Day 23: Netherlands vs. Argentina

Is "Last Tango for Messi" spelled in Dutch the same as in English, or they really want it go worldwide with that one?

Is van Persie out then? Think the Argies will miss Di Maria more than Holland will RVP if he is out. Di Maria's more like their Robben.
I think he will end up playing despite having a stomach problem.

Holland seems so confident they will beat Argentina.

I will feel for the Dutch if they do go on to beat Argentina but lose in the finals...

Back to back world cup final defeats (again), 4 time runners up and losing for a second time in a WC final to Germany of all teams.

Think the fear of that outcome happening will work against them either tonight or in the final, just can't see this Dutch side coping with that kind of pressure.

Argentina to win.

Yesterday I said I expected Holland to beat argentina. But the more I think about it im not sure. If Holland had missed a penalty and Costa Rica didn’t and went through on penalties (no matter how much is studied, there is a big element of luck in here), then what would we be saying of the inability of Holland to break the very organized Costa Rica defence? Instead, now we are talking about the importance of changing goalkeepers and how that affected the mind of the rival players. Holland were not great but people are talking like it was a big triumph. Unless they raise their game the same way Germany did yesterday and perform at a level higher than their recent performances in the knockouts this could be very close and argentina could beat them. Argentina are organised defensively like costa rica are but they have much more threats going forward. It will be interesting to see how they handle messi.

Robben went back to back CL finals, lost the first one, then redeemed himself in the second one

I would feel more sorry for Germany tbh. They were in the final in 2002, the semis in 2006, the final in 2008 and the semis in 2010 and 2012 and now another final in 2014. If we are saying which team deserves it more going by past results then it would be Germany for me. Holland were also very lucky to have gotten a relatively easy path to the final in 2010 imo and were lucky against brazil in which they were outplayed a lot before sneijders lucky goals.

Anyone who would have been talking about "the inability" of the Dutch breaking the Costa Rica defence would be a complete bellend. Sorry to say.

Holland broke Costa Rica's defence, but were extremely unlucky on the day not to finish at least a couple of the 18 shots that they produced. Any other day and RvP would have poached 2 goals, Sneijder would have buried one of his free kicks (one went on the bar) and another Dutch player would have placed his shot out of Navas's reach.

People telling me how Holland were unable to break CR defence either watched the game with their eyes closed or are on a WUM mission.

Argentina has got a very organised defence, not very.susceptible at the back often,if they manage to keep robben quiet, then i fancy argentina to win.Hopefully it will be a thriller and not one sided as ydays game although it was entertaining.

If they lost then that is what the media and fans would have been talking about. That is how the knee-jerk media and fans work. That is football my friend. A lot of people act like bellends when talking about it :).

An easy path? Alright then, some of you are really funny it has to be said. Then it's easy, then it is hard, whatever suits your argument better will be used as a fact.

Beating Brasil (2010 version) and Uruguay is not an easy feat. Spain had a similarly easy run to the final, only two tough opponents were Portugal and Germany and I don't even think Portugal counts.

Unfortunately they do, but I'll always mention the actual game statistics and what happened on the pitch.

It's mind boggling how people can ignore what actually happened during the game and then go on and claim Costa Rica was unbreakable due to defending well. 18 shots against 1 shot, that is not defending well, that is being extremely lucky.

Robben went back to back CL finals, lost the first one, then redeemed himself in the second one

I remember Robben missing a few one on ones with Casillas in the 2010 final, forget Iniesta, those two decided the outcome of that match more than anyone else.

At least Germany have won it before. No one wants to be the team that's been to the dance four times but never taken home the trophy. Playing against your biggest rivals as well. Pressure Brazil felt would be similar to how the Dutch team will feel if they make the final.

All of those near misses have *likely* prepared Germany for this final, they know what isn't good enough and are ready to go a step beyond their previous performances.

How many of this current Dutch side played in 2010? (Genuine question by the way, off the top of my head I count Kuyt, RVP, Robben, Sneijder, De Jong and possibly Huntelaar).

Don't get me wrong, Argentina will be feeling the pressure as well, they have got the whole of Brazil rooting against them right now and pressure on Messi as an individual to win the world cup like Maradona did all those years ago. They don't have that history of near misses like the Dutch though, nor the deep rivalry with Germany so its a different kind of pressure.

Barcelona and arsenal and the likes get criticised for creating lots of chances but not taking then when they lose. Ronaldo and messi are praised to the heavens when their teams win but are ripped apart when they lose. Mourinho and van gaal are geniuses when they win but are overrated when they lose. I don't think Holland were bad vs costa rica, im just saying that they could have lost and they and their manger would not be getting the praise they are getting now. Im basically talking about the hypocritical and ridiculous overreactions to things.

That is true, I see your point. A great footballing country like Holland with the players and teams they have produced along with managers should have a world cup to its name. I think they will have to be better than they have been to beat argentina although Germany showed yesterday that some of these teams are capable of going up several gears. As for messi, I personally rate him among the top three players ever in the game with maradona and di stefano whether he wins the world cup or not.

It's a bit stretch to think that Netherland will feel more pressure in Semi-Final, just because they fear of losing again in the Final. Just doesn't make sense to me. Shouldn't be the pressure is more on Argentina, because none of their players have ever made it to the Final?

I can imagine RVP today in the receiving end of that pass..
Come on you Dutch delight

Nigel de Jong, RVP and Vlaar all play.

Love that Last Tango.. shop. Should do one with Rodgers in Messis place.

Can't make any decent prediction, and I'm pretty neutral, but 70/30 in Netherlands favour. So, let's say 3-2 to Netherlands, and a good game?

Oh no, Messi needs to be very careful of that talentless hack in midfield.

As a Dutch citizen, I really want the Netherlands to win this one. A Germany-Netherlands final would be so sweet because of the rivalry.

Hope De Jong and RVP are 100% for this, for the sake of a semi final worthy performance.

Louis van Gaal tactics, fake De Jong injury but instead send him to seclusion where he focuses only on stopping Messi in anticipation of playing Argentina.
