Missed the match, did Messi go MIA against a English team as usual?

No. Not one Barca player did, the first 69 mins was a masterclass with every player caressing the ball around. If nobody had heard of him they'd all be raving about him. He just didn't take on 4 men and blast it in the top corner, what a shitter.

Aye - a bit of perspective is all that's needed here. It's embarrassing how much knee-jerk behaviour there is in both this and the Ibrahimovic thread. It was a superb hour or so of football from Barcelona.

Sorry but cannot be compared to Pele/Garrincha and Maradonna yet. Arsenal were there for the taking.

Messi turned up for 20 mins in the first half then wasnt anywhere to be seen. He's not been his usual self in the past 2 weeks. Someone could say he is in desperate need of a rest.

What a strange comment, considering he showed the best form of his life during 14/3 to 21/3 with those 8 goals in 3 games.

Now suddenly he is in desperate need of rest?

If nobody had heard of him they'd have been raving about Xavi, Maxwell and Ibra more tonight.

Err... when he is the current world footballer of the year, people judge him on those standards.

know your football people, ffs.

It's tedious to see how every argument has to be extreme. Messi wasn't outstanding, but he did his part in a fantastic team performance. Played the percentages and mostly made good passes without standing as exceptional.

That's a good game, albeit not one that will add to the lore of Messi:BPITWEva. I cannot abide people who can't see past the youtube assesments of a player.

Well if you had watched him in the weeks following his singlehanded match winning form you would agree. He has been moved to the middle and looked tired. He was rested at the weekend but forced to come on for Iniesta so didnt really get much time off.

Guardiola understands he needs rested but is afraid to rest him. Like if Rooney looked like he really needed a rest i'm sure SAF would have a hard time doing it.

I dont expect you to understand any of this clearly.

I did actually watch the past few games.

Of course what I saw as him struggling (relative to his normal position) in the centre you saw as him needing rest.

Well evidently that was just me apparently. However as you can see this takes it to a whole new level.

It is double standards but i expect no less.

You really are in no position to talk about "double standards". Messi's undoubtedly the best player in the world and one off par performance won't change that but had the shoe been on Ronaldo's foot, you'd have been the first one to make the same sort of stupid comment.

what comment exactly? that he didnt play that great? i would indeed, that one performance makes him shit or overrated? not really.

My only real point is that he looks tired, i see that as one of the reason he played through the middle so much and has done in the last few games. It limits his running and if anyone could tell he didnt do much of it tonight.

Messi chose to play it safe like he did in Rome which is a shame because we know what he's capable of. Everytime he received the ball he passed it like a hot potato, maybe he was more concerned with getting on he end of something, which is reason he played it outwide so many times. Who knows, but don't write him off in the Camp Nou.

The Ronaldo fanbois on here are an embarrassment to this website (and very indirectly, to the club)

Have a word with yourselves, seriously.
I don't think most are Ronaldo fan bois (because he did act like a complete prick towards the end of his tenure here and continues to be petulant even after getting his "dream move") but the reason people stick up for him (for me anyway), is because of people on the opposite end of the scale like FV. Whether people like it or not, he became the best in the world at United, and that's why you get people sticking up for him. Make no mistake; I think he's a complete cnut.

Who cares, really? I find the whole thing silly. I don't give a crap about Ronaldo anymore but the Messi hype annoys me. Just look at the size of this thread!

the Messi hype annoys me

Why? He lives up the hype, he's that good a player

He played very well tonight, Barca gave a masterclass for the most part, bizarre that someone would be of the motivation to come on here after a game like that and savage a performance from one of their best players! Alas this site has more than its fair quotient of muppets

And the reason this thread goes on and on is because of comments like 'Messi was a disgrace'.

It's not a one man show here, take FV away and you'd still have a crazy amount of ridiculous comments criticising Messi and bigging up Ronaldo.

FV causes a lot of stupid arguments that's for sure but there's a bunch of United fans on here (I'm not including you in that bunch, by the way) who seem to care more (and post considerably more) about whether or not someone from Real Madrid is better than someone from Barca, than they do about anything else.

It makes me cringe, it really does.

doubt it, take that pompous git away some sanity would be restored

He is a fantastic player no doubt. Just tired of having that shoved up my throat everytime he or his team play well against Osasuna. You have lived here in Sweden, you know all about the whole Barca/Zlatan hysteria...

Ahhh fair enough. I tend to not get into Messi/Ronaldo debates but once in a while I'd stick up for a former United player if I think unfair/extremely stupid comments are being made about him.

I really find it staggering that you get people who love Ronaldo as much as Cal? does though, I mean how can anyone act like that after the contempt Ronaldo showed for us on more than a few occasions?!

I doubt Cal loves him. Cal loves to argument though and tends to stick to his opinion no matter what.

There'd still be people like you, Raoul etc. comparing him to Maradona and people would almost seem insulted to read the comparison, and people would still be saying things like Messi was embarrassing tonight.

Might be toned down a bit but there'd still be a stupid amount of massive exaggerations on both sides.

He did little wrong today.

It wasn't anything special by his standards, but he was playing a team game, quickly releasing the ball to keep the domination going. My own selfishness wanted to see Messi run at Arsenal some more but Barca had a game plan away from home and it wasn't really needed. No doubt you would see the real Lionel at the Camp Nou when the space is opened up.

Messi is without a doubt the best player in the world IMO. I was just disappointed with his performance tonight, because if he'd turned up he'd have buried Arsenal.

Sorry for the bump though. Should have put it in the other thread to keep the spastics at bay.
