Would you guys be confident of Fabregas picking us over Arsenal, City and Chelsea? It may just be me, but we never seem to fare well in such situations. Hopefully, we've sounded Fabregas out already. That's my only crumb of comfort - surely we wouldn't have just bid without getting an indication from the player?

Manchester United timing on Cesc Fabregas transfer bid is utterly bizarre

Wanted: Cesc Fabregas (Picture: AP)
Most football fans would be delighted to learn that their club had put in a bid for a world-class midfielder – but the news that Manchester United have offered £30m for Cesc Fabregas has been met with incredulity.
The first issue is that Fabregas presumably wants to stay at Barcelona, his boyhood club, and would likely feel awkward about returning to England to play for United.
We already have one former Arsenal captain in our ranks and, while it’s clear he’s delighted with his decision, given he won the title in his first season, Fabregas wouldn’t be joining United from a club that doesn’t win anything.
Fabregas has won more than his fair share of silverware in the two seasons he’s been in Spain but he’s played nothing like the role he did at Arsenal or would play at United. He made plenty of appearances last season, although rarely was given the full 90 minutes, which may worry him in the lead up to the World Cup.
You would imagine that Fabregas would take playing less frequently for Barcelona over playing every week for United or Arsenal though. Iniesta and Xavi aren’t getting any younger, with the latter suffering from injuries, so Fabregas will be happy to bide his time.
The timing of United’s bid is utterly bizarre
The only way Fabregas would be open to leaving Barcelona is if the club tells him they’re prepared to sell him. While it would appear unlikely, given they have just lost Thiago to Bayern Munich, the capture of Neymar might mean the Spaniards opt to play the more defensive Song or Mascherano in Fabregas’ potential spot in the team, to allow their new signing and Messi more creative freedom.
Still, even if you were to ignore the fact Fabregas won’t want to leave and the probability that Barcelona won’t want to sell, the timing of United’s bid is utterly bizarre.
Having been interested in signing Thiago, the time to go for Fabregas was the moment the club knew Bayern Munich were going to buy Thiago, so we could get in there first.
If Fabregas really has been a serious transfer target of ours, then why not go for him the moment the transfer window opened? To wait until the day after Barcelona confirm the sale of another of their midfielders is ridiculous. Can the club really be that naive?
While United’s new chief executive Ed Woodward claims we can spend £60-70m on one player this summer, you’d be forgiven for dismissing this as nonsense. David Gill used to tell us that the £80m from the Ronaldo sale was still available for us to spend, yet we’ve seen the likes of Modric, Sneijder, Hazard and Ozil all move clubs in that time and United have remained in the shadows.
Is this Fabregas bid an attempt from the club to try and show we can still flex our financial muscle, while knowing Barcelona won’t accept our offer and the player won’t want to leave the club? That may be a very cynical outlook but it’s probably a more favourable story for fans than the club showing embarrassing incompetence in the transfer market.
If this bid is a genuine one it should have been made weeks ago, so don’t run out to get ‘Fabregas’ printed on the back of your kid’s shirt just yet.

He never said that Cesc wasnt for sale, or did i miss that man?

You'd think that would have been the first thing he says & then that Cesc doesnt want to leave anyway, so case closed. That leads me to believe they might be willing to sell for the right price. feck knows to be honest

That's what I'm reading into this as well. He said something cryptic like "I'm relaxed about the situation." We know what a categorical "not for sale" sounds like as we heard it from Moyes on Rooney - this was not that from Tito.

Re competition from other PL clubs, maybe I'm just being biased but Cesc strikes me as the sort of personality that would choose us or Arsenal over Chelsea or City. If Cesc is available, we have to move heaven and earth for him. Would be unforgivable for us to lose him to a PL rival.

He wouldn't go to City or Chelsea, their mids are packed already and we're champions. Arsenal on the other hand..

Also that would be REALLY embarrassing - no-one is interested until we make a bid, but then they decide to come in and take him instead.

This is extraordinarily stupid. This masterplan only works if Barca, the team selling to Thiago to Bayern, didn't know they were selling Thiago.

We were on Thiago's case for 3 years and he still chose Bayern. We were in for Nasri before City etc etc.

It matters not a jot.

Its funny. With Thiago were so sure and expecting him to show up at Carrington last week; with Fabregas we are saying it will never happen and its an embarrassment to put a bit in.

Travails of a new era.

They have NO reason to sell Fabregas, the people trying to look at different reasons why they would sell Fabregas let's be serious here. It's a bid which shows our intent as a club we want to be a part of the major players in the transfer market, those saying less than 25 million :smirk: be serious.

My personal straw to clutch is the fact that Fabregas is far from indispensable for Barcelona, ultimately he's replaceable for them, at the right price. That and the fact that some fans haven't taken to him.

Thiago made much more sense.

Completely untrue. He's not a regular starter in their midfield and they require transfer funds to invest elsewhere in the squad.

*sigh* Thiago, in his first interview as a Bayern player, stated that his connection with Guardiola was 'the main factor' in joining his new club. Fabregas is at his dream club, with friends and family nearby. Both of these players were, apparently, offered much higher wages (by us) than they are currently earning. So, where exactly is United's 'failure' in all this? What is the club supposed to do when even the modern tactic of offering a mountain of money fails to attract a player?

It is all just a smoke-screen to cushion the impact when we end up just bringing in Fellaini.

If anything, it's genius from United.

Is he? Who would replace him if he's not there. He has not been at his very best but he has scored almost 30 goals these last two years and created a fair bit he's a world class player and they know that.

The stumbling block must be Manchester, right?

Agree.. The Glazers have been doing this for years - taking the fans for a ride, saying we have the ronaldo money to spend but then have not been able to compete to get the best players in the transfer market. The Fabergas bid is just an attempt to hide their incompetence in closing the Thiago deal - They went haggling on Thiago until Bayern went and closed the deal in 3 days by paying well above the release clause. Why didn't we do that knowing that Thiago was worth well over the Release Clause? The management has been doing this for years and I get the feeling that Fergie's hands were tied too and couldn't say much against the Glazers. We sit here and listen to what They (management) tell us but in reality there is much more going on behind the scenes. The timing of releasing the info on the bid is quite peculiar as well - they were definitely trying to cover up..

They are a rich club I seriously doubt the transfer of Neymar has bankrupted them, 30 million will not make a dent in their debt. He is next in a midfield rotation with a declining Xavi. This is his dream club to leave after two years? They would have to kick him out.

I agree at this stage that it looks like the Thiago situation was unavoidable (though there's also plenty floating about that Moyes wasn't actually overly bothered about him) as soon as pep came along, however the Fabregas bid was just ridiculous in my eyes because it was never in a million years going to be accepted. Do you think the club actually thought that if they bid £25m then this transfer was actually plausible considering he only recently said he had absolutely no intention of leaving, and the day before they already lost their most talented youngster who plays in practically the same position? Hells naw.

It is all just a smoke-screen to cushion the impact when we end up just bringing in Fellaini.

If anything, it's genius from United.

Why are people pedalling this line constantly? If it was a public relations stunt or a smokescreen, it hasn't worked very fecking well, has it?

Completely untrue. He's not a regular starter in their midfield and they require transfer funds to invest elsewhere in the squad.

But for them to lose one player who played some part in 37 games, and another who played some part in 48 games from the same position, seems unlikely really?

I wouldn't say it's completely untrue, they don't have to sell him. And it's not like they're desperate for money with the only source of funding being from selling.

Is he? Who would replace him if he's not there. He has not been at his very best but he has scored almost 30 goals these last two years and created a fair bit he's a world class player and they know that.

Well he's not better than Xavi, Iniesta or Busquets, the three starting midfielders, so he's definitely dispensable. Neymar can, and probably will, easily score thirty odd goals this season too.

If he was coming back (which he isn't), he'd come to play for Wenger.

I doubt he's coming here but he's never coming back to Arsenal at the peak of his powers nothing has changed. If you where challenging for titles he would still be at Arsena imo.

if we really have money - make a bid for Bale or Ronaldo...Ronaldo has not renewed a contract, this would be the perfect time why not try..? or Bale for the same reason - put in a bid for 60-70 million and see what happens. Do we really have the funds as we are told??

I said all along that if the reason he went was because of Pep and assurances that Pep had given, fair play to him. He preferred to go there, not much we coulda done about it.

Apparently us and Bayern agreed terms with him, and then he had to choose. Took the lad a while, understandable.

If one of those guys gets injured/suspended he plays plus Xavi is 33 he is not expected to play week in week out anymore. He gets his fair share of playing time. Is Phil Jones or Hernandez dispensable? You do't need to be a starter to be important to a club. Fbaregas is a big part of the next 5 years for Barca more than Iniesta or Xavi.

He's going nowhere unless we bid up to 50 mil which we won't even then he may resist the transfer as there is nothing to say he isn't happy in Spain. Much like Ronaldo I'm struggling to see how people see this as a viable transfer.

I think 2006 want royalties on that argument.

Their clubs will not sell.

I still don't get how the 'timing is bizarre'.

It's the transfer window we're after a CM, we've put in an offer. If that counts a 'bizarre' football in the afternoon must count as a serious head feck.
