Channel 4's 3D Week

I was sure there was already a thread on this but I cant find it so here is another ...

Anyway I have been waiting for the past week with my 3D glasses in anticipation of the great event that would be 3D TV Week

So is it just me or is this the biggest pile of shit ever?

I guess I have only myself to blame!
I know there have been many false dawns with 3D but I seriously thought this was going to be some kind of new and improved technology - how wrong was I :(
 
No idea why you had any good expectations whatsoever.
 
I still have my 3D glasses from when I went to see UP in the cinema, but PS3/tv shows on my laptop > normal tv so I doubt I'll be asked to check this "new technology" out.
 
I popped down to Sainsbury's today, which were meant to be giving out the free glasses so you could watch. They didn't have any. So I didn't watch

Well done channel 4. Doesn't sound like I've missed out on anything
 
yeah it was a bit of a dissapointment, the only bit which seemed to work well was when that american guy did the card trick with the 5 picture cards on the screen, which came towards you. It was pretty obvious how that trick was done though.
 
Without experiments such as this, then you're not going to see much movement forward. You do realise that there isn't much chance of 3D without glasses unless they can find a way of producing the images at a very silly frame rate. The trouble is you see, until holographic projection comes along, a TV screen is a two dimensional object. 3D is all about tricking the brain into seeing something in a particular way.

Which is one of the main problems. I have absolutely zero interest in sitting in front of my TV with cheap plastic glasses on. TV isn't an event like cinema can be.

I saw Up last month at the cinema, and have to say the 3D added absolutely nothing to the experience. Which is down to the other problem, there's no point making a 3D feature that's not designed specifically for 3D. Rather than add depth to the image (which is, or at least should be, the whole idea behind 3D), they're currently simply having the image "pop" out of the screen a little. I'm not excited by the fact the rock on the left of the screen is a little closer to me than the rock on the right. Avatar will hopefully buck the trend, but right now everything is being altered for 3D to squeeze a few extra quid out of the punters.

I'm all for experiments, but up to this point it's all been a rubbish gimmick. I have no objection paying more for something better, but so far it's all been paying more for something slightly different and the opportunity to wear cheap plastic glasses.
 
I dont even have a problem with the glasses but even with them the effect is poor - doesnt seem to have been much progress

Have seen some good 3D stuff at IMAX recently but they havent managed to get anywhere near that on TV as yet

It doesn't work with cheap plastic glasses anymore. They can do it.
