Family Guy vs The Simpsons

The day the Simpsons finally died for me was the day i saw the movie - it was complete shite

was sent this by someone the other day

Had this argument with my brother yesterday, he's a big Family Guy fan

His argument was that:

- The Simpsons somewhere along the line ran out of ideas, so instead of continuing as a comedy, they almost drifted away and turned into a Drama.

- Family Guy, Futurama, King of the Hill, American Dad, etc were upping the ante, Fox being the only network to take risks with "Mature comedy" brought them challenges from within the network, assuming Fox knew this would transform the Simpsons for the worse, they may not have been so forceful in pushing these shows.

- Family Guy touches on subjects nobody will reach for in all genres, and take risks and are rewarded by fantastic ratings despite controversy... the Simpsons have NEVER taken these type of risks, and in the new age of "shock and awe" television, these are the things you need to do to survive.

Good points by the kid I must say

No it's pretty rubbish. South Park was (and still is) touching on subjects even Family Guy doesn't touch well before Family Guy even aired. Your brothers skewing things to make Family Guy seem revolutionary...it's not. Simpsons broke the mold in terms of adult comedy cartoons...South Park upped the ante...Family Guy copied both and removed the story telling replacing it with quick gags...It's not remotely revolutionary and It'll never be anywhere near Simpsons or even SP for me. Never.

That's probably the most sensible post you've written on here. Thanks.

I always find it amusing when discussions like this occur with the high brow people come riding along on their matching high horses and claim that people who watch Family Guy are retarded and how they have a low IQ.

First off to those people; "live and let live, watch and let watch" you patronising twats.

Rant over.

For me I love both shows. The Simpsons is probably better as they pioneered the genre. And many of the episodes are absolute classics. I personally think that since Family Guy came about The Simpsons hasn't been as good. Infact i find alot of the newer episodes quite cringeworthy in places as i just don't find them funny.

It's harder to answer which is better out of the two but if we're looking at which show makes me laugh more then it's Family Guy.

I always find it amusing when discussions like this occur because it means someone somewhere actually thinks its worth a comparison. Family Guy is funnier than a lot of new Simpsons but the Simpsons has been going for 20 seasons...from 2-11 it was the best thing on televsion...Family Guy has what? 7 seasons? how can you even begin to compare it?...it's bizarre...I'm not getting on my high horse, but it really isn't sensible. Right now Family Guy is more watchable, but thats all it is...The Simpsons is (or certainly was) THE shit...Family Guy will never be that, it's little and large stuff

The Simpsons is like The Godfather of 90s TV...Family Guy's like GoodFellas...a progression, and quite good, but not comparable as it owes everything to it and hasn't even come close to it's cultural impact, quotability, longevity and status.

Do the episodes of Family guy even have a noticable plot? Seems like it's just one unrelated gag after another.

It's funny but it doesn't come near to the Simpsons at it's best.

Let's not get carried away here, Simpsons the best TV show of the 90s? Fine entertainment but some perspective is in order.

One thing Family Guy never has had and never will, is that place in the eyes of people which leads celebrities and even politicians to make appearances on the show.

There was a point in the late 90s when The Simpsons was on 4 times a day in the UK...twice on BBC 2 and twice on SkyOne..and I'd watch all of them. I've seen every episode from seasons 3-10 about 20 times, but I can still watch them...No other show in history has ever been able to do that for me and I know countless others who would do the same

There are grandparents that love the simpsons..my dad loves the simpsons...whole families could sit down an watch it, it was event TV at one point. FG isn't remotely close to that, and never will be. At the British Comedy Awards, the best of our comics gave Matt Groening a 5 minute standing ovation!!..would they give Seth McFarlane that?..no

...New Simpsons is embarrassing to be honest, but I don't watch it, it's different writers and I barely consider it the same show...but it's easy to forget how much The Simpsons changed. How daring it was, how it paved the way for so much more...and how funny it was that so many of its catchphrases and quotes are part of our culture..

I go to sleep almost every night watching an old episode..honestly... I'm gonna watch some now in fact...I think I'll choose 'A Fish Called Selma'..I think you all should too

I'd agree with that too...Right now, South Park is better. Probably has been for about 5 years. But still not better in the bigger picture, and Trey & Matt would both agree.

I answered the thread question, didn't ask the question.

I think you've taken what i wrote way in the wrong way (or maybe i wrote it in the wrong way). I said i was a fan of both shows but Family Guy has made me laugh more that doesn't necessarily mean that i prefer it.

The Simpsons has better stories & more characters of value. But Family Guy makes me laugh more for whatever reason. I love them both but in different ways.

The fact that i don't like the newer Simpsons series has nothing to do with this.

And you're completely right about the cultural impact of the show.

The thing is, a lot of the new Simpsons are almost trying to be Family Guy, and it doesn't work.

I love them all though; The Simpsons (well, at least the old ones, though the very newest ones seem to be getting good again), Family Guy and South Park. Futurama's ace, too.

To me it seems that Cartman is always the main character in the more ridiculous episodes, like the early series' of anal probing and mutant turkeys and the like. The episodes that focus on satire are by far my favourite, and they tend to use Cartman only as a regular character.

The Simpsons on C4 at the moment is utter garbage (about Homer being a super hero called PieMan) ...I mean really wank. It's a shame some people will grow up with this as their impression of The Simpsons...I disown it personally

Or whatever those cool youngsters said last week.

Great post. Great.

Simpsons. Family Guy tends to be a bit childish and crude humour.

I agree with that.

Family Guy does have brilliant moments. But overall it seems to have simply taken what was great from the Simpsons and what was great from South Park and tried to combine them. Unfortunately it doesn't reach the heights (or come remotely close IMO) of either show.

Simpsons > South Park > Futurama >>>>>>>> Family Guy >>>>>>>> King of the Hill >>>> (continue for four pages) >>> American Dad

Obviously the new episodes of both Simpsons and South Park are nowhere near as good as they used to be, but I'm rating them on when they were at their best.

This could well lead to some kind of 'Caftards All Time Greatest Animated Series' poll

where do Beavis&Butthead or Ren&Stimpy fit into this?

Did anyone ever watch Duckman or Dr Katz?
