Day 23: Netherlands vs. Argentina

De Jong being back is a major boost for Holland.
I just hope he stays cool and doesnt do something stupid.
I expected RVP to start, hope he has a good game.

Think it'll be a very tight game, you never know with messi on your team but I hope Netherlands can get the win. Should be a good game though.

I will feel for the Dutch if they do go on to beat Argentina but lose in the finals...

Back to back world cup final defeats (again), 4 time runners up and losing for a second time in a WC final to Germany of all teams.

Think the fear of that outcome happening will work against them either tonight or in the final, just can't see this Dutch side coping with that kind of pressure.

Argentina to win.
This is an extremely hard game to call. If the bookmakers' odds are anything to go by, Argentina will win because ever since the knockout round started, all the bookmakers' favorites won but I am going to go with Holland because of 1) LVG 2) They have an amazing record against Argentina and 3) Nigel De Jong is back. I can see the Dutch frustrating the Argies and getting a goal on the break. I might be wrong but I just got this feeling that Holland will prevail. Moreover, a Germany vs Holland final will be more fascinating. I don't see the Argies giving the Germans any problems but Holland could be tricky. I just want to see a more balanced World Cup final. You can be sure that Holland will be a much tougher opponent for Germany than Argentina.

I think Argentina will win in 90 but I've had a saver on Holland to win outright since Germany or Argentina wins are profitable outcomes.

What are all these black posts?

EDIT: This new match day thing is pretty cool

So LvG was praised for his change in tactics (bringing KJH on for RVP against Mexico, then the keeper change against Costa Rica) recently, what surprise will he spring this round?

Kluivert on at half time I reckon.

Will the brasilians cheer, tonight ?

So he got as much out of this group of players as he could and you sound convinced and all that... yet out of all the different scenarios of a bunch that should fail because of lacking just that little extra bit of talent and quality, you go on to predict that Holland will hold out for a shoot out lottery that has little to do with the footballing qualities of said group of players.... in fact, if you believe it isn't about luck, they have a very strong lineup for it.

Senseless.

Of course we could still go out on penalties, but it doesn't make your reasoning less weird. Holland has too little talent in their tank so they will get to penalties and DEFFO LEWS.

No, your post is senseless (like many I might add). Did you think Costa Rica were as good as Holland in the last round, even though it went to penalties? Holland are basically in an away game given how many Argentinians will have made the short hop north and will probably play on the counter, relying on the brilliance of Robben. As such, it looks like, unlike yesterday's circus, it could be a highly tactical game with goals at a premium. Ordinarily I would back Argentina due to their greater attacking talent but, in the context of a World Cup semi, it could well go to penalties. As Holland have an atrocious record at penalties (only "bettered" by England) and have already played their joker (changing the keeper), I would expect Argentina to win in extra time or on penalties.

Really hope this doesn't turn out a tactical, defensive minded affair. An early goal and Robben, Messi and the others letting it rip would be great.

I think it will depend on RVP and De Jong fitness levels. If they are acceptable, they will win, imo.

Argentina looks pretty average if you take out Messi.

oh no, that cnut of a ref in charge. why is he even allowed to ref anymore?

If it goes to penalties, I still fancy the dutch despite their atrocious record. They finally broke their penalty jinx so they won't have a mental issue with it.

Strong feeling for Holland tonight, it's almost like it's meant to be for us - and for them. I think they want to get to the final and play this time. Was at 2010 final, and the fans were great but the team left a lot and they were getting a lot of stick at the end. And, all this way into the completion, I realise I can watch this for free at home... Could've saved a fortune.

Guys if van gaal comes to final, what would his ego be at United? Wouldnt be it bad for Manchester lol.

Maybe, but remember England won a penalty shoot out versus Spain in the QF of Euro 96 before losing on penalties to the Germans in the semis. When push comes to shove, I would back Argentina in that situation.

Is this the same Perez that we've been linked with starting for Arg?

Have a feeling this will be a very tight and highly intensive game. Think it will go to extra time, and possibly even penalties, after either 0-0 or 1-1.

Think Holland can do it. With De jong back it might just tip it in their favour.
