Day 23: Netherlands vs. Argentina

Ah I see the Van Gaal is now shit trend has already started

This'll be unpopular but this is Van Gaal's problem. The guy over-complicates in order to prove a point of his tactical mastery and in the process makes strange calls.

Vlaar for the first penalty was pure idiocy. Not a regular taker, wasn't confident, obviously missed it. The pressure on the other players to come was then fever pitch and it cost them dearly.

Sabella got it bang on. You start with Messi and you put Rodriguez (weakest) in at four. Easy tactics, easy win.

You could see the logic, but it was daft, agreed.

dutch were the better side
They were still fecking awful. Sneijder was a joke. Everyone but the defence was awful. Kuyt was an abomination.
Argentina were very cagey, but I can't say as many of their players were as shit as Hollands were.
Van Gaals luck ran out. I guess it was miracle he got them this far.

Much as I dislike the Argies they deserved the win.

A massive achievement this WC for what is, on paper, a mediocre Dutch side.

The Argies weren't much better. A Villa defender had Messi in his back pocket for 120 minutes.

Nearly all teams have been poor besides Germany

The only other big fish that wasn't was France really.
Germany are now half expected to thrash Argentina on Sunday, especially after the way Argentina have played. A victim of their success.

Argentina will win the final 3-1.

Germany was half expected to trash Brazil too.

There were good reasons to bring Huntelaar on, especially as RVP was unfit before the game.

The bad decision was sending Vlaar up first for the pens.
I wanted him on for Sneijder, who was utterly hopeless and whose penalty record isn't great

There will never be that many goals when Argentina play.

Everyone wanted brazil dead, and they died.

Why everyone wants now argentenia dead, explain me

A nervy ending with a deserve penalty shoot-out to decide the winner.

When was the last time a United player played in a World Cup final?

Speculative.

Some players dont want to take penalties. When a player steps forward, you have to trust your players in that situation, if Vlaar stepped forward to take one, he takes one, simple, doesn't matter when. The stupid thing was him putting himself forward.

How are they suppose to do that? They cant score more then 1 goal per match.

Holland are pretty crap to be honest. Well organised, average players doing well and then Robben got them to the semies.

Yeah, true, but they still had their moments. I don't think I've seen a match with Argentina this World cup that has actually been entertaining. Either way, they're in the final.

Isn't Vlaar the backup PK taker for Villa? It's a joint decision between the players and management when deciding the order of the takers anyway.

Because he's better than the other options.

But he obviously wasn't fully/match-fit... in a game where you know Extra Time is a possibility, seems a bit short-sighted to start one player you know won't last the 90... let alone 2.

On what grounds did they deserve it? Got the pens right but their open play was bang average, as they have been in nearly all their games so far. Really hope they don't win on the back of these performances.

Vlaar of all people to take the first penalty; Gambles, sometimes goes your way, sometimes doesn't:cool:

By diving against Mexico. They played well against Spain but have been, as you said, pretty crap the rest of the time.

Germany better win the final, Argentina are bloody average.

Then you lose the only argument you had, which was the game against Spain. Argentina and Netherlands were about as even today as can be. 10 minutes from Netherlands in the 2nd half, Argentina slightly more dangerous in ET and that's about it.
What the hell are you talking about? I don't care which team went through. Just a bad night of piss poor football. Stayed up till 5 for this garbage

Is that Messi I see jumping up and down and showing some emotion?

How does one make the finals without playing one good game?

Messi as great as he is, I still think maradona was better, just as he had a bigger aura about him than messi to go along with the talent, he also turned it on in big games. Back today's performance, Messi does not look 100% fit a bit slower than his usual self, maybe the reason behind his subdued performance.

Ha ha, how long have you be waiting around to hurl the 'Van Gaal is shit' stuff?

You'll still get people saying because he's quiet for large periods that he doesn't compare to Maradona etc etc.
He still has to go to Napoli.

Messi can be the greatest ever now if they manage to win.
I fail to see how winning one match, no matter how big it is will make him the best ever. For me he is already in the top three ever no matter what happens and he got there from his consistency and great performances from 2008-2011. How would a defender slipping tomorrow and costing argentina the win make him any worse than if they went on to win? The world cup is a team trophy not an individual one, so I think it is unfair on messi for people to say he has to win the world cup.

I think Argentina - with Mascherano - have a better chance of stopping Germany than Holland did.

Still think Germany will beat them though... I'll go 2-0.
