Gaming Gran Turismo 5

You are not going to get a Burnout style wreck, however, in GT mode, I think that it's called GT Life now, the cars will suffer mechanical damage each time you bump into something to the point that it might not be able to steer straight or you can't change gear, etc.

Forza does all that, but hopefully gt5 refines it a bit more.

On the physics side, has anything technical been said at all, especially in relation to matching forza? Any videos showing tyre deformation or stuff like that?

Holy shit, since my early days watching porn in the mid 90's that my browser didn't took so long to load a picture.

Meh, what do you expect with old technology dressed up as new? As I said way back when, this is the first time I can remember the new consoles coming out and not even matching mid-high end PCs!

The Cell could easily compete with a mid-high end PC CPU at the time, even now on certain jobs it'll run rings round an i7. Typically, you are thinking GPU bound only.

They need to do something serious with the next Xbox, but knowing them it'll just be a few xenons bolted together ;)

I thought that it was widely accepted than the PPE on Cell and the three cores on Xenon were pretty crap? Power 7 cores maybe? We have no clue as to what IBM are going to do with the Cell since they scrapped the 4 PPE 32 SPE version. Sony will probably bolt two of the BEs together.

When it gets down to the 22nm node it probably will not need any cooling either, cheap to make, and end up in every CE black box you can imagine. Why bother with all of those bespoke DSPs and god knows what else when all you need is a single programmable chip and some RAM, a chip that alread runs Linux and most probably Android in the very near future. The poor PS3 has been a testbed for all sorts of imaginary possibilities and products.

What's the torque on your car, Lambs? 300? I reckon I got a speeding ticket racing a WRX. They're shite on the motorway at high speeds. Haven't got the legs at all.

The BHP from standard is 286 and the torques are a bit lower I believe, although actual puts it at closer to BHP than the estimated. Put it this way, even going up a sharp hill she pins you to your seat :D

Yeah, Scoobies and Evos haven't got much about them until you get to the top end ones, but then they are driven by twats who without the AWD systems and traction control would kill themselves. The only thing that I've come up against that has bested me so far is a decent skyline, but even then we are talking fractions.

Tough break on the ticket, how fast were you going?

95. Not more. I was trying to get home on time for the second half of the England/Slovenia game. Now, I'm not a 100% sure that I got a ticket but I doubt the Mr Policeman would've given up the chance to pass on my details. Top end Skylines are shit hot. Talking about Evos I know a bloke with a suped up Evo - It's got 400 bhp!!!!

I've driven an evo like that (FQ320). Quick as hell, but dull as feck to drive.

Skylines are great, they are like M3's (not quite as good to handle though). The thing that makes them slightly quicker is they are turbo'd which means you can push more power easier, on the M3's you have to work (and spend) to get more. However, I don't really like turbos, I'm a power through the range merchant :D

My next car will either be a skyline, or I'll go right back and get a MK2 Golf GTI and scale it right up! (would be genius if i could get one and RWD convert it!)

I'd love a classic, something like a Datsun 280ZX. And how much would you be willing to pay for a Skyline?

Classic cars are the nuts. My brother-in-law is having a MK1 escort mexico made for him as we speak.

If I had the money to blow right now, I'd buy an E30 M3 and put my E36 engine in it. Now that would be heaven.

On the skyline front, I don't know what I'd pay. It all depends on if I want one ready to go, or something I want as a project (like my M3). However, that's a little way off yet, because I'm not done with my beast  Why, you know someone selling?

Lambs, how did you get into all this? RE Skyline - nah, not really. . .I was wondering whether you'd got mental and buy a new one or just look for a quality used one. I've bought couple of brand news cars, but from now on I probably won't.

 I wouldn't buy a new one even if I did have the money!

Actually I've been into cars less than a year! I lucked into the M3 by chance and back then my knowledge was literally zero. I even crashed her within 23hrs of owning her! (No one warned me about the vanos system :o). That crash was the best thing that could have happened to me though

But like anything I take on, I've thrown myself into it and am determined to learn everything I can about it. For instance, I've been out and driven fast cars, been taught to specifically drive mine, I've had half the engine bay apart now (and believe me, I couldn't even change a spark plug before), I've changed the LSD oil and I've rewired the entire interior because I hated the BMW orange lighting :D and I've changed the entire suspension system and steering rack. Next I'm changing the induction to a carbon cold air system, and I'm going to start messing around with live data and tuning (not to mention a fibreglass bonnet and boot, to save weight and push me into proper skyline territory ;) ).

It hasn't actually cost me that much money, and I've had so much fun with it. Seriously, like programming video games, car mechanics is much easier than people make out!

Pretty much that without the intelligent bit

hehe, an Audi was trying to get away from me. . .the driver must've been redlining it. . .but I was pushing it bumper to bumper with ease. That's the good thing about having the power under bonnet, you don't have to screw your car to get around quickly.

Nice! Screw video games, nothing beats actually knowing the bloke you are up against is sitting behind the wheel totally frustrated because there's nothing they can do about it! That's what I love about mine so much, unless you know the subtle differences between mine and a 318/325/330, you won't know what's hit you when you try it on!

Your car must be bait for the likes of audi's though, I imagine you get a lot of them having a go (and unless it's the RS versions, getting well surprised), but it gets quite annoying doesn't it? The amount of times I've had my boy and missus in the car and some punk in something like a Focus ST or GTI golf and my favourite knob, a Civic type R driver gets up my arse and I can't do anything about it

My favourite trick, and you should try this (just know what you are up against), is when you are being pushed in the fast lane, pull into the middle and as they come alongside you match their speed and yawn, or wave goodbye, or give the speed up sign to them. Then obviously match them all the way as you are still gesturing. It's brilliant, I did it to a Porche Boxster S driver and he looked like he was having a heart attack trying to get his piece of scrap faster

I did that to the Sube yesterday. But the Audi driver was hilarious, he must've been gutted that he couldn't pull away(I was behind him at the lights) but just to prove a point he must've done 60 in a 30 zone. The Corsa driving besides me was even more hilarious, he tried racing me! the poor sod hit the 60 mark trying to hide his embarrassment and all. And the speed cameras were about.

I love boy racers and the way they try it no matter what. Thing is, as long as your car is <7secs 0-60, it'll match anything off the line and up to 30/40, that gives them hope. Hope is brilliant, because the look on their faces as they suddenly lose pace is priceless.

I just can't wait until the day I come up against something like a lambo or ferrari. I'll easily match them up to 40/50, then I'll just pretend to turn off or something to hide my shame as they rocket ahead up the road :wenger:

So I take it from this thread I should buy a decent car instead of GT5?

Not even a decent one. Hell, you can buy an M3 for around £3k.

You might, and most probably will kill yourself, but at least the physics will be perfect, the graphics photo-realistic, you won't need to buy a £350 steering wheel, and you'll pull fit birds!

Do it, do it now!

A mate of a mate was a boy racer, he'd race anything in his Nova until one day he bit off more than he could chew. There he was revving his engine at the lights. . .along side a three wheel Robin Reliant thinking he'd make it look silly. The lights changed and he thought he'd beat it easily. . .a few seconds later he saw the fastest thing on three wheels. This wasn't a normal Robin Reliant. . .it was a modified one. Apparently it must've done 60 in less than 5. He must've had heart attack trying to keep up to a blur. Funny, because he was a boy racer who got shamed by a Trotter.

I bet he felt like a right mug! Hence why I'm a little defensive when I'm at lights and a seemingly lesser car is alongside me. You never know what they've got under the bonnet!

I've seen an original mini-clubman hit 0-60 in just over 4, so I take nothing for granted :D

Some perceptions from the event.

I’ve just got back from the beta rooms event in Birmingham. Played gt5 in 3D. The 3G effect was very subtle on the example I saw. The physics were excellent. There was beginner, intermediate and pro. Pro seemed v similar to gt academy demo. Extremely difficult on the narrow roads of the nurburgring. Intermidate was a great compromise of difficulty and feel. Beginner was similar to prologue standard. Graphics were excellent but we already know this. Toscana was beautiful, especially to day to night transitions and the way the headlights pick up different sign posts etc. Handling was slippy as you’d expect, nothing unusual for a rally racing game. There were however variations in the road surface, going from sand up gravel to some harder stuff ( not quite Tarmac). Damage was a lot more dramatic than I’ve seen on previous videos circling the web. Saw some people mash their cars up pretty good. Polyphony can now say they have the best damage physics on a console driving sim. Didn’t notice anydamage affecting the car handling. Thing that most impressed me? Probably the feel given by the new physics. Probably the best I’ve experienced from a driving game. Pretty close to real driving, and that is a massive complement. Spoke to a Sony guy about a uk release date, he said the “20th of November or around there”. Sorry if my writing is poor, I’m typing this on my phone.

...

Went to BETA event today unfortunatley camera battery died before I got to record footage of nascar. The car was awesome as it had actual deformation damage and looked miles ahead of anything we have seen of the damage for GT5 except for the trailer. The rear bumper crumpled and deformed quite a bit exactly where I hit it. The other cars had damage like all other previous demos but the nascar damage was on another level. Hopefully someone recorded some nascar footage.

I'd like very much to know what driving games he has experienced, and he thinks they have the best damage 'physics', yet says he didn't notice it affecting the car?

I am very optimistic however, I just hope they don't bloody let me down!

Edit: Oh and if the Physics are "Pretty close to real driving", it's not going to be that fun ;)

One thing I hope they improve on is their rolling starts. The way they have their penalty system implemented, it would be very easy to allow racers to take control during the final corner and line up battling out, waiting to see which of the front two will launch first. You'd be surprised at just how fun this is when you're playing games like iRacing.

The other option for our caftard 500 would be to organize a gentlemanly agreement where as the first lap effectively becomes the warm up lap and we set our own grid.

They had it in GT4 but i'm hopping that they have forgotten 'like they did in GT5:P That cars can use both negative and positive camber on each individual wheel.

Anybody who watches Nascar will know that on ovals, they don't set the wheels up to be like

/---\

They are generally \---\ so that the inside wheel has a far bigger contact patch with the road.

Tbf out of all the collector editions that have existed that looks like the only that can justify the £150 price tag.

Very classy.

The collector's edition is €100 less, that's the "signature" edition. Probably not that many being made. The CE is this:

4859725068_e896470f77.jpg

• an exclusive commemorative #5 slip case
• 200 page Apex drivers magazine with hints on driving technique, car tuning, future technologies and more
• five collectible artcards

+ exclusive DLC:
• five ‘ChromeLine’ Collector’s Edition cars
• an exclusive dynamic theme

thanks a lot weaste was looking at that and what do you make of the wheel stand pro?
