fecking epic game.

Anyone playing it at the moment? I'm a bit of a noob but just won my first victory on noble via space race!

yeah its the daddy of a game, i play it with my housemate, lasts for days but it really is a complete game!

Indians are the best, spamming workers and chopping down trees!

I couldn't get into it, for some reason. I played Civ 2 and Civ 3 to death, barely a day would go by without me going on it for at least a few minutes, but Civ 4 didn't grab me. I think it was partly the religions mechanic; I hated it. Didn't think the game needed it.

Been playing the new version of Colonization a bit, that uses the Civ 4 engine.

Good old fashioned fun :)

What didn't you like about religion in the game? Civ 4 is the only Civ I've played so I can't compare to previous installments.

I'm not a massive fan of combat in the game, I mean I like how it works for the most part.. but when a maceman can beat a marine squad just because of fortification bonuses it's a bit retarded.

Yeah, if anything needs to be improved its the combat, its a bit basic tbf, but the game isnt really about combat, its about wheedling out of it and emerging victorious anyway.

The amount of retarded fights ive had tho where they guy just wont die

Do you actually build in Civilization? Like say, Age of Empires?

I love Civilization, i remember playing the first one on a 486 PC via DOS

I haven't really got into the new one yet for time issues more than anything, but i see it has a mac version so i'll grab that sometime this week.

Epic game though.

Civ II > Civ III > Civ IV in my opinion.

Europa Universalis III with all the expansions is better than of all of them although it's a bit different since it's based on a real world map.

I've played Civ 4 alot a couple of years ago. It takes some time to get into but it's a great game. Haven't played the older versions though, so I can't compare.

Damn right. Just a downward trend too much pretty graphics not enough gameplay.

I much prefer Galactic Civilsations 2 (which is essentially Civ3 in space with prettier graphics comparitively).

The AI always dominate me though.

Yeah, Galactic Civilizations 2 > *

I loved Civ 3 though, spent so many hours on that. Civ 4 doesn't really expand on it in any drastic way though, got bored of it quickly.

Looking to get a game to ease me into this genre. Preferably an older one that isnt too big download wise. Anyone any ideas?

I'd just get Civ 4, although some of the guys here seem to prefer 3 and 2 I've only played 4 and found it fairly easy to get into, it was the first turn based strategy I'd played as well.

Thinking of Civ, I never gave Alpha Centauri a chance, really. I might try and download that and give it another shot.

Civ 4 is plenty of fun multiplayer.

EU3 is amazing as well one of my favorite games. Absolutely love trouncing Ming as the Japanese right off the bat and then conquering the world ;p

Civilization: Call to Power was the best IMO. Although 3 and 2 were pretty good too.

I love Civilization 4. I loved Civilization 3 as well. I also quite liked Civilization. Most of all, love Alpha Centauri. I'm not particularly good at any of them, though. I will never be able to go above a certain difficulty level, just because I don't want to micromanage everything. I put workers on auto, for example. Still, it's great fun.

Call to Power was actually a totally separate game made by other people. Hence Call to Power 2 didn't have the "Civilization" in the title - they weren't allowed to use it.

Yea just realised that. Still, I enjoyed Call to Power over the rest of them. Might re-install it actually.

Great game but I rarely finish it. Love building up my cities and empire, hate having to go to war as it's tedious as feck. Once you reach the point where you can't expand your empire any more without invading someone I usually quit!

Same with the anno games as well- the anno 1404 is mint by the way.
