Brighton Game Postponed

Damn...
My 8 year old has covid (no symptoms thanks god) so we are isolating. We were really looking forward to this one and also the Brentford game :(

Hope all goes well for you and your family!

Looking around the world, I don’t think any government handles it well without significant drawbacks. This virus is just simply too powerful in many aspect that we are just not able to deal with systematically in global scale. Since the beginning, we are playing catch-up.

Depends on how you define 'well'. We've done alright here in NZ and it's amazing what a decisive and strong government can do. The UK, however, has handled it anything but 'well' and it's undeniable that it could (and should) have done an awful lot better.

Damn that's frustrating. The lunchtime kick offs are an absolute blessing for fans based in Asia and it'll get rearranged as an evening match that I can't watch live:(

with the power of social media nowadays you could generate enough attention to get something out of this unfortunate situation. i would go down the lines of creating a narrative about your unfortunate circumstances. something like :

“i’m a sexual inadequate and on a registered offenders list. this was my one chance to come to the uk and watch the mighty manchester reds play before my incarceration. i have sunk every last cent into this trip. i’ve even neglected some of the cages i keep immigrant children in to ensure i had the funds for this pilgrimage. trump willing, i will be able to get back to the holy land and watch manchester win a football game.”

you’ll get a go fund me in no time.

Hahah that gave me a good chuckle.

Thanks for the kind messages everyone, the club refunded me the money almost instantly, should see it in my account sometime next week.

Heartbreaking really. Flew all the way here for it, but at least they gave us notice well in advance. Does anyone here know if I can get a refund? The email I got just says my ticket will remain valid but that doesn’t do much for me tbh and my tickets were pretty expensive
I reckon give m them a call

I was thinking to myself Utd have been very lucky not to be that affected by COVID, looks like I definitely spoke far too soon on this one. This is now having the same feeling of when Villa had to close their training ground last season.

Brighton will be delighted it's off, numerous injuries and 11 games without a win.

United will have serious fixture congestion in the New Year.

Got to admit, I am glad this is of as we are decimated at the moment with Covid and other injuries and could do with a bit of a break to reset.

We recently moved back to the UK after a few years in Phnom Penh and the only two advantages that I have experienced in coming home are, UK supermarkets and football on at proper times!

I am just wondering why the numbers within the PL shot up like crazy within a few weeks. Is Omicron so dominant in the UK?

I’ve just looked at the fixtures due to be played in England tomorrow, from the Premier League to League Two, there are 40 games scheduled and already 18 are postponed.
Granted they might not all be covid related, could be pitch problems in the lower leagues I suppose, but still, it’s looking desperate.

There is a university in the U.S., Cornell U., that has a 97% vaccination rate and yet they are experiencing a huge outbreak. Vaccines can help you recover but they DO NOT prevent you from getting infected. This is not a pandemic of the un-vaccinated.

The league is in a pickle. If they cancel the matches until January then the league is extended into the summer. If the league is extend in the summer how does the PL start early in order to take a month-long break for the WC in December? Tough decisions ahead.

Relegate 6 teams this season. Less fixtures next season. Mass promotion the following season to restore the league to proper numbers

If you can field a team from first team and youth players they should just get on with it. Every fixture you play is one less headache later down the road.

If you postpone things for a couple of weeks cases are still going to be rising in the general population and players will still be returning positive cases unless they live at training grounds. Klopp is right when he said the situation will be no different after a small break.

Well, respiratory virus season's end is at least 20 weeks away so I guess we will play in the summer.. You might as well accept that everyone will come down with this sooner or later and trust the vaccines. Do what you can to take care of your health. Walk, run, bike.. eat healthy and so on. The other things you think you can control are just a chimera.

Null and void this season please.
The season when the pandemic was at its worst in regards to deaths and fear did not see the season null void.

I really don’t think there is any reason to null and void it this year. 80000 daily infections which we need to stop spiralling out of control but since jumping from 37800 daily average to above 75000 daily average hospitalisations and deaths have remained the same. While things might change, I think that it is actually something to be very optimistic about.

This would be a good time to train the team in high press without having to worry about the next game. If they aren't all in covid isolation.

Hate to break it to you but that's kinda exactly why the game has been postponed.

Yeah but maybe they're all unvaccinated close contacts. They could all go form a covid bubble at Carrington :lol:

But seriously they're gonna shut the EPL down for a while most likely. Apart from anything else the revenue hit from playing behind closed doors will be unacceptable to the clubs. And there's no world cup in the summer so league can run on into July no probs. It will be a de facto mid winter break

And what about the next season and the next? We don’t know if this situation will be repeated the next seasons so IMO P.L has to deal with it as it is.

For the future, the world can only hope there is advancement in the vaccine, or finding a cure.

Talking about dealing with it as is, then they have to force the game to go ahead with players tested negative. Can't just keep postponing and rescheduling. Seems like they can't force teams to play with whatever available, this would mean the schedule of the season would be fecked. Saving this season only hindering the next as seen with the last season with team lack pre season.

Previously the solution is football behind closed door with no fans so the season could complete. It already impacted clubs negatively. Keep doing so as well as butchering UEFA competitions, clubs are gonna go under.

Unlike that season where UEFA compromised to have their competitions temporary butchered to complete. Even had the EURO moved to 2021! Keep butchering the CL, EL, so the national leagues can complete only weaken UEFA position, so this time with ESL still pushing in the background, UEFA don't want to lose the bargain chip with the wantaway clubs. UEFA competitions don't offer enough revenue while those clubs have been struggling as is, it push them few extra mile with the ESL ambition.

Null and void this season which hasn't reached the mid point. Take a break. Start and finish new league season within 2022 calendar year (more months to accommodate potential outbreak) especially with World Cup in the winter would be better solution for all parties.

Sounds to me that it would be more constructive to get all the players with the dreaded lurgy training together as there are considerably more of them!

I can see the vaccination becoming a contractual obligation for new recruits in the next transfer windows

You do realize there's a WC in the middle of next season? The next season is anyway due to start earlier than usual due to it, so this season can't be delayed much.

I don't think there's anyway the season gets paused for more than a week or so. I think they'll come up with stricter regulations regarding grounds for postponement, for instance, if you have a certain number of first and youth team players not in isolation, you must play.

It doesn't have to be dominant in the whole country. It only needs to be dominant in a few pockets of West London and Cheshire.

Footballers live in their own private world that's separate from the general lives of the average person. They don't go to the same shops or the same restaurants or the same entertainment venues or use the same public transport.

But what they do do congregate in the same small circles. United and City players, for example, have a Manchester-based Whatsapp group which they'll often use to socialise outside of work. And I believe there are also nationality-based Whatsapp groups with all the Brazilian players in the league (famously created by David Luiz for example) getting together all their compatriots from Everton to Newcastle to Chelsea.

With Omicron being as infectious as it is, you only need a tiny spark for the entire Premier League to catch it within a few days.

Plus most footballers are stupid to boot

I bet they lock the whole country down straight after Christmas, probably for a fortnight at least. It will be empty stadia or suspension, and I know what the clubs will prefer.

was only there for a few days but I found it depressing as hell

Very good point

when the positives came it had to be almost the entire team. lets look at Liverpool, only a few here and there but not enough to postpone games.

United players will be back next week and we are ready to roar and close the gap with chelsea.

i know for certain that ahead of the Brighton game we only had 7 recognised first trainers available and I believe 3 of those were goalkeepers.

the situation was a bit better before the Brentford game but not much better

completely disagree with this. I know where the Manchester based players eat/drink and they are very much public venues that I personally have met them in many times. I have also seen United players in shops in and around Manchester and have regularly encountered United and city players on specific dog walking routes. There is a specific pet shop where you will frequently see players from all the north west clubs on normal weekend days (especially in the summer when no matches at all being played) and many have very normal lifestyles in terms of going to the cinema etc (granted in non Covid times)

before the game vs young boys several senior players were eating in a restaurant just a short distance from the ground surrounded by United fans for example.

Difference is all our unvaccinated players have to isolate even if they aren’t positive.
