Day 23: Netherlands vs. Argentina

I think Messi will have to change and adapt his game. Clearly not been his great self since the injury.

I love how everyone is saying that but I've yet to hear how many penalties he has faced.

He has something like 70 games in his career, half for Ajax, who probably don't give away many....
I read something like 16 (probably not all on senior level).

16 I think they said earlier.

He got a very average team to the quarters almost single handedly

He looks nowhere near fully fit. I've said it a few times, he hasn't looked fully fit for nearly the past 18 months

Barcelona and Argentina rely on him far too much and he plays far too many games. He is being ruined.
Story of this world cup tbh, apart from Germany. That is also in part what made it so exciting and unpredictable early on. Apart from Germany I don't think any of these teams will be memorable.

I deleted the previous post.

This is the second time Argentina and The Netherlands have gone to ET - 1978 Argentina won 3-1 after finishing 1-1 at 90mins.

Which Maradona had as well. Ronaldo has been amazing on this regard.

Yep, question is, can Messi come back from his off-year and return to his record breaking best? Does he have it in him anymore to have a tournament like Maradona in '86? I fear not.

So basically both these teams strategy is to win the cup by kicks, or the odd luck. If they play this tight against each other, God help us when the opponent is Germany.

I agree that Argentina have been a bit average in most games but the teams they've been facing were even worse. They haven't exactly had the thoughest route to the semis and aside of the spectacular scenes here and there Messi has hardly been a constant threat in these matches. He did pop up in important situations though. But I heavily disagree with anyone who'd put him amongst the WC's top performers. Especially if you go by his standards his performances haven't been that great.
