Day 23: Netherlands vs. Argentina

I have to miss this game when it's on live... so I'm going to have to do that record & watch on delay without finding out the score thing.

Could be tricky.

I had to do the same for England's thrilling 0-0 draw against Costa Rica, and during that time I had a GP appointment in a place with quite a few TVs. In the end it was fine.

Thats the main downfall I find when doing this sort of thing... when the game ends up being a crap goalless draw or just a complete snoozefest... makes the whole thing seem not worth it/completely pointless.

Can't imagine this game will go that way mind - the stakes alone are high enough to get me invested.

I've been nervous for this game for 2 days now. Won't matter how good a game it is to me, I'll go out of my mind either way!

I can see de Jong getting sent off and piss away any chance we had.
No offense but i've seen you spouting alot of crap regarding Holland on here. I'm starting to doubt if you're actually Dutch or some Asian fan who has adopted Holland as his world cup team. De Jong is nothing short of a hero in Holland. He has been immense in this world cup and a vital cog in Van Gaals system.

De Jong has had only one red card during his career. Against Rapid Bucharest in 2006 at HSV. He is many things but certainly not a red card machine as the likes of Ramos and Pepe.

he is not a saint, either
what de jong did in last wc final was criminal and deserved to get redcarded
only webb could think that deserved only a yellow card

Messi is better than Robben, so I see Argies winning it. That's all I'm basing it on seeing as it will all be about these 2 players.

Absolutely, but that was 4 years ago (wow times goes fast). He can be dirty and he likes to tackle hard but going as far as calling him a liability is exaggerated in my point of view.

That may be so, but it is only one game. I can see Messi stepping up and Robben bottling it, but also vice versa. Or it could be a real clash of the titans like Zlatan vs. Ronaldo in that WC qualifier.

Quite a few Argentine players came to the party v Belgium - I think they finally got the message that Messi can make the difference, he can't do it all by himself.

Whoa tiger. I think you have me confused with somebody else, because - as a very patriotic Dutch person - I am pretty positive I have not said a single bad thing about Holland prior to the de Jong comment.

Don't like the guy. Think he's a loose cannon.

lol, what made you visualize me as an Asian guy? That is so random.

He's not a hero in Holland. Sure, we need a little toughness in the team (sweet memories of Stam), but de Jong can be such a sneaky bastard. But hey, if you love him, then peace!

hearing reports that RVP is injured, how bad is it ?

Well, he missed trainiing today due to sickness, stomach and colon issues. Janmaat has the same. But I did see some footage of Van Persie training by himself yesterday and limping like an old man, he certainly doesn't seem fit.

Neither of them will bottle it, but it won't be just about those two. It'll Messi more so for Argentina, but Robben should be having a field day against a very weak Argentina back line. Rojo looks decent going forwards, but very average defensively.

SSN say van Persie is a doubt, a blow for Holland if he is, but more balanced with Di Maria out for Argentina, so looks like both sides will be missing their second best players. Aguero may come back in but he's no way near 100% match fit.

Man this is not good. RVP seemed to be a bit tired the last two matches and now he has stomach problems too.

If RVP isn't in good shape I don't think we have much off a chance tomorrow. Damn this is not fun.

If he plays like he did agains t Costa Rica it is a blessing.

I think they'll play him even if he's 70%.

O ye of little faith.

Have you forgotten..... The Hunter?

thats like saying that sabella's plan is to score five goals

it is not a plan, is a wish, that may come true

Actually no, Louis van Gaal said his team's defensive tactics will be slightly adapted in response to Messi's game.

Furthermore, they will probably look to start defensively since he feels once ahead Argentina are going to be difficult to catch up with. Had he not touched upon their ability to close a game out he would probably start more attacking.

if holland succeed on that, they will win the game, i cant see another argie performing as needed to bit the dutchs

marcosdeto, you make it sound like Argentina is the underdog. That's our strategy. Don't jinx it!

Nor do I.

Also, Louis van Gaal will go into the game with plans, b plans and c plans etc. He will have tactics for different scenarios pre-planned and his strategy will be well thought out.

The Argentina coach is not on his level tactically, they are probably reliant on either the dutch management getting their tactics seriously wrong or Messi having a game so good no amount of preparation could possibly stop him and Robben having an off day.

De Jong is the opposite of a loose cannon, he's a tough but very controlled player, unlike a Pepe for example who is want to lose his head. I thought he was the second most important player for Holland after Robben.

I doubt van Persie will miss the game but if he does then it's at least a position we have a lot of quality backup at.

I suspect the game will be a dour affair, like all of Argentina's games thus far, and many of Hollands. Hard to call a winner here. On one hand Robben has been better then Messi this tournament and it could come down to these two individuals, but I feel like Argentina's defense has been more steady then Holland's (neither has been great).

Hoping Holland can win it and then kick the Germans, literally and figuratively out in the finals.

Come on Argies .Get through and bring those Germans down to earth.

Praying Netherlands thrash these lot, and beat Germany in the final.

Seen a few Dutch fans saying they wouldn't mind going out tomorrow as they fear Germany in the final. Certainly would be hard for them to take.

The Netherlands have played the more exciting football than Argentina, but I feel it will be the Argies setting the pace and hogging the ball. They've been methodical on offense and fairly suffocating on defense.

However the Netherlands played their best game against a team in Spain that hogs the ball much more than the Argies.

Hopefully they sit back and absorb the pressure in a 352 then cut Argentina apart on the break.

Viva van Gaal!!
