Carrick's First Team

If he can prove that he has instructed Bruno to take better care of the ball and not make unnecessary route one passes Im all for giving him the job till the end of the season. Bruno came on and did more in 5 minutes than VDB did all game.

In the post match shots after the final whistle Donny seemed in better spirits. Ole’s tenure must have been a nightmare for him

Chelsea now all set up to be an extremely curious affair.

Wonder what we do if Carrick actually proves himself tactically competent and gets his teams and in-game management spot on there and Arsenal.

Certainly would be a conundrum in terms of interim management.

Surprising he picked the team and the tactics similiar to how Ole won against the big teams last season.. play deep , do not press high and hit them on the counter ..

Really ? We had just had a similar experience with Ole in his first 3 months. Do we ever learn ?

Funny thing is he might one day prove himself to be a good manager. But, i don't think our fanbase can ever be trusted with having an ex player in charge. That's not a chapter we should ever revisit.

External appointments only.

Well, if he wins the next two (assuming we don't find a permanent manager in the next two weeks), Carrick may well be considered to stay on as interim. But as you've pointed out, our board will probably do something stupid.

Obviously we should still look but if he can get results I have no issues with him till end of season if our targets are summer only

We were lucky tonight. Villareal had plenty of chances and it could have gone against us.

We still need a proper manager. Have we not learned our lesson?

Nothing, if he is competent we let the new manager decide if he wants to keep him as a coach and rely on him. If anything it could be an opportunity for us to develop a "Flick".

I don’t want Carrick to stay even until the end of the season, but we weren’t lucky.

Carrick only got one wrong - Martial.

I wouldn't say it was wrong. Maybe Lingard instead at best. I think he played his part in lulling them into a false sense of security and softening them up. When rashford came on they didn't know what hit them.

It was a great win, but we were under pressure for 70 minutes. The keeper made 3 good saves.
We were poor but we weren’t under serious pressure, and most of the saves I’d be distraught if they went in. They had pop shots from outside the box and were often left as frustrated as we usually are.

I think he'd have to win 5 or 6 in a row to even be in a conversation as the sample size is so small on which to base an appointment. There's absolutely no way it should reach that many games without the board sorting it out. Really an appointment should be made in the next week or so.

I hope not. Even if Carrick wins the next 5 games on the trot, we need an experienced manager at the helm. We should have learnt our lesson
The one thing this board has been consistent at in the last 8 years is demonstrating that they don't learn from their mistakes.

Nightmare, the BTsport presenter is already already asking the question. A few more wins, and TalkSPORT will be having phone-ins arguing that he should be given the job.

One world class save from Dave plus 2 good ones that still should've been saved. It's less than we put up offensively so I don't take it as a lucky win. They played better quality football in the first half - yes.

The second half we were much the better team and made the look like second dovision team. The look beaten after 60 minutes and it was still 0-0.

But, if you assess Ole on that interim period, he'd be one of the best managers of all time!

Of course, I'm not saying we go completely down that rabbit hole, but proper, tactical management that garners results over a run of games that, let's be honest, most, including myself, expect us to be hammered during, would surely be some food for thought if Carrick got through those games with plaudits?

We looked tactically astute and had a plan for the first time this season - if we have that against the league leaders, I think it will be a pretty big deal in its own right.

You're not a little bit intrigued? Wasn't expecting any of that from Carrick.

Yeah, I'm not campaigning for Carrick, but it does make me wonder.

Well that's silly. You'll say no to Guardiola?

You're overrating today's performance. We were shit till the last 30 minutes, and De Gea saved us multiple times. We only played well in the last 30 minutes.

Good subs from Carrick to solve the mess that was happening in the first 60 minutes but to say this was "tactically astute" is really stretching it. You're getting carried away, mate.

The starting 11 was very good, and the 5 subs in Europe is that you can change things up alot, this I think is why Ole missed a trick in the Final last season. When Shaw was on his last legs as was Bruno. Maybe bringing them off the bench . Today the bench changed the game.

We were tight and disciplined, kept our shape, modified tactics on the go - coming from headless chicken football, it was a huge upgrade. I'd call that astute, especially so when it looked a clear plan to utilise the squad deeper into the game.

We grew into the game as should be expected of a team who become conditioned to being beaten from pillar to post against any opposition.

Not a masterclass, but this was an extremely high pressure game in a high pressure environment and we acquitted ourselves better than most would have dreamed of prior to kick off.

I don't know. I honestly found the game unwatchable up till Bruno came on. Everyone were slaughtering the team in the matchday thread as well prior to that. IMO, the subs changed the game but before that it was just the normal affairs for United. He did well to change the team's shape at this point (as Ole would have waited till the 80th minute to make his first sub as usual), but I don't think today's game is the way to go forward for United by any means.

He did fine as a caretaker, but I hope it doesn't go beyond that.

Villareal are a literal bogey team for us - our games with them have always drab, stoic affairs and we were in keeping with that for the first hour, but we clearly intended to turn the game on its head in the second (the subs were intentional) and executed that superbly.

No matter what, I think it's highly unrealistic to expect a group of players who are, by now, conditioned to bad football, mistakes, and ultimately, getting hammered to turn around and play coherent, fluid football from the off. We grew into the game, even in terms of expression as Carrick's implementations took hold, and this is Emery we're talking about, so no slouch. Contextually, it's a huge result and performance, which is why I can't help but wonder what happens if it wasn't a fluke and Carrick actually has an executable set of plans for both Chelsea and Arsenal?

I'm not saying I was expecting a free fluid football. I'm just saying this performance was nothing exceptional to make us think of giving him the job till the end of the season, and if we win against Chelsea, we shouldn't either. This club needs to start taking decisions based on proper planning and not on knee jerking in my opinion, because this has been our problem post Ferguson.
