Day 23: Netherlands vs. Argentina

Terrible match, Argentina have been far from impressive while Germany have had some exceptional performances. Most of that Germany squad have experienced losing a final or semi-final, there seems to be a big desire to finally go all the way and win a tournament.

Incredible that Argentina are in the final with the way they've played. Lucky to even beat Iran.

Though the Netherlands haven't been great either, this was a very limp performance.

They'd have been no less deserving than Holland.

Yes they are. Holland at least tried and actually have played well in the Tournament. Argentina have been playing the style of freaking Norway. I really hope Germany slaughters them 8 - 1.

How anyone can watch that game and accuse one of the teams of ruining the game/being anti-football is beyond me.

Both teams were crap, neither deserved to win.
Yeah.. neither ventured with more than 4 players fully forward and hence the tumescent display we saw

Argentina have to be one of the worst teams ever to get to a WC final. Some great players, but they have been shocking as a team and a spectacle. Spoiled every game they've played. I hope Germany drill them in the final, but sadly, I expect more of the same. In fact, I might not even bother watching it.

It's not about stars. It's about having a great system.

This'll be unpopular but this is Van Gaal's problem. The guy over-complicates in order to prove a point of his tactical mastery and in the process makes strange calls.

Vlaar for the first penalty was pure idiocy. Not a regular taker, wasn't confident, obviously missed it. The pressure on the other players to come was then fever pitch and it cost them dearly.

Sabella got it bang on. You start with Messi and you put Rodriguez (weakest) in at four. Easy tactics, easy win.

The dutch played way better. feckING DISAPPOINTED! WHY DID VLAAR GO FIRST? WHAT THE feck WAS HE THINKING?

I thought LVG's worst decision was starting De Jong... he knew he'd only get 60 minutes out of him at best, so why start him?

Robben was better than Messi who has seen his best times... he will be a midfielder soon...

You'll still get people saying because he's quiet for large periods that he doesn't compare to Maradona etc etc.
He has been good this WC and has a chance to play well in the final i do hope he does it.

Not the best of choices letting Vlaar take the first penalty, Huntelaar may have been a better option if they didn't want to mess their order up too much although mixing it up makes it a bit more unpredictable. People will say maybe Krul should've come on again but they'd used two subs up rather early and RVP looked like he'd had it. Unlucky Holland, look forward to seeing van Gaal at United for the new season now. Come on Germany, hope you beat the Argies in the final.

Germany are now half expected to thrash Argentina on Sunday, especially after the way Argentina have played. A victim of their success.

Argentina will win the final 3-1.

Vlaar as first penalty taker was just mind blowing.

Shocking decision from LVG he won't be known as a genius now.

The daft thing is - he/they did it perfectly against Costa Rica... totally bizarre how he changed his strategy for this game... against a better side.

I am talking about this match
Then you lose the only argument you had, which was the game against Spain. Argentina and Netherlands were about as even today as can be. 10 minutes from Netherlands in the 2nd half, Argentina slightly more dangerous in ET and that's about it.

Messi certainly didn't take his chance to become one of the greatest ever. Maradona's Argentina performance is just way above anything Messi has done in this World Cup, which has arguably been his best. He is 27 already so I doubt he will be able to ever have a better World Cup than this which is a huge set-back for him in terms of being compared to the greatest ever.

Great to see the negative Dutch go out. Argentina will have to play much better in the final. Messi will get his chance to win it.

You gotta feel bad for the dutch. Argentina play some of the worst football I've ever seen

I loved watching them play with Pekerman in 2006, but now they play like they've had consultation from Mourinho and Allardyce. Hope Germany wipe the floor with them.... but we all know it will most likely be a dull 0-0, largely forgettable final. What a shame the way it's all panned out - still been a great WC overall however

There's more than one way to play football. Argentina have played well.
