Day 23: Netherlands vs. Argentina

It's not about stars. It's about having a great system.
Well, thats great then, lets not bother with playing a football match and go straight to a penalty shootout. I feel like Ive been robbed of some entertainment tonight. I felt like this after the last WC. Ok, this one has been marginally better, albeit in the group stages. If having a great system involves playing for a pen shootout from kick off , then count me out thanks. An abomination of a football match. All those great players on show we we get served that.

By diving against Mexico. They played well against Spain but have been, as you said, pretty crap the rest of the time.

And Argentina have been much better right? They are also very fortunate to be in the final despite having a very good squad.

Will Germany do what they did to Brazil to Argentina. They spanked them 4-1 last time with Messi and Tevez in the team.

Speculative.

Some players dont want to take penalties. When a player steps forward, you have to trust your players in that situation, if Vlaar stepped forward to take one, he takes one, simple, doesn't matter when. The stupid thing was him putting himself forward.

He didn't have to put him first though.

Germany so far has been the best Team, i hope they win it, i can't stand Argentina

Remember that time I said Romero hs been good this tournament and I was ridiculed? Maybe man of the match today.

Yeah, I've panned him quite a bit in the past but it's true, he's had a great tournament and today came up huge. Shocked, really

I'd go with Mascherano as MOTM. Leo, on the verge with a place in the World Cup Final

What the hell are you talking about? I don't care which team went through. Just a bad night of piss poor football. Stayed up till 5 for this garbage
 Sorry. I misinterpreted the first post and then it was easy to do the same with the clarification.

Looking at the replay just then Romero looks like Aguero's older brother.

I agree about the volunteer part, but can a player also insist on going first?

I think LVG took a risk and it didn't pay off. He's still done a fantastic job to get this Dutch side so close to the WC final.

This'll be unpopular but this is Van Gaal's problem. The guy over-complicates in order to prove a point of his tactical mastery and in the process makes strange calls.

Vlaar for the first penalty was pure idiocy. Not a regular taker, wasn't confident, obviously missed it. The pressure on the other players to come was then fever pitch and it cost them dearly.

Sabella got it bang on. You start with Messi and you put Rodriguez (weakest) in at four. Easy tactics, easy win.

I think Van Gaal tried to win it in extra time with his substitutions. Didn't put Krul on and took Van Persie off. Vlaar was obviosuly feeling confident as he was having such a cracking game so Van Gaal took a chance by putting him up first. Not complicating anything, just didn't work out.

All the ABUs have been waiting for this. He got an extremely limited Dutch team to the brink of a final. He's shown he's a top class manager throughout.

Both teams played way too cagey game and were lacking ideas. I was thinking whoever was going to reach final will have to do something special vs Germany because it will be hard to contain them.

I see people wish Germany will destroy Argentina.

But it probably wont happen. Maybe Germany will win it, they probably will but whoever thinks they will destroy them is having a laugh. Argentina hasnt been impressive but defensively they've been very good and if they go all the way they wont care one bit about how they played.

I think the vast majority of people watching the final will be hoping Germany absolutely smash Argentina, for the sake of football at least.

If Germany don't win this now playing a tired and incredibly average Argentina they will never forget it.

I don't see that Germany can beat Argentina easily especially if Di Maria is fit to play. Enzo Perez was very good today, intelligent , skillful on the ball and hardworking.

Boring. The worst game of the knock outs besides Greece v Costa Rica. Neither side did much to chase the game. Virtually any time they had the chance they stopped, turned in field and let the other team regroup. It was, in many ways, a frightened performance from two teams trying not to lose instead of trying to win.

Yep. They've been desperate to jump onto any signs of weakness or a mistake.

Since when was it a joint decision? I appreciate players volunteer but the manager should set the order, surely?

I don't think that's how it works personally but I can't prove otherwise. Ronaldo going fifth for example was definitely a mutual decision, I reckon.

Messi been average at best all competition, played against shite teams but now that they're in the final he's one step closer to that Maradona status and completely undeserved at that.

Germany to win 4-0.

Another problem was... as soon as Krul has been established as your penalty stopper, he needs to be on the pitch for penalties.

1. He'll have more confidence stopping penalties than Clissen
2. He'll be under less pressure than Clissen
3. It'll make the Argentina players a little more nervous knowing they're up against a "specialist" - the fact that Clissen was in goal possibly helped them mentally.

I realise it's easier said then done, but once he's done it once... he's got to keep going... and he probably should have planned accordingly.

Very fortunate in a way, they really didn't fluke against a team playing better than them or so. Just the nature of World Cups these days in my opinion, very few balanced teams on which their top players aren't half-knackered, part-time crap managers, etc. This isn't the highest level of football in the world, no way. A massive and entertaining football party, due to it's scarcity and cosmopolitanism, but the real deal is the CL I'd say.
