Laptops eh?

Looks a good price to me.

There was a 17" HP laptop knocking about a couple of months back when i was looking for a laptop. Forgot the model number, but it had a blu-ray player and was around £400. Would have got it if it had been a 15".

What are you wanting the do with your laptop?
As long as you don't want to be doing any gaming or anything extremely demanding, you should be able to get plenty of laptops under £400 which will be perfectly adequate.

I got a Samsung R510 in the end.

No. Im very pleased with it. It runs fine and is a perfectly decent laptop.

The only issue i've had is the rubber feet on the bottom falling off, but that is minor.

It's a decent laptop rufus, but Vista will really drain it. I suggest throwing XP on it straight away, or the Windows 7 RC.

Nah not looking for gaming, any decent one's you'd recommend for using the internet, downloading etc. maybe run a few apps at the same time without it slowing up?

Is Vista worth getting? can i get a laptop that will be able to handle it for under £400?

Right well if you don't want gaming may i suggest the Samsung r510. Its what i have, and is more than adequate for everything but gaming. Runs vista perfectly fine also.

I originally saw it on ebuyer but i think i ended up getting from some site called Samsung laptops of something. I'll dig out some links in a min.

feck no, Vista is a horrific pile of testicle juice. The problem is that 95% of laptops these days come with it!

After running it for the last couple of months i found that as long as you have enough RAM (above 3GB) and turn off the automatic update, it's fine.

Cheers mate, I'll have a look at it. Is the screen good quality? I suppose I'll use it to watch DVD's on it so a quality screen would be a bonus.

I've had an Acer and it wasn't the best of machines. I'd say they're average - you can do better, but you can also do a lot worse.

A friend of mine had an Acer and he doesn't speak favourably of it, something about 'one day it just didn't turn on' etc.

I know plenty of people, including myself, that have had Acer laptops. I don't know anybody who's had an Acer laptop without it falling to bits within 12-18 months. Common problems include: Screen falling to pieces, battery failure, electrical chord failure, screen failure, mousepad issues and keyboard issues. They're basically shit from my experience.
