Day 23: Netherlands vs. Argentina

It won't be easy like that. Their defence are slow, easily exposed against Algeria in the first half, only went unpunished because of the lack of quality of Algeria attackers. If Di Maria is fit to play, he , Lavezzi and Messi can easily punish the immobile German defence.

Vastly superior in midfield and the Algeria performance hasn't been repeated. Germany are a proper team with quality players. They'll run Argentina ragged.

Did the Dutch actually manage just a single shot on target in 120 minutes? That is seriously pathetic.

They didn't score a single goal in two games (both went to ET). That's 240 minutes, 4 hours of football.

They deserve to go out. Plain and simple.

I really don't like that Argentina is in the final, they have not deserved it in my opinion. Yet to win a game by more than one goal, as opposed to Holland, who've had to beat some good teams to reach the semi.

Anyone know why Huntelaar wasn't the first kicker? He was a straight replacement for RvP. Did he just pussy out, or was it LvG's doing?

I'd argue that Netherlands had been riding on luck even more so than Argentina. The way they came back against Spain and Mexico , and the penalty win against Costa Rica. It's been a good ride, but finally over today.

Oh and the Argies didn't score some added time goals then? Face it they were lucky.

And the piss easy group they had.

Germany missed two vital parts in the first half vs. Algeria. Lahm as RB and the best defender of the tournament.

Messi been average at best all competition, played against shite teams but now that they're in the final he's one step closer to that Maradona status and completely undeserved at that.

Germany to win 4-0.

Pathetic comment. He's had a poor game but been a match winner in pretty much all the games bar the last two. Messi doesn't need a world cup to be up there with Maradona, what he's done at club level trumps the fat druggie cheat, people say he needs to wina world cup and he's a game away from doing it. No more excuses

Great game by Mascherano. Hopefully he'll play in midfield next season.

Because they didn't meet a team with quality attackers : France and Brazil are both shit poor in attacker quality.

Let's just wait and see. It for sure won't be a rollover.

Thought it was an interesting match at times and a fairly poor one at other times (plenty to be desired in terms of quality - passes flying all over the place, poor clearances, poor finishing too).

Fair enough that Argentina went through. If one of the teams looked a bit sharper it was them, I felt. I hope Messi can step up in the final and give us a properly grand end to the WC. I'm not his biggest fan, perhaps, but I hope he plays a blinder and wins it for Argentina.

If he plays like he did tonight, though, I'd rather the Germans take it. He doesn't involve himself enough for my money - and that's counting in the obvious fact that he's usually well marked. When he does break free he almost always creates something - and he was up against nothing more than competent opposition tonight, he wasn't being hounded by a pack of top notch defenders by any means.
Its not as easy as that you know

This is the problem I have when it comes to Ronaldo, Messi and I remember Henry used to get it as well. Whenever they are well marked or below bar then all the criticism come. The Holland CB's were great today as were the Argentine ones. Its no surprise that Messi and Robben had below par games. Both teams were very conservative hence why it went to pens. It was almost impossible for either player to make an big contribution, when both had a couple of players around them when ever they had the ball.

Huntelaar is usually the 4th or 5th isnt he? My guess is Vlaar volunteered, or LvG did for him.

Don't hold your breath, he might score a hat trick in the final and the "has to do it with a team like Napoli" argument that has vanished lately will surface again.

I don't get why any Footballer after 40 years of penalty shootouts being in existence would still decide to put a penalty only slightly to one side with little power?

If they can't deal with the pressure, just smash it.

10.07.2014: Still searching for an enternaining Argentina game.

Would be horribly bad if they'd win it really. How the Messi Praise will be, please don't let this happen!

Brazil made them look good.

No doubt. It's hard to gauge their performance given that Brazil simply fell apart. Weakened side, poor start, then everything just went straight to hell for them. Reminded me of our demolition of Arsenal a couple of years ago. We didn't put a foot wrong, as such - but at the same time we weren't exceptionally good either, we just happened to take advantage of a team that were a horrible shambles on the day.

I know that louis van gaal was a choker since his Barca time. Can't believe that strong Barca team with Figo, Rivaldo, Kluivert, Luis Enrique etc didn't even make a CL final, kept choking season after season. Seriously hyped up here in CAF.

What's your problem?

You must visit some pretty good forums then. Care to share? It's not even the worst post in that page.
How anyone can say that it's a "travesty" if a team do not win a match before the game is even played just baffles me and shows a complete lack of respect for Argentina who have earned the right to be in the final just as much as the Germans have.

Gratz Argentina. Best team won. We were awful and didn't deserve a victory here. LvG for once made the wrong changes and it cost us. He should have changed it so we would line-up in 4-3-3 at the end of the match.

Neverthleless we've had a great tournament. Tonight we weren't up for it.

I don't agree with his comment at all, but that was some damn big hyperbole on your part. It was all I meant.

Totally agreed... All the media are overpraising Messi and if Germany doesnt win he ll remain in history as a second Maradona when in reality, he s been meh.

Speakers praise Messi whatever happens in the game, Perez did a good solo then Messi received the ball and lost it and the speaker said Messi attempted his magic... Unbelievable.

I don't agree. I think he looked pale. It's not all down to him being marked out of the game.

Like they did against Iran, Nigeria, Bosnia, Swiss and Belgium right?

Vlar's penalty was a reflection of Holland's attitude for most of the game; nervous, cautious, safety first and hope for something to happen.

Playing at a high level and playing all those games has probably caught up with him. Ronaldo and Ronaldinho are probably the only players that come close to Messi when comparing club level performances and both those players broke down quickly as well. Similarly all three of those players games were all based on quickness and agility.

This is a strong contender for the worst post I've ever read on a football forum.

The sense of entitlement would be even more astonishing but for the fact this is a Man Utd forum.
He's right. Germany are the best side in the World. They are a team with strength in every department (Apart from when Per players, defence is shaky)

If they lose like 1-0 or on penalties or something it would be a travesty. If Argentina beat them convincingly then fair play but they won't.
