Good but less known players from the 90s / early 2000s?

Rob Jones at Liverpool was probably one of the best right backs around in the 90's - injuries curtailed alot of his promise
Aye, good shout. But for injuries would have been England's no2 for the whole decade.

Thought these highlights captured what he was all about - some fine contributions and he even wins a penalty in the left-wing position.

Morten Gamst Pedersen.

Not really early 00s but he signed for Blackburn in 2004, loved watching him play.

Not comparable as Ravels career hasn't taken off at all while there was a time when Jabu was arguably the best player in SA.
Ravel was seen as a talent who could "make it on the world stage". So was Pule. Neither did.

It pains me to say it, but being the best player in SA isn't really an achievement.

Darren Huckerby
Mark Viduka
Ian Harte
Michael Bridges
David Batty
Olivier Dacourt
Paulo Wanchope
Shaun Goater
Jesper Gronkjær
Boudewijn Zenden
Celestine Babayaro
Mario Melchiot
Marian Pahars
Claus Lundekvam

Basically half of Leeds. Also 90s & 2000s football was far more enjoyable than the current one.

Rolling back the years there, talk about nostalgia. I wonder what these guys are up to now.

Anyone said Kevin Phillips yet? That boy was clinical in front of goal. Top scorer in '99/00 season with Sunderland!

Julio Dely Valdez and Dario Silva, fantastic strike partnership for Malaga when they got promoted to La Liga in 1999.

Dely Valdez played for PSG between 95-97 which I didn't realise (they were pretty good in those days aswell and actually won a european trophy) and scored 23 goals in 64 games to them.

He first moved to Real Ovideo in 1997 aged 30. Over next 6 years he scored 80 goals for them and Malaga in just over 200 games.

Now Dario Silva had very interesting life.

Was at his peak v Malaga, scored 36 goals in 100 games. While not in class of Cavani or Suarez also played a very important role in getting Uruguay to 2002 WC, their first in 12 years. Scored in play off v Australia.

He also scored at Maracena in qualifiers and celebrated by making a phone call in telephone booth by side of the pitch.

Just as he was about to retire in 2006 he had a car crash, survived but lost a leg.

Moustapha hadji, youssef chippo and Magnus headmand were all good players for Coventry City.

Clive mendonca. Charlton striker. Didn’t go as far as vardy has but same type of story i think.

Matt Elliot Leicester CB always good for 6+ goals a season

Trevor Sinclair was good but seems to go rubbish when he got rid of his dreadlocks.

Robbie Earle and Ian Taylor goal scoring midfielders Wimbledon and Villa.

Vila also has a South American striker. Juan pablo angel.... oh and remember savo milosveic.

Alvaro Recoba. Uruguayan player, Pure class.

Pretty sure he was highest paid player in world football at one point! An enigma for sure and was at Inter for years, think he was Moratti's favourite players so would get contract extensions when he wasn't regular in team. Wonderous left foot.

Taribo West. If you think Lingard's been young for a long time....

Didn't know he was highest paid player in world at one point. Thanks for letting me know. Fantastic little player only 1.76m. Totally agree on point in bold. One of my favourite players at the time.

I know all of those people!

And if I do, everyone does.

Aren't there some really unknown gems?

What about Marian Pahars? Latvian Southampton legend. Or Benito Carbone? Both scored some legendary goals but nobody talks about them now.

Stefano Fiore
Marco Di Vaio
Montella
Chiesa
Rui Costa
Salas

There were some brilliant players knocking about in Italy in the late 90s and early 00s.

Taribo West. If you think Lingard's been young for a long time....

Babangida has been 20 years old for at least 10 years.

Otherwise, Stéphane Chapuisat was a player that I liked as a kid.

Roberto Donadoni
Sonny Anderson
Miguel Angel Nadal
Jesper Blomqvist
Vitor Baia
Nuno Gomes
Pauleta
Colin Hendry
Tugay
Julian Dicks

Take yer pick

Edit: Not Prem specifically but unsure if that's purpose of thread.

The Vardy of his day was obviously Kevin Philips. To a lesser extent, Mark Viduka.

Krasimir Balakov probably falls into this category. Overshadowed in popularity by his fellow Bulgarian Hristo Stoichkov but was a fantastic player in his own right.

Mário Jardel, still the best pure striker I've seen.

Who was the midfielder we almost signed from Sevilla/Valencia when we were in for Carrick?

Nii lamptey
Peter Ndlovu
Roy Wegerly
Gary Mabbutt
Brian Kilkline
Ian Walker
Didn't Ndlovu break some sort of record by scoring a hattrick at Anfield? I remember Fantasy Football used to take the piss out of I think it was Ray Stubbs saying his name.

I'd Roy Wegerle drawn in my fantasy league team. He was indeed shite, him and Cobi Jones.

There was a Bulgarian centreback, crazy looking fecker with a beard. He used to shoot from freekicks inside his own half. He played in the CL against us a couple of times, but his name escapes me.

Lombardo
Hernandez the Mexican striker with the blonde dye job.
Mario Basler
Thomas Hitzlesperger
Darren Peacock
Gavin Peacock
Dan Petrescu

Fernando Couto for Porto and Parma during the 90’s.

Yep, also played for Barcelona and Lazio.
His first season at Barcelona under Robson he played well, but under Van Gaal he struggled and he almost lost his head with him. I mentioned him because everytime someone mentions Portugal during the 90’s beginning of 2000’s Figo and Rui Costa are always mentioned and he doesn’t get the credit he deserved. Was a true leader, but too aggressive and less technical than Ricardo Carvalho.

To be fair, Figo was a perennial Golden Ball candidate, and Rui Costa might have been one too if he hadn't spent the bulk of his prime years at Fiorentina. As good as Couto was, their level he was not IMO.

Benny McCarthy
Jardel
Rui Costa (big name but felt overshadowed by bigger names in his team's)
Vucinic (was good early 00s)
Kluivert (feel he gets overlooked)
Zamorano
Cordoba
Salas
Montella
Beirhoff
Elber
Sol Campbell (I think he gets overlooked too but he was a beast. Maybe underappreciated than obviously forgotten)
Saviola
Morientes
Mendieta
