Day 23: Netherlands vs. Argentina

You gotta be kidding me. Is this the first WC you follow?

There was not much wrong with their first 10 minutes actually. We then scored via a corner and the momentum swung heavily in our favour. The Brazilian defense lost their structure and composure for about 15 minutes. Such periods are far from uncommon, especially in high pressure situations and when you lack a clear leader in the defense who takes charge.

Sometimes you get lucky, survive such minutes without a major loss and manage to reclaim some composure. Sometimes the opposing team punishes you for it and scores another. We scored four.

You can downgrade this strength all you want, but the level of pressure, intensity, efficiency and ruthlessness we displayed in these minutes was special. If that wouldn´t be the case, then you would have spankings all over the place in football.

Brazil offered us the space, but it was our play that punished them so hard for it. We never gave them the chance to recover by going for the kill and scoring at will over and over again. By the 30 minute mark we had broken them mentally and morally. And this is something the German national team deserves credit for.

I very much concur.

I laughed too because such a strong Barca team with Figo, Rivaldo, Guadiola, Kluviert all at peak under him choked year after year in CL, never made a final

1998/1999 CL, didn't get out of group stage. :D :D :D
1999/2000 CL, , unbelievable squad, choked against Chelsea (average team, Flo was their leading striker FFS) 1-3, luckily won 5-1 at home, then collapsed against a very average Valencia in semi 1-4, out of CL.

whatever.

This'll be unpopular but this is Van Gaal's problem. The guy over-complicates in order to prove a point of his tactical mastery and in the process makes strange calls.

Vlaar for the first penalty was pure idiocy. Not a regular taker, wasn't confident, obviously missed it. The pressure on the other players to come was then fever pitch and it cost them dearly.

Sabella got it bang on. You start with Messi and you put Rodriguez (weakest) in at four. Easy tactics, easy win.
Yeah I agree with you. In this instance, it was weird to see Vlaar take the first one, although there are a few mitigating factors: Vlaar was probably on a confidence high, and penalties should be taken depending on who is willing to do so (many managers have explained that's how they function).

In a sense though, 'over complicating' things is just another way of doing things in an unconventional way. Swapping Cilessen for Krul in the quarters was over complicating things in a sense, would've been a simpler sub to just bring on a field player during extra time to have some fresh legs and keep the keeper that had played 120 minutes, but he didn't.

Some will work, some won't pay off. And when they don't, the finger is easy to point.

You have to admit though, this Netherlands team was extremely mediocre, and when you have Van Persie having a bad day (and he's been having bad days since the beginning of the knock out stages) and Sneijder being a shadow of his former self, that literally leaves Robben as your only spark of creativity. And I really don't think that's exagerating, the squad was very weak. So fingers will be pointed at an exit in the semis for a decision he made, but I'd rather look at the overall work he did with that team, the level of tactical awareness they had and the self belief, and think that all in all, he's done an exceptional job with them. No way is that squad the third or fourth best in the world.

Oh and to answer another of your posts on another page, he's more than a 'good' manager, but I think you know that.

Two players refused to take the first pen and Vlaar stepped up.

Not to ruin a good story, like.

Not to worry, I never make a save in a penalty shootout

Final thing is that Holland parked a bus in front of their goal line and hoped Robben would save their asses.
But was Argentina the team that had more and better chances to score.
Argentina is at the final because deserved to win every match played.

On the other hand I dont think Argentina will be able to beat Germany.

The Germans have already been celebrating their 4th WC when watching yesterday`s game.

At the moment I tend to think that Germany-France has already been the final.

Short analysis of the game:
Both teams played very cautious and defensive. It was clear right away that it would be more a chess match then a high scoring goal fest.

Argentina man marked Robben very very well, he hardly got the ball for the first 70 minutes. The same goes for Holland who defended Messi rather well, having said that, Argentina was the slightly better team until the 70th minute as they were more dangerous when going forward.

The last 20 minutes and in extra time Holland was better in my opinion, they started to get more control of the game and had Argentina defending until the last chance by Palacio.

In the end, I think Holland was too cautious and that lead to them fecking up simple attacking basics, like passing a ball forward and making those incisive runs and through balls.

However, advancing as far as they did with such an average team bar Robben, Sneijder I have to congratulate them. Amazing achievement.

Congrats to Argentina for making the final. I'll be cheering Germany! :)

Argentina dealt really well with Robben. Likewise, Netherlands didn't leave much space for Messi either. Boring as feck game, but you gotta appreciate (perhaps not admire) the tactics of both managers that did work out to some extent.

It was somewhat disappointing as a neutral. Had the toe teams been slightly more adventurous we could have gotten a terrific game given the attacking talents on both sides.

Does anyone know who the 2 players were that refused to take a penalty?

I agree. Can't blame them for not going to-to-toe with this much at stake though.

I don't know. What's the point though? You're creating a situation with the possibility of penalties deciding the game being huge. I'd rather let my players decide the game than it come down to one feck up. Is okay if you're playing a much better team an you sort of settle for penalties because you haven't got a great chance in a head on encounter.

Anyways, I guess neither manager wanted to "do a Brazil". Shame. But these games are part of world cups

LVG didn't get his tactics right this game, there was no width and the attack was poor. I watched the game with a dutch guy, he agreed with me, RVP was the worst player on the pitch and Holland was setup too defensively.

Credits to Ron Vlaar. Rio Feridinand: "Ron Vlaar has been immense. Best centre-back performance of the tournament so far for me."
The stats don't lie. He won 100% of his tackles. He won 100% of his aerial duels. He made eleven clearances and six interceptions and enjoyed 92% pass accuracy.

But his key performance indicator must surely be that he had the world's best player - Lionel Messi - in his back pocket.

I don't understand that people here say he would maybee good inove for substitute. hahahaha

Same way 2 teams are making the 3rd and 4rth match without playing one good game.

You don't think beating Spain 5-1 was a good game?

However well or poorly Brazil have played, several of their games have been great entertainment. They've also scored 11 goals. Holland 12.

Germany 17. Argentina 8. Four of them by one player.

The Argentina '06 team? Now they deserved to win the World Cup.

He had a fantastic game last night. Doesn't suddenly make him a fantastic player.

Mascherano had a great game but he should never have been allowed to continue after that head injury, he was clearly disorientated. Maybe a player needs to die before teams, players, FAs and FIFA take head injuries seriously.

Well. Again, not world champions... feck. A final against Germany would've been such a dream come true.. Football is so awful.
I truly (naively) thought we were going to win it. In 4 years I'll probably think the same.
Immensely disappointed. Just a game, fecking hell. Good luck Argentina. Afraid Germany will fecking win it. feck..
Hope so so much we can win it once in my lifetime... Been my dream since I was a kid. Don't want Germany to win it, come on Argentina, feck
I'm not Dutch but I also want to see Holland win it before I croak. It's always nice to see new winners, like France and Spain. The Netherlands are long overdue. Greece will probably win it first though

No. Was obviously an accident, if Silva scored before Holland ties the match, Holland would never reach semis.

What about if Sneijder scores before the non existant penalty is given? How would the match have ended then? meh
