That's the debate about to be had on BBC Radio Fivelive.

If people wish to have a barney over it, go right ahead. Alternatively you could just post loads of youtube clips.
 
The Simpsons was brilliant in its heyday. Now not so much. People want more edgy humour now, and the Simpsons can't offer that anymore, Family Guy does.

For pure laughs, I'd watch Family Guy/South Park, but for nostalgia reasons I might watch the odd Simpsons episode.

although i would argue that the simpsons is overall the better programme owing to its ability to appeal to a wider age range. I can watch an episode at the age of 12 and 21, understand and enjoy it, whilst picking up on completely different jokes each time. there is a lot more complexity to the humour of the simpsons than a lot of people give credit for, and to be consistently churning out jokes for the length of time they have been making the simpsons for is a pretty impressive feat.

old simpsons is better than virtually anything on tv but i prefer new Family Guy to new Simpsons stuff
 
Family Guy is fecking awful. Its not only incredible dull, but also fecking annoying and a pain to the ears. Only people people with very low IQ or shit humour can find this appaling load of shit funny. Its amazing how they can manage to steal so many things from The Simpsons and make it worse. Absolute awful pile of wank program.

The pretext for the discussion on the BEEB is that Family Guy has been nominated for the Best Comedy Emmy, which the Simpsons failed to achieve.

I don't see this as conclusive of anything overall however.

You can't brand certain humour as 'low IQ' or stupid just because it doesn't suit your tastes.

Some of the jokes on Family Guy are brilliantly funny.

Of all the shite characters that hail from American comedy TV the father in Family Guy is one of the worst.

I like Stewie, and Brian; The Simpsons are dead to me this last while, even the old ones are tainted by the tedium.

Since then: Family Guy

I think the Simpsons are culturally significant and will be considered by many as one of the greatest shows ever created... Family Guy are picking up where the Simpsons left off but are more awe-striking.

There's no way Family Guy will ever have a impact worldwide like the Simpsons did
 
I don't like Family Guy. Most of the "Jokes" revolve around the fat Dad character saying "That reminds me of the time that" cue surreal gag involving fat dad and a celebrity or a dinosaur etc!

It's occasionally funny but not my cup of tea.

To be fair, you could argue the humour in Family Guy is smarter than that of the Simpsons. I think Family Guy shits all over Simpsons, thats just my opinion.

Thats the same for me too. And there is no chance in hell of any other cartoon having the impact that the Simpsons had. It was the first primetime cartoon for the whole family and will be remembered long after its finished.

Now what this thread needs, some quotes from my favourite characters Lionel Hutz and Troy McClure.

Lionel Hutz: This is the greatest case of false advertising I've seen since I sued the movie The Never Ending Story.

Lionel Hutz: Mr. Simpson, I don't use the word 'hero' lightly, but you are the greatest hero in American history.

Troy McClure: Don't kid yourself, Jimmy. If a cow ever got the chance, he'd eat you and everyone you care about!

Troy McClure: My good looks paid for that pool, and my talent filled it with water. Hi, I'm Troy McClure, your future uncle.

I remember arguing with you before over your opinion that only thick people can find Family Guy funny. But i shan't this time.

Now that can be debated, most episodes of Family Guy are slapstick orientated but the ones that focus more on Stewie and Brian actually have more intellegent/political humour. On the same hand episodes of the Simpsons have been slapstick as well and others more "intelligent".

The ones that deal with real life subjects such as Homer trying to come to terms with the fact he's going to die after eating the blowfish was actually quite touching. Then again you have the episodes such as the one where he joins clown college and gets kidnapped by the mob, which are more visual gags rather than witty comments.

The only real thing that seperates the Simpsons from Family Guy is that the Simpsons is a hell of a lot more quotable. So many great one liners that Family Guy doesn't really have at all. I could sit here and reel off quotes from the Simpsons until the cows come home, but i'd struggle to think of more than 5 from Family Guy.

That pretty much sums up my opinion on The Simpsons. If the recent series' hadn't done it the movie killed off any affection I had for the show.

Having not watched much Family Guy I used to hold a general dislike for it, but once I gave it a chance it's at least averagely funny compared to most of the shit on TV. Stewie, Brian, and Adam West are all pretty funny. I'd say it's unfair to label all the humour in it as stupid. Some of it undoubtedly is, and a bit too much of the humour is just insulting unpopular celebrities, but compare it to most TV comedy and it's not that bad.

Agreed, the Simpsons at its peak was absolutely classic TV, some of the best TV ever. The writing was simply comic genius, so clever.

The Simpsons has declined from that, but Family Guy has never gotten close to being as good as the Simpsons at their peak, and I actually think Family Guy ripped off some of the humour of the earlier Simpsons episodes, without managing to ever get as good though.
 
As has been said , the Simpsons has continued for at least several seasons too many and this has hurt it i think. I cam across an ep the other day and it made no impact on me at all, sad in a way.

Mid to late 90s or thereabouts was when it reached its peak and it was great entertainment if not as side splitting, for to be fair to both the style is hardly the same.

And by new Simpsons I mean about the last 10 years.

Lionel Hutz and Troy McClure are sadly missed. The simpsons has never quite been the same since Phil Hartman died.

Both shows are not long past their best. Recent epuisodes I've seen of Family Guy have been painfully unfunny. I just hope it's spell in the wilderness is shorter than The Simpsons has been. Both shows should end to protect their legacy. Unfortunately there's too much money and not enough dignity involved with these people.
 
Had this argument with my brother yesterday, he's a big Family Guy fan

His argument was that:

- The Simpsons somewhere along the line ran out of ideas, so instead of continuing as a comedy, they almost drifted away and turned into a Drama.

- Family Guy, Futurama, King of the Hill, American Dad, etc were upping the ante, Fox being the only network to take risks with "Mature comedy" brought them challenges from within the network, assuming Fox knew this would transform the Simpsons for the worse, they may not have been so forceful in pushing these shows.

- Family Guy touches on subjects nobody will reach for in all genres, and take risks and are rewarded by fantastic ratings despite controversy... the Simpsons have NEVER taken these type of risks, and in the new age of "shock and awe" television, these are the things you need to do to survive.

It's not the humour I hate most about Family Guy. It's the god awful animation and most of all the incredibly annoying voice acting. It manages to be dull and freekin annoying at the same time.

Same here. I grew up on The Simpsons and actually learned most of my english by watching them. Family Guy on the other hand is just fun, comedy doesn't have to be really smart, political or highbrow to be funny. There is still a big underlying sattire in both these shows though most of the time.

i fecking hate it, it ruined a portion of my uni years

the amount of times ive sat on the sofa while be-flip flopped dunderheads utter HUR HUR! to the most banal and juvenile humour ever is beyond belief.

Its got to the stage where i feel physically sick if i watch it.

This gets my vote but i would class it more like:

Old Simpsons > Old Family guy > New Family Guy > or equal to New Simpsons

By Old family guy i mean before it got cancelled (seasons 1-3), new family guy has been good but its a bit predictable now... So has the New Simpsons seasons, i mean in how many episodes are they going to show Marge and Homer getting married again? I think the count is already at 3.
