'm being brutally honest. There's no denying that we are witnessing potentially the best footballer of all time.

In my defence, I wouldn't go as far as to give my left testicle to see him play here unlike others I've seen post in this thread. I mean, that's just absolutely ridiculous.

Eboue is such a great defender it was amazing to see him beaten so easily.

Also it was a great piece of goalkeeping by Almunia to push the ball right back into Messi's path. It's almost as if Arsenal are doing it on purpose.

Silvestre passes the ball to Messi, Almunia thought he'd do likewise.

Right.

Top Red !!!!

:D

I was expecting something more along the lines of "OMFG, FaNBoi!"! :D

I would also strongly considering losing my left testicle if he could sign for united. Just unstoppable, his close control, appreciation of space, movement, acceleration and composed finishing is in a league of his own. I used to think ronaldo was better, but now messi has become a deadly finisher he is by far the best. Just wow. He should win wpoty imo.

Sad. You witness greatness, and can't enjoy it.

how can Rooney respond to this challenge??? I mean, what does Rooney have to do now to over take Messi? Score 4 in the Semi (if we get there) and 4 in the final, and single handedly win us the next five league game to win us the title, and maybe lead England to the World cup?? Would that be enough???

What challenge? Has Messi challenged him to a duel? It's not a game about individuals. Let's see if United can get through.

 Sweet christmas Cal.

Sorry.

I just dislike the way the game is made out to be about individuals, and especially don't want to start comparing Rooney against Messi. It's kind of an unfair comparison, I think.

Yeah but even though Messi is considered a phenomenon right now, last month there was debate about whether Rooney was the best in the world. I mean things change so fast in football. Could Rooney do anything to flip the public opinion back in his favor now, or has the debate been put to rest after last night???

havent read what all the discussion is about the last 152 pages, but...

On a weekly basis, Messi is demonstrating his agility, his pace, his technique, his creativity, the power and timing of his shots, his almost impossible ability to control the ball while reading the game and spotting the movement of teammates and oppponents.

Taken into account that the pace and physical challenge of today's football is incomparable to 20 (maradona) or 35 (pele) years ago, you would have to conclude that Messi is simply the best player ever.

This guy is special... the speed, ability, the technique... hope he keeps himself injury free...

He is now on 39 goals in 42 games. One goal more than last season in eight less games.

On current form, he is on course to match Ronaldo's epic 47 from 49.

So much bitterness.It's not healthy

The pace is quicker but the physical challenges and specially tackles were more dangerous and reckless back then

last night confirmed Messi's membership of an exclusive club which has Pele, Best, Crueff and Maradona as members.

he is a joy to behold, his brilliance on the pitch is simply breathtaking.

To be fair he was billiant but Arsenal are suited for him. A team of fairies. It's the hormone treatment he had growing up! He's superhuman...

Still he should come to England to play for Manchester United...just so that we can confirm it :)

I thought the commentators went overboard last night. Messi is a fantastic player but I don't think the performance merited the ejaculations of praise heaped on him last night.

His first goal was him lashing a fortuitous rebound from a blocked pass into the corner.
His second goal was an unmarked run onto a pass in the penalty area which most players should score.
His third goal was undeniably class.
His fourth goal was from another lucky rebound which dropped at his feet.

The way the commentators were speaking, you would have thought he had scored 4 wonder goals and completely dominated the game. I thought it was a fantastic team display and Messi played well and took advantage of some lucky breaks. I am sure he has played far better and only scored 1.

His forth goal was not luck, look how he skipped past Eboue and shielded the ball from Vermalen to get a shot away, he has so much talent to shield the ball that he manages to get two shots away with all the players around them leaving them flapping on their arse. Nothing about the man is luck, it's all calculated genius and he deserves every praise he gets.

About the 4th, the way he got in that shooting position was great.Dribbling past Eboue an,d Vermaelen with ease

Boss, I am sure it wasn't calculated genius to miss the first shot but score the second one. He deserves praise for being a fantastically gifted player but you're falling into the trap of over praising him and thinking everything he does is wonderful. I think he is the best player out there at the moment and he has potential to rub shoulders with the greats, but people are getting far too excited at the moment.

Fair enough, but 9 times out of 10 the keeper wouldn't have offered him a 2nd bite of the cherry and we would be speaking about a great chance gone begging. Threfore he was quite fortunate.
