Lionel Messi

There'd still be people like you, Raoul etc. comparing him to Maradona and people would almost seem insulted to read the comparison, and people would still be saying things like Messi was embarrassing tonight.

Might be toned down a bit but there'd still be a stupid amount of massive exaggerations on both sides.

Nah it would be toned down alot, he's a cnut who instigates most of the hate in these threads.

You should realise that you are overly biased though.

And even if you won't agree to that, you should realise that this is how you come across to 95% on here and that the net effect is that your contributions too often polarise the debate because you come off as a radical messianist/anti-ronaldist.

You have some good things to say, but it would help with the circularity of the ronaldo-messi debates if you moderated your input somewhat.

I think that's pretty much it. Messi's fans can't seem to accept that, Messi can be considered a great player without having to be better than Maradonna. So they go overboard with their comments, hailing Messi as the messiah. This alienates the Messi haters/Ronaldo fans and as you said it insults neutrals to read some of the ridiculous comments regarding Messi and Maradonna.

Or ceased input altogether.

Agreed, a Wum is not hard to spot, not at all.

If he wasn't here you'd be known as Messi fanboy numero uno...

Noted.

It's wierd. I get blamed for everything from starting arguments to being the sole reason there is an anti/pro Ronaldo or an anti/pro Messi camp or debate. I only try and give an honest opinion but i'm somewhat transparent. My natural disliking for Ronaldo is clear even though i can't deny his brilliance as a footballer.

The fact i think Messi is the best in the world seems to upset people. I can deal with people having a fettish for all things Ronaldo and i can even deal with them thinking the Portuguese is the best in the world. I simply find them clueless.

If people hate me for it then so be it. It's a football forum not a prison, i'm not in fear of saying the wrong things then dropping the soap in the shower. And i'm not in fear of being banned for having an opinion. This website isn't like that. Unless your opinion is racist or genuinely offensive it's pretty much free speach on footballing matters.

Oh, it's not that. Plenty of us regard Messi the best in the world, myself included.

It's the digs at Ronaldo that irk people and give you a worse reputation than you would if you just abstained from discussing him at all.

With Ronaldo, you seem to take it quite personally, for whatever reason.

My thoughts exactly.

Was he even playing ? Apart from a well saved shot by Almunia in the first half what else did he do ?

Took up good positions (his deep run drew vermaelen away from zlatan for their 2nd), kept possession with generally positive and forward passing.

All the basics you want from a player in a good team performance. Nothing much exceptional beyond that.

I simply find them clueless.

And you wonder why you're portrayed as the main instigator...

Stop playing the victim FV, you've made the same old speech over and over again...

I've no idea why people think you're a cnut, it seems the word's lost all meaning if I'm honest, and you seem like a decent lad but it doesn't take a genius to see why people get wound up by you.

Either you don't care about whether people like you and you can continue to make controversial statements, or you do care and you'd rather people did like you - which would mean you'd need to tone it down a bit.

You can't have both. You can't call plenty of people clueless and not expect to get plenty of abuse. You can't complain about being criticised for overrating one player when you do the exact same thing to others.

You have to expect more if not a lot more from such a talented player. What you described is the basic of football

I maybe, who knows but I wouldn't be calling other players shit just to praise him, or criticising them for no reason or giving them impossible criteria. I don't consider myself a pompous cnut like FV who loves to start arguments.

Yes, you're obviously an angel.

cnut, cnut, cnut.

It would only alienate a clueless person.

There you go again.

Well said, pretty much sums it up.

Hehe I wonder if this thread will keep going until Messi retires or the Caf closes down?

Did you only watch 30-second highlights of the match? He was excellent in the first-half, frequently carrying the ball forward in dangerous areas while making light work of any challenges from Arsenal defenders. On top of that his control and interplay was sharp and incisive. An important cog in a great team performance.

I watched the entire match. He was "excellent" ? You gotta be kidding me.He was ok but excellent is a fecking stretch

I dont think it warrents the abuse. To disagree with someone opinion is one thing but to have take a personal dislike is quite a drastic difference. I could disagree with anyone yet it doesnt mean i will automatically think they are a cnut or whatever.

I rate a lot of posters on the forum, you included and i can tone it down but it wont change opinions. You'll see that for yourself. THe next time Messi or Ronaldo does something good or bad you'll find it wont be me the first to jump in, just like it hasnt been me many times before.

There you go again.

Choose not to take it so seriously. That was actually a joke.

I wouldn't exactly say the basic of football. It's very hard to do at the highest level at that pace and when everyone does it you have a great team performance in the making. I'll even go as far as saying Rooney in large parts made a living of doing this really well when he was 'doing ronaldo's donkey work' the previous two seasons.

I did comment to my brother that we hadn't seen much spectacular from messi in game. His response: 'who needs it. barca are awesome.'

It isn''t the kind of game he'll be remembered for. But he had a job to do which he performed. Certainly not the kind of game that should inspire ratings of poor or 'not the bpitw after all'.

Tbh, I like watching Ronaldinho on song more than messi. But I'll give messi some credit from this game. He wasn't inspiring, but still did what he had to do. Whereas when goofy isn't inspiring he is too often detrimental to the team with ballhugging and overambitious passing. Messi put in a good team performance.

Agreed, he kept it moving, kept possession, did he even lose the ball once?

I agree with Gio, in the first 25 mins especially he caused all sorts of problems. He spread the play and drifted past the midfield. If hed scored one of his 2 good chances it would have been better remembered.

What he described is basically what Barcelona are renowned for. They may be simple skills, but doing them well at the highest level like the Barcelona players do and at some of the tempo and ball retention on show today was brilliant to watch.

Messi was excellent in the first half and faded in the second.

I agree entirely with you except that I expected a bit more from him and at the end of the day I was a bit disappointed. He wasn't doing the crazy stuff he regularly does in Spain is my main point

You don't think they're a cnut you just think they're clueless.

I'd imagine it contributes to people not liking you.

It's not about the first to jump in it's when you jump in you cause a tidal wave instead of a small splash. Whether that's because you like the attention, you like winding people up or you're really that oblivious to the reaction you cause I'm not sure...but it's a big reason for why you're vilified. The other big reason is because this is a United forum and people don't want to let go of Ronaldo, but still.

Agreed considering the hype around the little troll you always expect a bit more from him in the big CL matches. Didn't see this match though, basing it on others I have seen.
